RNSA (P) Early Summer Series – Race 4 IRC

"I thought you did this for fun" said my wife as I stepped into the cold pouring rain already wearing full foulies to go sailing. It was therefore quite pleasing to be greeted by the biggest turn out of the Series so far as the stalwarts gathered off Gilkicker. With the rain easing, Electron V after a brief skirmish with Kurketrekker over who was duty SOOD set a course across the west going tide to Kemps Quay, N Sturbridge and home.

Compound re-org

Spring is well and truly here and we’ve been blessed with some fabulous weather already! The ‘summer only’ boats have / are returning for the new season. Please email me when you have returned your boat, thanks. It would be useful if you could tell me if you have NOT brought your dinghy back for this season yet. Email is best way please.

COMPOUND Re-Org Saturday 26th at 08:30 HOURS.

As Easter was late this year just about everything has slipped back – the compound re-org is a full 3 weeks later than last year. Plenty of time for all of this years stickers to be on the boats.
Please make sure your trolley is marked clearly with your surname to make identifying it as quick as possible on Saturday. So many boats are NOT named and this makes identifying boats that should not be in the compound extremely difficult. Obviously boats will have to be moved so it is important that the tyres are pumped up and the trolley is in good order – having looked around in the compound yesterday this is not the case at the moment! A reminder that road trolleys are not allowed to be tied to the fence. We usually have a large number of members helping on the compound on re-org day and it has been suggested that we ‘upgrade’ this event to include clear-up as well. So, if you intend to come along can you please bring along some gardening gloves and together we can shift boats, clear some weeds and generally clear up our compound and the surrounding areas.

The cruiser re-launch went very well with so many members helping each other; I would like to add my thanks to Ian’s to all the people who helped in any way at this weekend.

Thanks very much,
Linda Vacher

Saturday 26th April “Dinghy Members’ Meeting”

You’ll by now have seen Linda Vacher’s recent sequence of Tidal Diamonds regarding the forthcoming Compound Re-Organisation this Saturday. If I can just add my support to Linda’s request for boats to be easily identified, and readily able to be moved. We have a great number of willing volunteers and the easier it is to identify and manoeuvre the boats then the quicker we are all finished.

This brings me neatly onto the Dinghy Members’ Meeting. This will be held in the clubhouse after we have finished the compound clearance. Historically we take about an hour and a half to finish the moves and make some effort to cut back the undergrowth on the outside of the fence (willing gardeners always welcomed on the day). So without wishing to constrain myself to a start time I would imagine that once we’re done in the compound I can start the meeting at about 1030 in the clubhouse.

I don’t have a great deal to say but I will touch on the following subjects and of course it’s my role to take members’ views to the Sailing Committee. So please feel free to voice your thoughts in support or perhaps challenging the current dinghy sailing programme.

  • 2014-15 Calendar (why reductions in the programme were made)
  • Dinghy Cruises for the summer (I will need at least one willing Cruise Leader for the Round Hayling Cruise)
  • RYA Push the Boat Out (our LV See Pursuit Race)
  • Bart’s Bash (an update so far)

I’m happy to take any items beforehand via email (see below) so that we don’t have a massive AOB at the end. And for those looking to get away smartly I’d like to think we can have our discussions concluded within an hour.

Blokes Up North

Through the Heart of the Northwest Passage by Sail and Oar A book by Kev Oliver and Tony Lancashire In a post-exploration world, two relatively ordinary blokes, serving Royal Marines, decided they wanted an extraordinary 21st century adventure. In this refreshingly honest account they re-live the highs and lows of sailing and rowing a tiny open boat, completely unsupported, through one of the most iconic wilderness waterways on the planet—the Northwest Passage across the top of Canada.

RNSA (P) Early Summer Series – Race 3 IRC

Despite the rather chilly Easterly breeze it was another great evening for sailing and with Widgeon and Sunshine appearing the fleet numbers swelled. Sunshine struggling with crew numbers relinquished the SOOD responsibility to Tinker T and a course to Browndown, NE Ryde Middle, N Sturbridge and home provided a welcome variation of a tight spinnaker reach to test the crews.

VAT refunds and tender winter storage refunds

Dear TSC Membership

In the past 6 months I have issued refunds for payment of vat no longer applicable following our successful appeal and also for tender storage where some members were invoiced incorrectly.

The sums involved have been ~£3 for vat and ~£10 for tender storage and most members have kindly asked me to donate their refund to the club funds. I still have a few refunds where I have been unable to get a response from the person concerned and the Exec Committee have agreed that if the members don’t contact me by the end April 14 the refunds can be donated to the TSC Club funds. This note is therefore a final calling notice for anyone due a refund to contact me if you wish to receive it.

You are due a refund if:

  • you paid a compound storage fee in the period between May and Sep 2013 and were charged vat on this
  • you paid for 2013 / 2014 winter storage of your tender, but it was stored all winter underneath your cruiser

If you believe you are due a refund and would like to receive it, please drop me an email and I will check the records and process accordingly

thanks

Compound re-org

Compound re-org is imminent. I have looked around and as usual most of the ‘regular sailors’ have put this years plaques on their boats. Sadly that does leave a lot of other boats who, as yet, do not have a current sticker on. If tyres are left in one position they tend to go flat and generally degrade and I’m afraid this too has been the case with many of the trolley wheels. With all the winds and weather we have had this year a lot of the trolleys have lost their owners name labels, please ensure you put your name very clearly on the front of your trolley!

Please ensure your boat is not going to cause us problems during the compound re-org, check,

  • It has this years plaques on
  • It is easily movable
  • It is clearly named (with the correct owners surname!)
  • It is not full of water

We will also be clearing up the compound shortly and anything that is not named will be disposed of.
Please take any rubbish you generate home with you or simply pop it into the Household waste place – DO NOT LEAVE IT IN THE COMPOUND! It is simply not fair.

Thank you,

Linda Vacher
Compound Bosun

Need to dispose of your out of date Flares?

Hampshire Constabulary Marine Unit in conjunction with Ramora UK, one of the UK’s leading bomb disposal companies and the below marinas are offering “a distress flare amnesty” for private boat owners. The disposal of out-of-date flares is a growing problem for boat owners who face severe penalties if they fail to follow the correct procedures.

Out-of-date flares can be delivered to the following sites in Hampshire & the Isle of Wight.

Sat 26th April Northney Marina (MDL)
Sat 10th May Hamble Point Marina (MDL)
Sat 17th May Cowes Yacht Haven
Sun 10th Aug Lymington Yacht Haven
Sun 19th Oct Hamble Point Marina MDL (no separate event)

The service will be between 1000hrs & 1500hrs on the above dates and will be in conjunction with open days/boat shows already taking place at the venue.

Up to ten flares per private individual will be accepted free of charge however we will be asking for a charitable donation. Previous other events have charged £2 per flare. Disposal of quantities greater than ten will only be possible by prior agreement.

Over the year we hope to raise enough money to buy a sailing dinghy(ies) which we will then donate to a sailing club(s) for the use of young people who would not normally get the opportunity to experience the sport of sailing.

For further information please contact Hampshire Police Marine Unit via their email marine.

Cruiser Launch

Down now to the gritty stuff!

Please remove all your woods and rubbish by the compound reorganisation on the Saturday the 26th, any left after this date will be burnt (I’m not joking have already a brazier organised) it’s not fair on Bosuns to have to clear up after you and will cost the club if I have to get a skip in!!

Ladders not locked up will be under my lock and key shortly, we have 31 cruisers in the compound so security is an issue, you will need to contact myself if you want them released.

If parking in the compound please ensure you check the Log Book for boats launching during your stay, there is nothing worse than organising drivers, banksmen and crew to find your blocked in by a car!! Up until compound reorganisation there is space behind the cruisers, Easter weekend this is the best place to park.

Ensure you mark all you gear that is staying in the compound, stickers and your name should be clearly displayed, if we can’t identify an owner it will again be disposed off.

Lock the compound gates, just because there are cars around doesn’t mean there are members around, if someone is in the compound they will have a key to get out! The club is regularly found to be open and not a sole in sight. If you have tradesmen in the compound working on your boat then you must also be in attendance do not give them your key to gain entry.

I will endeavour to contact all remaining cruiser owners in the compound to ask for your intentions and approx. launch date. Remember it is your responsibility to organise Driver, Banksmen and Crew for your launch, you must also ensure you book the slip and hoist using the Bosuns Log Book located in the club lounge. Club events take priority over launches so organise around these.

Thank you in advance for your assistance in keeping the compound tidy.

With the gritty stuff out the way I’d like to personally thank everyone for their support over this Launch, this being my first as Bosun I can say it has been a positive experience and for once the weather was on our side, great team effort in all departments.

Bosun
