Cruiser Relaunch Weekend 11-12th April

The relaunch is fast approaching, hopefully we will get some decent weather from now on.

Please note that after launch weekend the bye-laws state that you have up to a month to exit the compound before an over stay fee is charged.

This year the hoist and tractor will be taken out of action for some much needed maintenance, this will start shortly after the 30 day period, if you are left in the compound when this starts you will have to wait till the hoist is operational again, there is no defined time period for the maintenance and there is no grace whilst it takes place, you will be charged the over stay fee.

You have been warned!

With the warning out the way I do hope all is going to plan for you all, we as usual will have a briefing before Launch, this will be on Wednesday 8th at 2000, please attend, it is important, safety is paramount during the operations.

If you are not intending to launch on the weekend you must still be available to move your boat or nominate a person to do this for you. Please inform myself or a member of the Bosuns if you do not intend to launch on the weekend, we need to know so we can plan space, no surprises on the day please.

We will be issuing another TD closer to the time with further details of the launch itself.

Please spread the word regards the Hoist maintenance.

Ian Smith
Bosun

Cruiser Relaunch Parking

It will be fairly obvious that the use of Kendall’s car park is no longer possible. I will advise alternative arrangements as soon as they are finalised.

Bearing in mind that there is likely to be more traffic movement past the compound entrance, the barrier controls are even more important. In the past a gallant band of stalwarts have taken on the task, but it would help if more members make themselves available for a short period. To that end I will put a notice on the board next to the bar for you to add your name, alternatively please email me on bobsobey or send a message on 07866 493108. I will produce a rota on the briefing evening based on the information that I have.

Many thanks

Bob Sobey
Quatermaster

New rope for old

Well that got your attention didn’t it… Actually the new rope has been purchased in support of the RIB, Dory and Pioner for the coming season’s sailing from cruiser lift in and beyond covering all members from cadets, through dinghy sailors to cruiser owners.

This has left the club with a limited amount of frayed and worn excess rope. Unsuitable for on water usage but maybe handy for tying down tarpaulins and the like. The 30m length is oil stained, but if you’re in need for a rapid lashing it will suffice. Don’t worry the good stuff has been retained for the bosun’s use.

The lines are in an orange bucket outside the garage and will remain there for a week before final disposal, help yourself.

Phil Bryant
Dinghy Captain

Asymmetric Training Day – Saturday 14th March

Tudor SC and the Vago Class Association have organised an Asymmetric Training day at the club on Saturday 14th March. The training is being provided by RYA Coach, Ed Deacon, and is aimed at sailors who want to learn more about asymmetric sailing, rig tuning and trapezing. If you sail an asymmetric class, then this is the perfect opportunity to brush up on your technique – so if you sail one of the following classes, then this training is aimed at you:

29ER, BUZZ, ISO, Laser 2000, LASER 3000, LASER 4000, LASER STRATOS, LASER VAGO XD, RS 200, RS 400, RS 500, RS FEVA XL, RS VISION

There will be a mixture of shore and water based activities throughout the day, kicking off with breakfast at 09:30 and the first shore based session at 10:00.

If you do not own an asymmetric boat, you are more than welcome to come along anyway and go for a test sail in one of 2 Laser Vago’s available during the day.

Breakfast, Lunch and Hot Drinks will be available at £8 per person.

We have 4/5 visiting boats from the Vago Class Association coming along – so please give them a warm TSC welcome. Many visiting Vago sailors will be staying overnight and we intend to put on some ‘Free Sailing’ on the Sunday, perhaps with some fun short course races – so whatever your class, please feel free to come down on Sunday 15th March and join in.

Please email Hannah Barnes if you would like to come along, so we have an idea on numbers. rearcommodore

LHRW Breakfast Galley – Volunteer Required (Sunday 3rd May)

This will count as 1 duty towards your club maintenance.

If you are registered on DutyMan then you can volunteer for this online.

If you can volunteer please contact me asap so I can confirm to the sailing committee the galley will be open that day.

Wanted – patrol boat helm and crew for the Asymmetric Coaching Day on 14th March

Calling all wetside volunteers.

Thank you to those who have made selections on Dutyman. For those who have not yet done so, we have a number of early season gaps on the roster. If you have not yet selected your duties, please could you make your selections as soon as possible, paying particular attention to events over the next month or so.

Most pressing is the Asymmetric Coaching Day on 14th March, which needs a patrol boat helm and 2 crew (one to drive the instructor). This event will have to be cancelled if we can’t staff it – which will be a great pity not just for our own sailors but for the visiting instructor and visiting sailors who are attending. If you don’t currently sail an asymmetric, this could be a good opportunity to pick up some tips whilst supporting the event. Even if you have already selected 5 events, please consider volunteering for this event as well.

Ebb & Flow

Deadline for the next issue of Ebb & Flow – Monday, 2 March 2015.

Get into print!

No doubt, we are all looking forward to getting back out on the water. If you’ve not been sailing so far this year why not at least start thinking and writing about it with an article for the spring issue of Ebb & Flow?

We need your input to make the next Ebb and Flow interesting so please let us know all about your sailing adventures and activities. If you are writing an article (and please do), a few photos if you have them help to make it even more interesting (and make it easier to adjust it to fit in the space available).

We can all learn from the nautical experiences of others so let’s hear about your sailing successes and failures – don’t be embarrassed, pseudonyms can be used if you prefer! Whether cruising or racing, why not let us have some information on your tips and or trips. What about some practical advice or suggestions for this summer. Why not write something on your favourite type of dinghy or cruiser, practical boating advice or cooking in confined quarters – all contributions gratefully received.

Other ideas for articles: what made you want to get afloat in the first place, what was your first sailing experience; what was your worst (and/or best) sailing experience; what boat would you like to own and why; sailing trivia; most useful piece of kit; book reviews; your favourite nautical film or poem?

Sailing stories, cartoons or photos are all welcome? Don’t be shy, start to write – it’s not that difficult. It’s a bit like sailing in fact – once you’ve pushed off, you’ll soon by under way!

If you have an idea, please get in touch and send your contributions to ebbnflow

Wine Committee

Hi Everyone

I would like to start by saying a very big THANK YOU to Brian Johnson who has for the last 100 years been helping out in the club and most recently behind the bar. THANK YOU for your tireless help and support.

I am looking for someone to join the wine committee. This person does not need to know about wine. However they do need to be free for 1-11/2 hours every 3 weeks to flush the beer pipes out at the club.

You will join an elite group of three who on a rota flush out the beer pipes at a time of your choosing.

Full training will be given.

If this position suits you please get in touch. wilsontranter or 02392 381962 after 17.00 please.

Thank you

Mark Tranter
Bar Manager

PLSA Representative

Brian Tansom, who has been our PLSA representative for many years now, has indicated that he would like to see if someone else would like to take over the position.

Being the club representative on the PLSA (Portsmouth and Langstone Sailing Association) involves attending 5 PLSA meetings a year, plus the AGM; these are on Tuesday evenings at ECA. Being the club PLSA representative also gets you a seat on the Langstone Harbour Advisory Committee, which meets 5 times a year on Thursday afternoons at Havant Civic Centre.

As the PLSA representative, you would be expected to attend these meetings and write a short report for each edition of Ebb & Flow.

This position would be deemed to fulfil club duty in full.

For further details, please contact me. Applications are to be submitted to the Hon. Secretary, Jan Sobey (secretary), by Friday 17th April.

Commodore

Calling all race officer and patrol boat volunteers – Dutyman now open for the 2015 season

Dutyman is now open for the 2015 season. As last year, we ask race officers and patrol boat volunteers to go into Dutyman and make their own duty selections, picking 5 (or more if you wish). Once you have selected a duty, it is yours to complete unless you subsequently swap it, so please take care with your selections. Please also ensure you are familiar with the event concerned, particularly those requiring a committee boat start, or those categorised as higher risk or family friendly events. There is further information on events on the online calendar and in the sailing section of the website.

If you would like to request training it can be requested via the Members Duty Training Request button on the secure members’ area of the website. In the next few days the Sailing Committee will be contacting those members who have already requested training, and will also be arranging shore based refresher training for all.

Heart Defibrillator

The Tudor Sailing Clubhouse now has a portable Heart Defibrillator. The Defibrillator is located in the Saloon adjacent the First Aid Box and Guest Signing In Book. There are 3 instructions on the front of the defibrillator, which when carried out, the device talks through and controls the procedure.

There are a few points to NOTE:

The pads (electrodes) are single use items.
The pads and device is suitable for age 8years and over.
The Defibrillator is NOT FOR A WET CASUALTY.
(may be towel and talcum powder?)

Chichester Harbour Race Week 17-21 August 2015

Hello from the Race Week promotion team

Dinghy sailors from your club have previously competed in Chichester Harbour’s biggest dinghy event of the year – the five-day regatta run by Chichester Harbour Federation from Hayling Island SC and familiarly known as Fed Week. It’s a great dinghy regatta with racing for 300-plus boats in 14 separate starts on three courses in the open tidal water close to the harbour mouth. We hope previous competitors will be back, along with more of your members.

For 2015 the event has a new name, Chichester Harbour Race Week, chosen to describe the event more clearly to all potential competitors, and a dedicated website provides much better information to everyone interested in the week. Do please share this news with your members.

The new event website is now live. It provides details of the event, the Notice of Race, entry fees – on-line entry is available now – and other information such as sources of accommodation on Hayling Island and activities for non-sailing members of competitors’ families.
