Tidal Diamond No. 583
Wildlife in Langstone Harbour
I have been informed by the Environmental Officer at the Langstone Harbour Board that she has received a number of reports of people in small craft (including dinghies, Stand Up Paddleboards and kayaks) causing disturbance to wildlife in Langstone Harbour. Reports have related mostly to our seal haul out site in Broom Channel, and to the seabird breeding colonies on the harbour islands.
Often, wildlife disturbance is accidental – a product of people not realising that their behaviour can provoke wild creatures to flee. Also, many people are unaware that wildlife disturbance can have such a negative impact on wild animals, with disturbance easily able to cause chick death and site abandonment. As a response to the recent reports of disturbance Louise has produced a Code of Conduct for wildlife Watching in Langstone Harbour. The code encourages people to enjoy our wildlife spectacles and provides tips on how to avoid disturbance.
I will be putting a copy of this at the club, but have also attached a scanned copy (the original is laminated which creates an interesting effect). Looking for a copy online (which isn’t there yet) reminded me that the Langstone Harbour Board has a number of publications and guides that can be downloaded from their website at http://www.langstoneharbour.org.uk/about-publications.php, including the Harbour Guide (with tide tables which can be handy), the Solent Seals Code of Conduct and the Annual Reports for anyone interested.

Gone Sailing
It seems that everyone is enjoying the good weather (I’ll ignore the thunder rumbling around as I type this!), so I am repeating the available bar and galley duties. Some of these may have already been taken, so do check Duty Man, but it is always a good way to both cover you club duty as well as support the social side of things and boost the club coffers (with sales). It isn’t onerous and can be quite enjoyable in fact, so if you aren’t already trained up do get involved.
