GB Row Challenge Talk – Friday 4th August

Maggie and her six crew mates (Team Ithaca) returned to Tower Bridge on 19th July as World Record Holders for being the fastest female crew to row around Great Britain, having completed this immense challenge in just 44 days.

Find out what it takes to row 2000 miles around the entire coast of Great Britain. The strength and stamina required to keep rowing whilst battling against the elements.

Hear all about the scientific data that was collected along the way.

Talk is by our very own world record breaking bar manager, Maggie.

https://webcollect.org.uk/tudorsc/event/gb-row-challenge

There are plenty of opportunities for you to fulfil some of Duty hours, especially on 19th August. Can you please check Dutyman or email me if you need any help.

Please keep those fabulous photos coming in for our RNLI charity calendar to tscmedia

Thank you,

Dinghy Racing, A Different Perspective

For those who are not aware dinghy racing at club level is a really fun, not serious way of going out dinghy sailing. You do not have to be a seasoned racer or know every racing rule under the sun. See it as a chance to be able to get out with patrol boat cover. Also, you get to practice every point of sail, tacking and gybing. Saying that, there is nothing wrong with forgoing gybing at a race mark and tacking round instead. In some cases, this can be the quicker manoeuvre so that you don’t capsize! Please don’t be put off If you sail a slower boat as we run a series called Sunday series where boats with a PY greater than 1151, typically sail a shorter course or fewer laps of the same course as the faster boats. Or you could take part in the Saturday or Summer series where we will finish everyone that goes through the finish line after a set time, regardless of the number of laps completed. Both the Summer and Saturday series are sailed from the committee boat down harbour so you have a longer day out on the water.

If this has convinced you to give dinghy racing a try then either speak to myself, the dinghy captain or pop down an hour before a race start and get chatting to people there. We are happy to talk you through how the race works. Or have a quick read or “A guide to racing” that can be found in the useful documents area of the website.

Tudor’s Friday Rowing Race Night

Thank you to those of you who attended the TSC Friendly Rowing Race evening last Friday and congratulations to the winning crew of Kean from Hamble River Rowing (HRR), Inga from TSC and Ian from TSC. Maggie Hodge was awarded the VIPER trophy in recognition of her achievement of rowing around Great Britain in a world record breaking time. However, the top prize of the wooden spoon (which this month was made and decorated by Sandy and Sue Craig) was awarded to the losing crew of Anthony from HRR, Natasha from Eastney Cruising Association and Yvonne from TSC, see photos.

The next, and last, Friendly Rowing Race evening for this season, is being held on Friday 25th August and all members are invited to come along and join in the fun either as a rower or spectator.

Thank you to all those who help with the organisation and running of the Rowing Race evenings.

Rooster Clothing Collaboration

We’re delighted to announce a collaboration between TSC and Rooster clothing. We’ll have our own portal available soon on the Rooster website to enable you to buy any piece of Rooster clothing and have it personalised with any of our official Tudor logos. Additionally (and very exciting) Rooster plan to host working groups with some of our members to get feedback on clothing for markets Rooster would like to increase their presence in. More on this to follow.

Rooster will also be bringing a pop up shop to some of our key club events enabling members and visitors to buy sailing gear and accessories. The first shop will be on August 19th at the Tudor Challenge. Our club’s fixed seat rowing challenge will see clubs from across all three harbours and beyond visit us to take part. Rooster are now one of the sponsors for this event and will be supplying lots of free kit for us to raffle. Don’t forget to put the date in your diary, to cheer on the teams, enjoy the BBQ, win Rooster kit, and do a spot of shopping.

Water Quality Survey

We have been contacted by a student currently pursuing an MSc in Coastal and Marine Resources at the University of Portsmouth. They are conducting research on the attitudes and perceptions of recreational sailors regarding water quality in Langstone Harbour. They would appreciate it if TSC members could respond to their questionnaire. It took me about 5 mins to complete.

The link to the questionnaire is: https://forms.gle/4v2rjypKxXXzNVYf9

It’s a Bug Life

We’re building a habitat for our insect friends who rule the world. And we want your help.

This won’t be just any bug box, this will be a bug mansion.

Please let me know if you have a few natural materials to donate such as wood, bamboo pieces, pine cones, wood blocks, roof tiles, burlap/hessian fabric, extruded/perforated bricks. We plan to build our bug plaza at our Regatta weekend and it will be situated close to the border alongside the community area to complement the trees and shrubs being planted there.

Nicola and I invite your children and grandchildren to come up with a fun catchy name for our bug loving haven. There’ll be a prize for the winning name, so start thinking and get your entries in by the end of August please. Buggy McBughouse already submitted ? If you, your children, or grandchildren would like to help with the building please let me know. (PS Bill, I’ve put your name down already as I’m not usually trusted with hammers ?).

Ebb & Flow

I’m pleased to be able to bring some positive news on funding for LHB (having had to wait for the official announcement). The funding is from DEFRA and will help with three key projects (lift out facilities, commercial moorings and upgrades to the Eastney pontoon). The full announcement can be read at: https://www.langstoneharbour.org.uk/post/langstone-harbour-board-secures-defra-funding-for-local-fishers. This is welcome news for the Board’s finances, particularly in the current climate and following the closing of the dredging operations from the Brockhampton quay a few years back, which put a significant dent in income. [As a note, mainly for the newer members, I chair the LHB Advisory Committee and sit on the Board itself, so have been following this for a while, and the hard work that has been put into this bid by the staff, notably Deputy Harbour Master].

With two environmental items this week, can I suggest you take a revised look at the sea wall as you are coming up the slip next time. The pattern you can see there is designed to encourage to encourage growth rather than discourage it. Not only is this good for the marine wildlife, but it also helps protect the sea wall – a win win scenario. When out in the harbour you may also notice work further south, roughly where the quay was just south of the Harvester, where a new island is being created for nesting sea birds (much like the area near the old oyster beds on North Hayling). Don’t worry, it is close to the shore so won’t impact navigation (except perhaps for the odd racing dinghy cutting things very fine near high water, or maybe putting a bid in for the Flounder trophy!).

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Let’s be careful out there.

Sword Sands Fun Day – Saturday 29th July

Let’s all make the most of having our own island so close by and spend the afternoon on Sword Sands enjoying the sun, sand and sea. Bring along your footballs, frisbees, your badminton racquets etc, along with a picnic.

The main thing is to bring yourselves and your friends and family along. Then back to the club for a BBQ and a few drinks to finish the day off.

Please book on WebCollect so we can get an idea of numbers.

There is currently no patrol boat helm or crew for this event so if you are able to then please volunteer on Dutyman.

Friday Cruise in Company

Great to see four boats out last Friday enjoying the early evening sun and breeze. Well done to the Pico for helping out the Quba when they went aground and were finding it tricky to get off the Lee shore.

World Champion Returns to Tudor!

Maggie and her six crew mates (Team Ithaca) returned to Tower Bridge on 19th July as World Record Holders for being the fastest female crew to row around Great Britain, having completed this immense challenge in 44 days, beating the previous record by 6 days.

Friends and Family (including a group of Tudor rowers) gathered at Tower Bridge to welcome Maggie and her crew mates’ home, see photos below, with coverage of the start being provided on all major news channels, plus a guest appearance on the Lorraine Kelly’s breakfast show.

Working in partnership with the University of Portsmouth, the team Ithaca boat was specially modified to collect data on microplastics, sound pollution, salinity, temperature and even traces of marine biology through DNA samples. The data will be used to assess the environmental damage and long term impact of pollutants in our seas and oceans, contributing to the largest dataset of its kind for UK seas.

The chosen charity for the team is the CanRehab Trust and donations for this can still be made through the teams just giving page https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/teamithaca.

If you would like to know more about Maggie’s immense achievement, and hear the stories that she has to tell, then she will be giving a talk at Tudor Sailing Club on Friday 4th August, tickets for which are available on web collect https://webcollect.org.uk/tudorsc/event/gb-row-challenge. Please book early to avoid disappointment.

Why not try Gig or Sliding Seat Rowing

The rowing section provides introduction sessions for both gig and sliding seat rowing.

The introduction sessions for both gig and sliding seat rowing run at 6 pm on Tuesday evenings during the summer months (alternative times can be arranged if these are not convenient). These free 1hr taster sessions are organised to suit the rower’s individual ability and are great fun.

If you would like to book onto a session then please email me at rowing.

More from NCI Gosport this week (I’m tempted to make a comment about busses here, but won’t). You can read the attached PDF, or head to https://ncigosport.blogspot.com/ where you can also find previous articles (if you forget the link there’s no need to try and find the right Tidal Diamond as it is in the Useful Links section below each week).

Before I finish I will just add that the Family Fun on Sword Sands is open to all, so if you skipped over it in the Dinghy Update above (surely you read every word each week!), then pop back and check it out – the more the merrier. I’m just hoping to be mobile enough to get on the water before the end of the season, so I’ll just have to follow on the WhatsApp groups and try not to feel too envious!

Free Money for TSC

If I told you that many companies will donate money to our sailing club when you buy something from them without it costing you any more for your purchase, would you believe me? It’s true and called “Easy-Fundraising” and I’m sure many of you will have heard of it already, so this may just be a reminder. For those who are not familiar, it is a charity shopping website for online purchases, but the great thing is you do not have to always buy through their website. There is a browser extension that can be activated and when you purchase through many commonly used sites such as Amazon and EBay it reminds you to activate the donation, if you wish. If you also spend money for work, such as business travel then the donations can mount up very quickly from flights and hotels.

For more information about the service and their mission, please follow this link:

https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/our-history-and-mission/

To start using and helping raise funds for TSC, please follow this link below or you can access it through the TSC website, under members section:

https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/tudorsailingclub/

This is the link for the browser extension, the most convenient was to use it:

https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/donation-reminder/?efr_source=website&efr_medium=easyfundraising&efr_campaign=header-navigation

I have personally raised >£1,000 for the RBL Victory Brass Band in about 5 years, so if all our members did similar it would be a great boost to the club. Finally, if anyone is wanting to use it, but unsure how to get started then I would be more than happy to help them.

A selection of items of interest this week. Firstly some attachments from NCI Gosport. First is a summary of the incidents they have dealt with so far this year. The Second has details of Stay Safe Along the Coast, which is a new NCI Coastal and Water Safe Initiative. I will also include an item from one of the watchkeepers who is also a keen sailor:

Reassurance

This was written by one of the Gosport Watchkeepers who is a keen sailor.

As a Gosport NCI Watchkeeper I know the routine of keeping a watch – being the eyes and ears along the coast. I am also aware that whilst we all work to a common understanding and methods not all stations have the same volume of activity as we do at Gosport NCI.

Recently I have been sailing in waters unfamiliar to me – from Gosport towards the Netherlands and return – via Dover. On the way to the Netherlands we sailed through strong NE winds (F5/6) in a moderately rough seas. It was very reassuring to know that I had some fellow watchkeepers along the coast watching me and knew that help would be there if we needed it. Those strong binoculars would be looking out the window and would know that we were out there.

Finally, for anyone who may have an interest in Kite Foiling, the RYA are looking for volunteers to help out with the Olympic Kite Foiling Extravaganza with will be taking place at Eastney Beach from the 16th to the 24th September. More details can be found at: https://www.rya.org.uk/events/formula-kite-euros/volunteer.

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Plaques Outside Clubhouse

Hi everyone.

You’ll have hopefully noticed we now have two plaques on the wall outside the main doors to the clubhouse. One to publicly welcome our friends from Southsea Sub Aqua Club and one to celebrate the beginnings of Tudor Sailing Club. (If you do the maths you’ll note it’s the club’s ‘official’ 75th birthday next year). Party planners start thinking.

If you are at the club on Thursday July 20th at 7pm, we plan to hold a very short ‘unveiling’ ceremony. Steve (Blackburn) from SSAC and Colin will say a few words to mark our collaboration and we’ll take some pictures that will hopefully find their way into the local press. We’ll gather by the doors just before 7pm.

On behalf of the executive committee thank you to each Tudor member that had a hand in the creation of our plaque. Each piece was upcycled and members designed and created the final piece. This was intentional as we wanted to represent the heart of the club. Thank you.

Thank You Team Tudor

A huge thank you from us to each of you that helped on Sunday at the Southsea Watersports Festival. The weather was mixed and the sea conditions challenging towards the end of the afternoon, but the teamwork and enthusiasm from those that contributed to the day was outstanding.

Particular thanks to the members that took to the water to host taster rows throughout the day. Everyone came back smiling.

Well done to the members who took part in the sea swim first thing in the morning and congratulations to Richard Bloxam who came 3rd overall, just being narrowly pipped by his son. Richard also won the RNLI Welly throwing competition. Not an official water sport but worth celebrating none the less.

Thank you everyone for showcasing our club, building our membership, and increasing the Tudor presence in our community.

A few more tweaks to the Diary Dates below. A bit of a battle to persuade WebCollect to format things the way I wanted them, but I won, so I will finish off by drawing your attention to the attached PDF. It has the July and August schedule for training courses at ASWC (next door to Tudor). Don’t forget to take advantage of your Tudor member discount by giving them a call once you’ve added the courses to your shopping basket. The discount will then be added before you pay.

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Let’s be careful out there.

PSTT Regatta Update

Explore the latest updates from the Portsmouth Sail Training Trust, where we share inspiring stories, important announcements and celebrate successes.

PSTT Regatta Update

We were sad that we were unable to host the annual PSTT Regatta on Tuesday 7th July.

Despite the teacher’s strikes, the PSTT Team decided to invite the young people to participate in races at the Andrew Simpson Centre Portsmouth. The team gathered on Friday morning, unsure if anyone would turn up. To their delight, 32 young people turned up! All who attended had a great day out on the water and enjoyed receiving their qualifications in the awards ceremony.

Below Ed Phillips, PSTT Founder and Trustee, shares how he enjoyed the day:

“I would like to share with you all the humble joy of being part of such a special day with PSTT on Friday 7th July.

As you are all aware it was a teachers’ strike day so sadly the decision had been made to postpone the formal Regatta event. It was then with a little nervousness that the PSTT team awaited to see if any of the pupils and teachers would come in their own time. Our joy when 32 pupils and so many teachers all arrived on lovely sunny day with a light breeze was palpable.

We set out onto the harbour with an eclectic array of boats and crew. Several happy hours of fun races including hunting the duck and finding the gear were the source of much merriment and friendly competitiveness. We came ashore for food, prize giving and the award of qualifications.

As an example of the challenges for our pupils, I was talking with one of the teachers about a 14 year old girl whose father had left the home years ago. Last year the mother announced she was off to the Isle of Wight and the daughter could not go with her. As a result, the daughter is left with her 19 year old sister, who has a 2 year old child. The pupil understandably faces many challenges. PSTT is, for her, the absolute pillar around which she is starting to rebuild her life. The team is amazing, there is trust, respect, and a sense of purpose and direction, underpinned by sound values. We are on a path to a better future. One in which we can all take pride”.

Paddle Mondays

New this Season – Paddle Mondays

Thank you to everyone that shared time and ideas with me last Wednesday. Lots of exciting plans for the section.

I’m delighted to launch Paddle Mondays.

Weather permitting we will Kayak every Monday evening through the rest of the summer until further notice.

Everyone is welcome. It’s a great opportunity to paddle with company, meet other members and grow your experience of kayaking and Langstone Harbour. We meet at 6pm to get ready to be on the water for 6.30pm. Naturally it is weather dependant so keep an eye out on the paddlers WhatsApp group every Monday for updates and discussion. If you are completely new to kayaking and want to discuss anything before you join in, please do get in touch with me. Please also drop me a message if you’re not currently in the paddlers WhatsApp group and you’d like to be.

Look forward to seeing you on the water.

Rowing Update

Rowers enjoy another fun filled night at Tudors Friendly Friday with a special guest appearance from a World Record Challenger

Thank you to those of you who attended the TSC Friendly Friday last week and congratulations to the winning crew of Martino from TSC, Ric from Eastney Cruising Association and Matt from the Coastal Rowing Academy. Michelle and Jez Herman were awarded the VIPER trophy. However, the top prize of the wooden spoon (which this month was decorated by Dawn Roberts) was awarded to the loosing crew of Karen and Patrick from TSC and Anthony from Hamble River Rowing, see photos.

After the races Maggie Hodge took some time out from her attempt to set a new women’s world record for rowing around Great Britain and joined the celebrations via a live link from her boat off the North East Coast of Scotland. There were lots of questions for Maggie and she and her crew mates received 3 cheers from audience at the end of her appearance. Despite some initial setbacks Maggie’s challenge is going well and she is on track to comfortably beat the existing women’s world record.

The next Rowing Friendly Friday is being held on Friday 28th July and all Tudor members are invited to come along and join in the fun either as a rower or spectator.

Thank you to all those who help with the organisation and running of the Friendly Fridays.

Happy Rowing!

Why not try Gig or Sliding Seat Rowing

The rowing section provides introduction sessions for both gig and sliding seat rowing.

The introduction sessions for both gig and sliding seat rowing are run at 6 pm on Tuesday evenings during the summer months (alternative times can be arranged if these are not convenient). These free 1hr taster sessions are organised to suit the rower’s individual ability and are great fun.

If you would like to book onto a session then please email me at rowing

Thank you

Another Tidal Diamond full of attachments. Do remember to take a look if your email client doesn’t show them inline. PDFs (of which there are none this time) will always require a quick click to view.

The eagle eyed will notice a slight change to this weeks edition (although maybe not yet as it is below this section). I’ve added a new column to the On the water Diary Dates. I’ve noted when compiling the list that some entries aren’t necessarily that clear where they fit in the sections, and others are multi section events. That’s not to say that you are confined to one section, join in with them all, but it would be a shame to miss a Cruise in Company thinking it was for the Cruiser section not the Dinghy one (or vice versa). I’ve also added links at the top to the relevant sections of the website where the full calendar can be found for longer term planning.

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Let’s be careful out there.
