GB Row Challenge Talk – Friday 4th August
Maggie and her six crew mates (Team Ithaca) returned to Tower Bridge on 19th July as World Record Holders for being the fastest female crew to row around Great Britain, having completed this immense challenge in just 44 days.
Find out what it takes to row 2000 miles around the entire coast of Great Britain. The strength and stamina required to keep rowing whilst battling against the elements.
Hear all about the scientific data that was collected along the way.
Talk is by our very own world record breaking bar manager, Maggie.

There are plenty of opportunities for you to fulfil some of Duty hours, especially on 19th August. Can you please check Dutyman or email me if you need any help.
Please keep those fabulous photos coming in for our RNLI charity calendar to tscmedia
Thank you,

Dinghy Racing, A Different Perspective
For those who are not aware dinghy racing at club level is a really fun, not serious way of going out dinghy sailing. You do not have to be a seasoned racer or know every racing rule under the sun. See it as a chance to be able to get out with patrol boat cover. Also, you get to practice every point of sail, tacking and gybing. Saying that, there is nothing wrong with forgoing gybing at a race mark and tacking round instead. In some cases, this can be the quicker manoeuvre so that you don’t capsize! Please don’t be put off If you sail a slower boat as we run a series called Sunday series where boats with a PY greater than 1151, typically sail a shorter course or fewer laps of the same course as the faster boats. Or you could take part in the Saturday or Summer series where we will finish everyone that goes through the finish line after a set time, regardless of the number of laps completed. Both the Summer and Saturday series are sailed from the committee boat down harbour so you have a longer day out on the water.
If this has convinced you to give dinghy racing a try then either speak to myself, the dinghy captain or pop down an hour before a race start and get chatting to people there. We are happy to talk you through how the race works. Or have a quick read or “A guide to racing” that can be found in the useful documents area of the website.

Tudor’s Friday Rowing Race Night
Thank you to those of you who attended the TSC Friendly Rowing Race evening last Friday and congratulations to the winning crew of Kean from Hamble River Rowing (HRR), Inga from TSC and Ian from TSC. Maggie Hodge was awarded the VIPER trophy in recognition of her achievement of rowing around Great Britain in a world record breaking time. However, the top prize of the wooden spoon (which this month was made and decorated by Sandy and Sue Craig) was awarded to the losing crew of Anthony from HRR, Natasha from Eastney Cruising Association and Yvonne from TSC, see photos.
The next, and last, Friendly Rowing Race evening for this season, is being held on Friday 25th August and all members are invited to come along and join in the fun either as a rower or spectator.
Thank you to all those who help with the organisation and running of the Rowing Race evenings.

Rooster Clothing Collaboration
We’re delighted to announce a collaboration between TSC and Rooster clothing. We’ll have our own portal available soon on the Rooster website to enable you to buy any piece of Rooster clothing and have it personalised with any of our official Tudor logos. Additionally (and very exciting) Rooster plan to host working groups with some of our members to get feedback on clothing for markets Rooster would like to increase their presence in. More on this to follow.
Rooster will also be bringing a pop up shop to some of our key club events enabling members and visitors to buy sailing gear and accessories. The first shop will be on August 19th at the Tudor Challenge. Our club’s fixed seat rowing challenge will see clubs from across all three harbours and beyond visit us to take part. Rooster are now one of the sponsors for this event and will be supplying lots of free kit for us to raffle. Don’t forget to put the date in your diary, to cheer on the teams, enjoy the BBQ, win Rooster kit, and do a spot of shopping.

Water Quality Survey
We have been contacted by a student currently pursuing an MSc in Coastal and Marine Resources at the University of Portsmouth. They are conducting research on the attitudes and perceptions of recreational sailors regarding water quality in Langstone Harbour. They would appreciate it if TSC members could respond to their questionnaire. It took me about 5 mins to complete.

It’s a Bug Life
We’re building a habitat for our insect friends who rule the world. And we want your help.
This won’t be just any bug box, this will be a bug mansion.
Please let me know if you have a few natural materials to donate such as wood, bamboo pieces, pine cones, wood blocks, roof tiles, burlap/hessian fabric, extruded/perforated bricks. We plan to build our bug plaza at our Regatta weekend and it will be situated close to the border alongside the community area to complement the trees and shrubs being planted there.
Nicola and I invite your children and grandchildren to come up with a fun catchy name for our bug loving haven. There’ll be a prize for the winning name, so start thinking and get your entries in by the end of August please. Buggy McBughouse already submitted If you, your children, or grandchildren would like to help with the building please let me know. (PS Bill, I’ve put your name down already as I’m not usually trusted with hammers ).

Ebb & Flow
I’m pleased to be able to bring some positive news on funding for LHB (having had to wait for the official announcement). The funding is from DEFRA and will help with three key projects (lift out facilities, commercial moorings and upgrades to the Eastney pontoon). The full announcement can be read at: https://www.langstoneharbour.org.uk/post/langstone-harbour-board-secures-defra-funding-for-local-fishers. This is welcome news for the Board’s finances, particularly in the current climate and following the closing of the dredging operations from the Brockhampton quay a few years back, which put a significant dent in income. [As a note, mainly for the newer members, I chair the LHB Advisory Committee and sit on the Board itself, so have been following this for a while, and the hard work that has been put into this bid by the staff, notably Deputy Harbour Master].
With two environmental items this week, can I suggest you take a revised look at the sea wall as you are coming up the slip next time. The pattern you can see there is designed to encourage to encourage growth rather than discourage it. Not only is this good for the marine wildlife, but it also helps protect the sea wall – a win win scenario. When out in the harbour you may also notice work further south, roughly where the quay was just south of the Harvester, where a new island is being created for nesting sea birds (much like the area near the old oyster beds on North Hayling). Don’t worry, it is close to the shore so won’t impact navigation (except perhaps for the odd racing dinghy cutting things very fine near high water, or maybe putting a bid in for the Flounder trophy!).
As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.
Let’s be careful out there.
