Tidal Diamond 373 – Moorings, Wetside duties

Tidal Diamond No. 373

Moorings

Hello all mooring holders.

May I remind you all that there are some good low tides in March to check your mooring chains and in particular the ground chains, in recent years a number of the mooring breaks have been from the swivel down. It is your responsibility to maintain your mooring chains and keep them in good condition, it might not be just your boat that gets damaged on the way to the wall at Farlington Marshes!!

If you require the use of the Bosuns Tender please ensure you check the Log Book in the club lounge and book it, if you just turn up expecting it to be available then you might be disappointed, those who have booked it have priority.

Wetside duties for 2014-15 season – Dutyman now open

Calling all volunteer race officers and patrol boat drivers / crew – Dutyman is now open and available for you to select duties for the 2014/15 season.

In a break from the approach taken in previous years, we ask you to login to Dutyman, select the option “Volunteer for a duty”, and then volunteer for 5 or more of your preferred events in the duty category you prefer. Please complete your selections by March 31st. If possible, please fill up the early races (April, May), as we will have less time to address these. Remember, the sooner you do this, the more choice there will be of events to volunteer for. During April, we will automatically allocate the remaining open duties to volunteers on our list who have not already volunteered for 5 or more duties. At any time you may request a swap of a duty you cannot attend, using the Dutyman system.

In a few days time, we will email all volunteers on our Dutyman list with a reminder. If you wish to be removed from the list of people eligible for wetside duties, please let the sailing committee know as soon as possible by sending an email to sailing_committee. Similarly if you wish to be added to the list, please send an email to the same address, advising your interest (Race Officer or Patrol Boat) plus whether you require training or not.

RNSA Journal article from Portland Branch

A brief article compiled by our Captain about Branch activities over the last year, unfortunately omitted from the latest RNSA Journal For the Portland Branch 2013 has been a year focussed on increasing our membership, managing our moorings more effectively, and enjoying memorable cruises in the magnificent summer weather.

We Need You

An update from our Captain

A pre-season update and a look to the future Dear Members, As the intensity of the storms decrease and hopefully also the frequency, we can think about the season ahead. Having resolved the membership issues with Central and had all the Portland membership forms returned, the committee are in the process of allocating moorings and berths, refining the cruising programme and finalising the social calendar of events.

Flood Defences – North Portsea Island Consultation

You may be aware that there are proposals to improve the sea defences around Portsea Island; work on the first phase of these should begin this year. There are currently public consultations in progress to help to determine exactly what form the improved defences will take but it seems likely that we will end up with a higher seawall between the club and the sea.

The remaining consultations are on Wednesday 26th February at the Innlodge Hotel, Burrfields Road and on Thursday 27th February at the Mountbatten Centre; both are drop-in from 12 noon to 8pm. I went to the one at POC today and consider it well worth a visit.

My apologies for the short notice about these consultations but I did not know myself until last weekend.

If you cannot get to one of the sessions, there are details and an online survey at

Deadline for the next issue of Ebb & Flow – Monday, 3rd March 2014

Get into print!

As usual, we need your input to make Ebb and Flow interesting so please let us know all about your sailing adventures and activities over the past year and your plans for the next. If you are writing an article (and please do), a few photos if you have them help to make it even more interesting (and make it easier to adjust it to fit in the space available).

We can all learn from the nautical experiences of others so let’s hear about your sailing successes and failures – don’t be embarrassed, pseudonyms can be used if you prefer! So cruising tips – or trips, race training ideas, your favourite type of dinghy or cruiser, cooking in confined quarters – all contributions gratefully received.

What made you want to get afloat in the first place. Sailing trivia, most useful piece of kit, book reviews, your favourite nautical film or poem?

Sailing stories or cartoons? Don’t be shy, start to write!

If you have an idea, please get in touch Richard Curtis and send your contributions to him at ebbnflow

Slipway Mud

We have cleared the slip this week using the tractor mud scraper, due to the neap tides this might mean that there is still a small bank across the very bottom of the slip please beware. Once we come into the bigger spring tides we will fully clear it.
