Plymouth Cruisers Winter Walks

Happy sailors, happy walkers, happy dogs There were lots of happy sailors enjoying a breath of fresh air last weekend on the circular coast walk from Noss Mayo. In particular the dogs found the walk very entertaining. Good to get out for an airing after all that terrible weather. The next walk will be around Western Beacon on the edge of the Moor by Ivybridge.

Help Required!

Would anyone know of a company that could build us a Launching Trolley for our new RIB? Sounds odd I know but there are few trailer companies out there and none to date have been able to offer us anything close to what we require. Our other option would be to modify the current trolley, does anyone have the skills to tackle this and fancy taking it on?

Any suggestions welcome, if you would forward them to the ‘bosun’.

Thanks

Forming Sub-Committee

At the 2014 AGM the proposal for formation of a sub-committee to look at how we recover the cruisers using the Boat Hoist was approved.

The purpose of this is to take a look at the current method with the idea of preserving the Hoist and Tractor unit. We have encountered in recent years a number of major break downs, as we are looking to keep the current Tractor unit for at least the next five years we need to examine whether we can operate in a different manor, looking into all possibilities.

The committee will be formed of 5 possibly 7 persons and be charged with looking into alternative methods of using our current equipment, input to be sought from whole membership. Once a number of solutions are formed the committee will cost these and report back to Bosun Committee, a decision will then be taken to implement a particular solution. This solution may well incorporate pieces from different ideas, its an open book!

If you wish to be a member of the above committee please forward your interest to myself.

Even if you don’t wish to join the committee we would be interested in your thoughts to alternate methods, so please take a moment and jot any ideas down, all ideas will be considered so they can be as radical as you like, you don’t need to be a cruiser owner to have a thought on this.

Looking forward to your input.

LNM No.6 (Unmarked obstruction)

Not sure how many may be venturing onto the water, but please be aware of the attached LNM from Langstone Harbour Board. I believe it relates to the sunk vessel in the photograph: http://twitpic.com/dvs2se where you can just see the top of the mast at the state of the tide the photo was taken.

Deadline for the next issue of Ebb & Flow – Friday, 21 February 2014

Get into print!

As usual, we need your input to make Ebb and Flow interesting so please let us know all about your sailing adventures and activities over the past year and your plans for the next. If you are writing an article (and please do), a few photos if you have them help to make it even more interesting (and make it easier to adjust it to fit in the space available).

We can all learn from the nautical experiences of others so let’s hear about your sailing successes and failures – don’t be embarrassed, pseudonyms can be used if you prefer! So cruising tips – or trips, race training ideas, your favourite type of dinghy or cruiser, cooking in confined quarters – all contributions gratefully received.

What made you want to get afloat in the first place. Sailing trivia, most useful piece of kit, book reviews, your favourite nautical film or poem?

Sailing stories or cartoons? Don’t be shy, start to write!

If you have an idea, please get in touch Richard Curtis and send your contributions to him at ebbnflow

Sailing Calendar, Wet Side Duties and Bart’s Bash

The TSC Sailing Committee would like to welcome members to a new season of sailing. In 2014 we have a comprehensive programme of racing and cruising for both dinghy and cruiser sailors. We have worked hard to keep variety in the programme, despite the challenges of poor evening tides and a constrained pool of wetside (race office and patrol boat) volunteers. We will also continue to run our thriving Wednesday evening cadet programme and look forward to seeing as many cadets as possible out on the water. Full details of the programme can be found on the website through the following link:

http://www.tudorsailing.org.uk/TudorSailing/05_sailing/Calendar/index.php?year=%0%&month=%%&type=%%&event=%%

If you enjoy our sailing programme but are not currently a wetside volunteer, please consider training as either a race officer or patrol boat crew. Racing cannot go ahead without race officers and patrol boat crew. Trainee race officers train alongside and are mentored by one of our existing race officers – this job is not as difficult and complex as many people think, and you will be fully supported as you learn. Trainee PBC spend time on the water, first of all on patrol boat familiarisation and handling, and then, after some experience has been gained, on more complex tasks such as capsize recovery. We have spaces on PBC training during the weekends February 22nd / 23rd and March 8th / 9th, both for new PBC and for part-trained PBC. If you would like to be trained as either RO or PBC, please contact the sailing committee by sending an email to sailing_committee. More information on the roles of RO and PBC can be found on our website through the following links:

http://www.tudorsailing.org.uk/TudorSailing/05_sailing/documents/upload/Race%20Officer%20Summary%20Guide%202014.pdf

http://www.tudorsailing.org.uk/TudorSailing/05_sailing/documents/upload/Patrolboatguidelines.pdf

Existing wetside volunteers will be contacted shortly for their duty preferences for the 2014 season. We intend to prepare the roster in a slightly different way this season, preparing the roster for the whole season in parallel with the period of membership renewal. In the unlikely event you are an existing volunteer who does not intend to renew your membership, or does not wish to undertake wetside duties this year, please let the sailing committee know as soon as possible

by sending an email to sailing_committee.

Finally, just to confirm TSC has signed up to participate in Bart’s Bash on 21st September 2014. http://www.bartsbash.co.uk/

What is Bart’s Bash? The Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation is planning a monster sized attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for “The Largest Sailing Event in the World Ever” in memory of Olympic sailor, Andrew Simpson, who lost his life in 2013. The idea is to have local sailing clubs host races that combine to create one big event race, which will take place at 11am on 21st September. We are hosting a meeting of other Langstone Harbour clubs on 18th February about how best to do this – with Tudor committed to having an event open to all our members including cadets. We will let you know more nearer the time.

Sailing Secretary

Dinghy Calendar Update

Dear all you may have noticed that the new 2014 printed Calendar is at odds with the online Sailing Events Calendar for the forthcoming Icicle 4, 5 & 6 races. This is due to an oversight on my behalf when making a bulk amendment to the sailing times. If you badger me on the slipway I can make you smile as to the detail.

Suffice to say the times for the Icicle Races in 2014 remain as per the Website pages and to confirm the start times are as follows.

  • Icicle 4 Start 11:00 16 February
  • Icicle 5 Start 10:30 2 March
  • Icicle 6 Start 10:00 16 March

Thanks for your understanding and I look forward to seeing new entrants and welcome our travelling guests to the competition.

Jubilee Sailing Trust

Dear Tudor Sailing Club Members and families

Are you are longing to get back out on the water and escape the wet UK weather?
Then why not consider a voyage on one of the Jubilee Sailing Trust ships, Lord Nelson and Tenacious!
There is a Youth Leadership at Sea scheme for young persons 16 to 25 years of age and 12 year olds are welcome with an adult on any of the Day Sails.

At the moment Lord Nelson is sailing the southern ocean en route to Argentina as part of her Sail the World challenge.
Tenacious is sailing in the Mediterranean and will then travel up the Spanish coast back to the Southampton.
Spaces are still available on these voyages and discounts are available both to first time crew and to local sailing club members (quote YC10)

As I hope you are aware, the Jubilee Sailing Trust (JST) is a Southampton based registered charity which promotes the integration of people of all physical abilities. It does so by offering the challenge of tall ship sailing on board these two very special ships. Lord Nelson and Tenacious are the only two of their kind in the world that have been designed and built to enable a crew of mixed physical abilities to sail side by side as equals.

Please view voyage details at www.jst.org.uk or phone the JST Office on 02380 449138 for further information.

best regards,
Judith Cordery

East Coast Branch Annual Dinner

Memebrs gather for a talk and annual mid winter dinner The East Coast Branch, RNSA held its annual mid winter dinner at the Holiday Inn, Eight Ash Green on Saturday 8th February 2014. The evening opened with a short but humorous talk from the Chairman and Branch Captain. Titled ‘What’s in a name’ it considered the tricky question of what name to give a vessel, considered to be harder than naming a child and whether it was bad luck to change the name.

Navitus Bay Wind farm update

Plans to develop a huge wind farm off the coasts of Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight have been scaled back, but campaigners argue the changes still do not go far enough. Navitus Bay Development, which is behind the wind farm, announced that it would remove the northern part of the proposed development in response to feedback from the general public and statutory bodies.
