Ebb & Flow
Deadline for the next issue of Ebb & Flow – Monday, 7 March 2016
Get into print!
We’re all looking forward to another’s season’s sailing. If you’ve not been out this year why not at least start thinking and writing about it with an article for the spring issue of Ebb & Flow?
We need your input to make the next Ebb and Flow interesting so please let us know all about your sailing adventures and activities. If you are writing an article (and please do), a few photos if you have them help to make it even more interesting (and make it easier to adjust it to fit in the space available).
We can all learn from the nautical experiences of others so let’s hear about your sailing successes and failures – don’t be embarrassed, pseudonyms can be used if you prefer! Whether cruising or racing, why not let us have some information on your tips and or trips. What about some practical advice or suggestions for this summer. Why not write something on your favourite type of dinghy or cruiser, practical boating advice or cooking in confined quarters – all contributions gratefully received.
Other ideas for articles: what made you want to get afloat in the first place, what was your first sailing experience; what was your worst (and/or best) sailing experience; what boat would you like to own and why; sailing trivia; most useful piece of kit; book reviews; your favourite nautical film or poem?
Sailing stories, cartoons or photos are all welcome? Don’t be shy, start to write. Cast your mind adrift and put pen to paper – or fingers to keyboard.
If you have an idea, please get in touch and send your contributions to ebbnflow

Refit work and power boat courses
We currently have our new squib ‘Little Cracker’ and Alexander Fairey 3 in the oil store space we have been kindly lent to help our winter refit work. All Crews are lending a hand in preparing, sanding, masking, painting varnishing, cleaning and everything else that goes towards our hands on roles and experience. Little cracker is now red with painted grey decks and hers and AF3’s rubbing strake are both receiving multiple coats of varnish.
We are coming to an end of our shorebased winter programme and along with handing out of certificates also means we are planning our on the water activities. Our partnership with Hardway sailing club is progressing well and will go to help our Crews achieve RYA keelboat qualifications. We have also just facilitated day one of Powerboat level one and two for two of our Crews who met instructor Paul on a cold, fresh Saturday morning in Gunwharf quays and got straight into multiple layers to help survive the building north easterly breeze. Both crews preformed superbly and with a warming hot chocolate break at midday, grew better through out with glowing reports on improvements, performance and attitude which we are proud to report made for a great day for instructor Paul also.
Our Crews are also progressing with the St Ayles skiffs with more planks going on by the day and they are really starting to look like boats now and the skills that the crews have been practicing are coming into fruition. John and the IBTC volunteers have been fantastic sharing skills with patience and proving the two generations can easily be bridged working towards a mutual goal.
The first aid crew on Tuesdays have two more sessions before completion and have really mastered the subject as well as being a pleasure to instruct so although we hope they never have to put their newly found skills to the test, they are armed with the knowledge to now be that useful person in a medical emergency on board or ashore.
Our Arts foundation crew are now coming into their own with fantastic ideas and creativity flowing between them and with a project in the pipeline that they are planning a pitch for I will hopefully report success for them next month with details of what’s in store.

Cruiser Break Ins
Over the night of 19th / 20th Feb some 15 Cruisers were broken into and various items stolen. An update for members from the exec on the break ins is attached to this TD.
Following the break ins the local Hampshire Police community team will be visiting the club on Sunday 20th March, 12pm – 1.30pm to talk to members about Immobilise, a free service where you can register valuables with the hope of being reunited with them should they be stolen and recovered by the police.

Seeking Volunteers For “Girls Afloat”
“Girls Afloat” is a project I am running within PSTT, to show females that they are capable of achieving careers and taking part in marine-based events just as well as males do.
The project’s mission is to achieve 15 (3 hour) sessions in 14 weeks, to prepare 2-6 female young people to sail in the Squib fleet at Cowes Week 2016.
I am in need of female volunteers to assist the tuition of these young sailors, who can commit their time to Tuesday afternoons/evenings from 12th April 2016 to 2nd August 2016.
If you are interested please send me an email at lauraswallow1@gmail.com.

Tidal Diamond 496 – Boats in Compound, Committee Boat Project
Tidal Diamond No. 496
Awnings and Covers on Boats in compound
I walked around the compound last weekend and noticed that a lot of ‘covers’ have become misplaced in this very windy weather. Please take some time to check yours. A couple of the boats have quite a bit of water in them and at 10lb per gallon! I also noted that many of the tyres are flat. Non-use is a ‘killer’ for tyres!
Please can you inform me of any ‘movements’ of boats. I remind you that you will need to check that your surname is clearly and obviously placed on your boat trolley. Spring is on it’s way!

Boats in Compound
In addition to the above, and following a check by Richard Barnes this weekend, it seems that there are lots of dinghies at the end of the compound that have fallen off their trailers and onto other boats. Could you please arrange to check any dinghies you are responsible for after the high winds.

Bruce – Committee Boat Project
Thank-you to all those who have helped on the committee boat project. The team have made some great progress over the last few months, including rewiring most of the boat, getting the engine running, installing all the new accessories (VHF, Horn, Depth Sounder, Flag Gantry, Pulpit etc.) and working on the woodwork. The team always welcome additional help, so if you would like to get involved in the project please contact Richard Barnes, dinghies. Any time spent working on the project can count towards your duty hours, so if you would like to get them signed off early this year, please get in contact.
The next phase of the project is to fix the rotting woodwork around the rubbing strake. If you are able to offer your woodworking skills or have a suggestion regarding where to source the following items please get in touch:
- WANTED: Hardwood planking. 100mm x 20mm section & 100mm x 10mm section
- WANTED: Rubberised D section, approximately 38mm base, 18m in length

A Busy 2016 so far…….
Wow, well, and what happened to January?
So far our crews have managed to sail for most of January including a few night sails and pilotage and the new Crews from Trafalgar school and St Edmunds school have achieved their RYA basic skills level one which they have stuck at through all manner of conditions and experiences so well done to them, and we hope to present the certificates soon.
Our shore based crews have also started ticking off some well earned qualifications including RYA Diesel engine maintenance and others are well on their way to completing RYA first aid.
Our boatbuilding crews are plugging away at the St Ayles skiffs and the two boats are starting to take shape as well as oars being made and most importantly lots of hands on tools, joinery, planning, teamwork and skills experience. The groups have all now been along to Langstone Adventure rowing and seen some of the finished boats along with learning the theory of rowing, they have also sat in a St Ayles skiff and pulled some oars and tried out dry rowing for the first time. A huge thanks to IBTC Portsmouth for the delivery of fantastic engagement in their Boathouse 4 and also Oarsome Challenges for giving us more tools to engage the Young people of Portsmouth.
We have now taken delivery of squib No4(336 little cracker) and although in need of some tlc we are confident will be a good working boat for us this season.
This is the tip of the ice berg of all that’s been going on and as always you can keep up daily through our twitter feed and weekly through our Facebook page.

Friendly Fridays – Cruiser pre-season get-togethers
Ahead of the “formal” Friendly Fridays planned for this year, (mainly because many of us cruiser folk will be away for the weekend as soon as we can on a Friday, come the sailing season) I am planning on kicking things off a bit early.
My thoughts are that any of you newer / less experienced cruiser owners (or those who have moved up to larger craft and want to venture further) can come along on a Friday evening to chat with us more experienced folk. Whether it is finding out the best places to visit with given tidal conditions, where you can get to in a given time frame, or just odds and ends of advice, there are plenty of members who have “been there & done that” whose brains you can pick.
Moira & I can be there most Fridays in the run-up to launch weekend and possibly for a couple of weeks after, until the weather picks up a bit, and I am sure other seasoned cruisers will be along too, to share their knowledge & experiences.
If you have any particular questions or things you want to find out about, drop me an e-mail at the “cruisers” address in the week before and we can make sure we are there with charts & pilot books or whatever, as required.
Roger Smith
Cruiser Captain
Summer cruise plans
As you may have read in the last “Ebb & Flow” we plan to visit north Brittany for our big cruise this year. If anyone is interested in coming along, either for the whole 3 weeks or just the last two, I would like to hear from you. If you would like to do such a trip but are nervous, come along to a “Friendly Friday” and we can chat about what it is all about. Maybe if you fancy crewing for such a trip, we can team you up with someone who would like to go, but lacks crew?
Roger Smith
Cruiser Captain
Antifoul
I am not sure how many of you have read the recent PBO tests on antifoul, but it looks like 4 brands come out tops in our region – three are definitely top-end price wise, but the fourth – Teamac “D”, is much more sensibly priced. I am planning on ordering some for Cinabbar and wonder if anyone else would be interested to help keep the costs down – Drop me an e-mail if you are interested.
Roger Smith
Cruiser Captain
Jose Vogel
For those that remember Jose and Colin Vogel, I am sorry to report that Jose passed away on 21st January 2016. Colin has asked for the message to be passed on and to say that the funeral is on 11th February at 2pm at Chichester Crematorium for those who wish to send Jose on her way, and that there is to be a wake afterwards.
