Push the Boat Out is back! Have a go at sailing in Buckinghamshire

Three clubs in Oxfordshire, Emberton Park SC, Haversham SC and Great Moor SC will all be inviting the public to try sailing during Push the Boat Out.

The launch of Girls Afloat

Our Summer Programme began after the Easter holidays and it is great to be back on the water again! This means that our Girls Afloat project has launched and our group of girls have started training towards their RYA Keelboat Level 1 and in preparation for Cowes Week 2016. I would like to thank our new volunteers, Sarah and Vicky, with their support on Squib training so far.

The weather has been in our favour for the first two weeks, which has made the girls even more keen to take part and learn as much as they possibly can. Over the  next few weeks, we will be completing man overboard drills, learn the rules of the road and points of sail. All girls are aiming to achieve their RYA Keelboat Level 1 before the Summer holidays and then start working towards their RYA Keelboat Level 2.

Although our Girls Afloat project has taken off by storm, we are still seeking female volunteers so we can get as many of these girls on the water at any one time. If you are interested or know anyone who may want to support us, please email laura@portsmouthsailtrainingtrust.org

Update on Cruiser Break Ins

Hampshire Police have bailed someone in connection with the recent break ins, identified from forensic evidence left in the compound.

The police have appealed for members who have received proforma statement forms to complete them and get them back as soon as possible to build on the case. If you were broken into and did not report it then please do via the Hants police website or by ringing 101.

Cruiser Update

Gould Trophy Race to Lymington
– May bank holiday weekend (30th April – 2nd May)

Yes – It’s that time of year already – The quick blast (or long slow drift!) down to Lymington and back over the first May bank holiday. If you don’t want to make it a race and would rather set off in your own time, feel free to come along even if only for the Saturday evening meal. On the Sunday there is usually some sort of walk (to a pub) if the weather is good, for those of you who fancy some gentle exercise.

The race signing on sheet will be in the club, but I would like to know numbers for the meal on the Saturday evening. I have provisionally booked a table for 10 at the Kings Head, just up from the quay for 7:30 – I really need to know numbers as soon as possible in case I have to increase the booking. Summer Cruise

We are starting to look at the more detailed planning for our trip to Brittany – anyone who fancies joining us for the full three weeks (or even longer if you have the time) is welcome to share ideas / suggestions as to where they would like to visit. It is still planned for us to be in the Guernsey area early in the last two weeks to meet up with anyone doing a two week trip to that part of the world.

Tudor Sailing Club Open Day, Saturday 21st May – Help Needed

Following our great event last year TSC are holding an open day on Saturday 21st May (aka Push the Boat Out / PTBO). There is a poster attached if members would like to print and put up at work, please spread the word around the local area. Prospective members that sign up on the day will not have to pay the usual joining fee. We need lots of volunteers to assist in various roles, examples are below:

  • Conducting tours of the club
  • Car park marshalling
  • Taking people out on the water in dinghies / cruisers
  • Boats that we can borrow for the day to take prospective members out in (we will put in an experienced sailor) – good boats would be Visions, wanderers, wayfarers etc
  • Loans of sit on kayaks for the day
  • People to rig boats such as Oppies / Fevas
  • Help on BBQ and bar

If you can spare some time to help make the open day a success (and increase our membership) then please get in touch.

Member Expenses

Please could I remind members who have expenses to claim that they need to fill in an expense claim form and provide receipts detailing the expense. The form should be approved by the appropriate budget holder. Please either scan and email the form and backup to me at treasurer, or place the signed form and backup in an envelope and ask bar staff to leave in the safe for me, or post to my home address as detailed on the form.

I cannot make payments unless I receive a properly completed expense form, so please don’t just leave a supplier’s delivery note with your name and “paid” written on it in the safe – it will not be processed and is likely to be lost.

I also cannot normally pay expense forms that don’t have accompanying receipts. If you have lost your original receipt, please do the following:

  1. Complete the club expense form.
  2. Write an accompanying note providing as much information as you can about the purchase, and certify that you made the purchase but have lost the receipt and have not previously made a claim for the item.
  3. Show any other evidence of expenditure you may have to your budget holder (e.g. the items purchased or credit card / bank statement).
  4. Ask them to approve the expense.

Please could I also remind members working on the bar or galley not to pay a member’s expenses with cash from the till. All expenses need to come through me, please.

Gig activity

Hi all, I am organising a Coaching session by Chris Partridge who is the Captain of “Hayling Cutters” and an experienced Gig coach. We are looking for members who are willing to “Cox” i.e. take others out. If you feel that would be within your capacity please let me know ASAP what days/times would suit you most (or those times you certainly cannot make it) so that I can arrange something with Chris. I feel sure his input will be invaluable in “raising our game”.

These are planned times out for Gig rowing over the next week. Saturday morning 23rd April 0930hrs; Wednesday evening 27th April 1800hrs; Thursday evening 28th. pril 1800hrs. If you fancy a “Blast” just email me ianducane.

What to wear? Wet or dry suits are not a good idea as they will be to warm. If it is cold then layers are best with a windcheater on top, you can peel them off as you warm up. Footwear is deckboots or similar and your feet will stay dry, or dinghy wet boots or similar if you don’t mind them getting wet. Although the Gig is “sea kindly” and very safe a buoyancy aid is always a sensible item to have on board even if it is tucked under the thwart. No experience is required for rowing this boat. Lots of fun and better exercise than any Gym.

Trafalgar Academy Presentation

Former Portsmouth football star awards Portsmouth Sail Training Trust and Trafalgar Academy students with their first RYA qualifications

 

Thirteen year 8’s, 9’s and year 10 students from Trafalgar Academy got the surprise of their life when former Portsmouth FC star Alan Knight MBE came into their assembly.  Knight, who holds the record for the most appearances at a single club, was at Trafalgar’s Year 10 Celebration Assembly to award the pupils qualifications that they have achieved with the Portsmouth Sail Training Trust (PSTT).

PSTT provides extra curricular training, using the practical life skills required to learn about sailing and boat building to build confidence and leadership skills for young people. The youngsters, all aged between 13 to 15 years, joined the PSTT schools scheme in September 2015 and have been working weekly towards their RYA Seamanship Level 1, their first practical sailing qualification.

PSTT’s Principal John Gillard commented, “The Trafalgar students have really taken to our programme and demonstrated a great attitude to all their projects with us. The RYA Seamanship Skills is their first and important step towards a variety of professional qualifications, which our young people will achieve with PSTT. They are currently working on the St Ayles Rowing Skiffs as part of our boatbuilding training, in association with Portsmouth’s IBTC and Oarsome Chance. Also, their RYA Diesel Maintenance, which is very popular!  Then they will go on to First Aid, Food Hygiene and other qualifications that will help their employability.”

On giving the certificates Alan Knight said “Well done to all the students for preserving and achieving their first qualification with PSTT.  And well done to PSTT for bringing this great initiative to our inner city schools.”

Sonny Adams, one of the Trafalgar students to receive his certificate remarked afterwards, “It was inspiring to meet Alan Knight. I believe working with PSTT helps

my education.”  Fellow pupil Tino Brown commented, “This gives me more options for my future.”

Low Water Cruiser – Saturday 16th April, 11:00

The Low water cruise is the perfect opportunity for a ‘shake down’ after the long, windy winter.

Phil Bryant, our illustrious Vice-Commodore will be your cruise leader for the day, expertly guiding you around the narrow channels of Langstone Harbour. He will be giving a briefing to all participants at 10:45 on the club lawn, with departure from the slip shortly after and congregating at the first liaison point in the entrance to Russell’s lake for around 11:15.

Low Water is at 13:34 (1.7m), so the Tudor fleet will take advantage of the outgoing tide, as we sail down harbour. It is highly likely that Phil will seek some form of refreshment during the day, so bring some cash monies in a water proof container and you will be able to join him for a hot lunch / coffee / other form of brown liquid refreshment from the Ferry Boat Inn.

Please bring plenty of warm clothing, as it is still debatable if the round yellow circle in the sky will make an appearance. If you have any other burning questions that can not wait for the briefing, please email Phil – vicecommodore

Self-Timed Race – Sunday 17th April, 11:00

This is a new concept for the dinghy calendar in 2016. Competitors are asked to congregate around 10am in front of workshop to discuss their preferred format for the race and synchronise watches (yes… bringing a watch is essential for this race!). The format, course, start sequence, finish sequence, results and rules are at the discretion of the sailors participating – so this will either be a shining example of a democracy in action, or quickly descend into chaos. This is your opportunity to mould this event format, so bring your ideas and your sense of humour!

Please note: there is no organised patrol boat cover – so sailors should carefully consider the weather conditions prior to taking to the water. However, if anyone would like to practice their patrol boat skills, we are happy for the patrol boats to be launched. If you can practice your PB skills in the vicinity of the Self timed race fleet then you will be providing them with an element of security in knowing that you are there. Please note that you do not have an obligation to cover the whole race – the racers know that they are unsupported so any cover you chose to offer for part or the whole of the race is a fortunate benefit to them.

The Sailing Committee are starting to plan how we can meet our commitment, voted for at the last AGM, to have all Tudor Patrol Boat helms qualified to RYA Level 2 within the next 5 years. The questionnaire will give us lots of good information to use as a starting point for this project. We have already had a strong response which is much appreciated. We will be closing the survey on Friday 22nd May so it will be much appreciated if anyone who has not done so already could go online and complete this for us.

Hi all, the Gig is now being used frequently even though it is restricted by my diary. Here are the planned times on the water for the coming week:

COMPOUND Re-Org Saturday 9th at 08:30 HOURS
**Opportunity to do your club maintenance hours**

Please make sure your trolley is marked clearly with your surname to make identifying it as quick as possible on Saturday. Many boats are NOT named and this makes the re-org difficult, time consuming and frankly is not fair. I have some name tags to tie to boats – see me. Obviously boats will have to be moved so it is important that the tyres are pumped up, the trolley is in good order and the boat is not full of water – having looked around in the compound yesterday this is not the case at the moment! We usually have a large number of members helping on the compound on re-org day. Can you please bring along some gardening gloves and together we can shift boats, clear weeds and generally clear up our compound and surrounding areas. I will bring some ‘strong’ bags. Let me know about any ‘movements of boats’ in the compound. Email is best way please.

This is an excellent day for new members to meet us, please make yourself known.

Cadet Pre-season meeting: Wednesday April 13th 7:00

Please note the new earlier starting time!

As usual we will be having a pre season meeting, collecting sign-on sheets, and forming the 2016 register. There will be a short briefing from me. Our welfare officer will be giving a short child protection briefing. We will also run through how to rig an oppose, topper and our new club boats- the Feva and Quba. I would like everyone, children and parents to know this so we can all help each other during the frantic half hour before we launch.

Cruiser re-launch

The cruiser re-launch went very well with most members helping each other. Many thanks to everyone who helped make the weekend the success it was. We used the Sunday to make sure the dinghy end was clear and did a lot of ‘litter picking’ in the compound – sadly this was rubbish that some members had left for others to clear up! It was heartening to hear compliments re the way we arrange / carry out the ‘boat lifts’. There are a lot of wooden posts, blocks etc that belong to someone; this is mainly just inside the North gates. If this is yours please remove by the end of the week. Cheers.

GIG Activity

The Gig is now owned by the Tudor Sailing Club. A stainless keel band has been fitted so it will now withstand the slipway usage.

In the short term the Exec. have asked me to oversee and control its usage, obviously this will seriously restrict its “outings”……therefore we rapidly need to build a list of members who are willing to be responsible for putting her on the water……Please let me know a.s.a.p. if you are happy with this role …..I am working on the coaching aspects. Obviously it will take a while for a usage pattern to emerge, but to get things started I propose to put her afloat this coming Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th mornings @ 0930hrs …….and Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th in the evening @ 1800 hrs…..

The best crew arrangement is a Cox and 3 oarsmen….(one sat central sculling with twin oars and a bow and stern with single sweep oars)….i.e. 4 in total….It is easy to swap about while afloat if the cox wants to row or the crew want to change positions. Let me know your preferred slot time …..I will be working to have some sort of interactive page on the club site for crewing as soon as possible….in the meantime I will reply to all who email me wanting a place as to whether the crew is full or not.
