ASTO Small Ships Race 2016

On Friday 30th September, Portsmouth Sail Training Trust joined a large variety of sail training crews and vessels for the ASTO Small Ships Race in Cowes. Our crews from Charter Academy and Trafalgar School sailed ‘Yoda’ (Sigma 38), our largest sail training vessel, over to the Isle of Wight for the weekend event, departing from Gunwharf Quays soon after they finished school. On arrival at Cowes, we were greeted by a mixture of familiar faces, including Jolie Brise and Merrilyn, and also new faces amongst the 25 sail training vessels attending the event. On arrival we were also treated with a box of cupcakes made by TS Vigilant.

On the Saturday morning we were up bright and early in preparation to compete for the best dressed boat in the “Parade of Sail”. This included dressing the crew up in fancy dress attire and dressing the boat in flags to appear as the ‘most fun’ sail training boat to sponsors at the Royal Yacht Squadron, Cowes seafront. An hour later, we joined other sail training vessels on the start line to begin the 4-hour race across the Eastern Solent. Our race began from squadron line, outside cowes, past No Man’s Land Fort and back to Cowes.

After a forecast expecting 15 knots of wind with gusts of up to 30 knots, we were disappointed with our slow start, a breeze of no more than 5 knots and terrestrial rain. However, after the rain had passed, we were blessed with blue skies and increasing winds, meeting the expectations of the weather forecast, taking us on a downwind leg towards our first mark. After rounding the down wind mark we made the decision to downsize the foresail to regain more control upwind towards the finish line. The weather was a bit temper-mental, including occasional showers, wind shifts and big gusts. Our crew worked extremely hard to get us second over the line in our class.

In the evening, our crew had the opportunity to socialize with the other sail training crews at the prize giving ceremony and party in Cowes Yacht Haven. Knowing that we came 2nd over the line in the race during the day, we were eager to find out our overall position after the handicap had been calculated. We were so excited to find out that we had received a prize for coming 1st in our class and 2nd overall in the race, losing to Jolie Brise by just 4 minutes! Our crew then celebrated by getting on the dance floor and showing off some of their moves to everyone else.

The following day was not such an early start, as for the late night before but it was a very easy sail back, going down wind and with the tide back to Portsmouth.

We had a brilliant time and we are so proud of our crew for working so hard to achieve a great result. Well done to Kacey-Ellen, Elinor, Kaya, Luke, Maryam, Zia and Declan. Lets work hard to get an even better result next year!

Sunday Racing

We have begun our Sunday series of squib racing and our crews are now competing for the inaugural HMS Bristol trophy comprising of six points scoring races and a final- a little like the Americas cup format but on Squibs.

Jack Tupper of Charter Academy took the first race helming Jet  in light airs and shifty conditions with the breeze slightly steadier for race 2 won by Toren hill of Trafalgar Academy and followed in closely by the Charter Girls boat in second.

Week 2 began in bright sunshine with very little wind and a strong ebb tide and with a lot of jostling at the start for best position the race was led for three quarters of the course by Casey Hobbs helming Little Cracker only to fall into a windless hole on the final leg and get overhauled by Kacey Ellen Thornton helming  Jet  and also Caitlin Cady on AF3 who true to form had steer a precise and consistent course and with the all Girl boat of GTP bringing up the rear. Race 2 was a different story as the breeze filled in nicely from the south west and after an equally competitive start the fleet were neck and neck down the reaching leg with all 4 boats within touching distance and some good friendly banter ensued. AF3 and Little Cracker went round the top mark together only to sail straight into a tidal eddy off the pier and have the all girl crew of GTP sail wide and into a fresher breeze to go on and take the second race.

Its all to play for looking forward to week 3 with the General consensus  that light airs and sunshine are the favourable conditions for Sunday racing and momentum and enthusiasm are strong and getting stronger by the week.

Information on compound and hoist fee charges

At the SGM on 10th May 2016, members agreed to some changes to compound and hoist fees. The changes were proposed to allow the club to complete its migration to our new membership and subscription system “Webcollect”, which does not support square foot or linear foot charging. At the SGM, members agreed to change the method of charging for compound space and hoist fees to banded rates, based on similarly sized boats. Members further agreed the groupings of boats into bands, and the rates applicable to each band. Details can be found in my presentation to the SGM, which can be read by following this link:

Langstone Harbour Race Weekend – Friday 3rd June / Saturday 4th June / Sunday 5th June

The 8th annual Langstone Harbour Race Weekend will be taking place on 3rd- 5th June 2016. There will be 3 down harbour races on the Saturday and 3 on the Sunday. We are welcoming back the Laser 4000, Laser Vago, Buzz and ISO class associations to the event, who are using the weekend as part of their traveler series. This year, we are cramming the normal 3 days of competition into just 2, because of the unsuitable tides over both May bank holiday weekends. There will be a social at Tudor Sailing Club on Friday 3rd June, with food provided by members of Langstone Sailing Club (as we are not able to enjoy Langstone SC’s normal hospitality this year). Locks SC will be hosting a BBQ on Saturday afternoon following the racing, with prize giving hosted by TSC on the Sunday. There will be a race briefing on the Friday evening at approximately 8pm, which will be repeated on Saturday morning for those who are unable to make the Friday night. A notice of race, including start times and other important information can be found on the event website – www.langstonerace.com

Online Entry is now open, so please CLICK HERE TO ENTER

Cruiser Volunteer Required – Saturday 4th June and/or Sunday 5th June 2016

The Langstone Harbour Race Weekend organising committee are looking for a cruiser owner who might be able to help support the LHRW 2016 by acting as a committee boat. The committee boat that has been supporting the event for the past 7 years is unavailable on the LHRW this year and we are looking for 1 or 2 cruisers owners from Tudor, who might be able to stand in at the last minute. Locks Sailing Club provide a full race committee to run the racing programme. An overnight marina berth in Southsea marina will be arranged and paid for during the weekend. The race committee will provide full provisions for the weekend. And the LHRW organising committee will offer a reward for the cruiser owner(s) at the prize giving ceremony (normally in the form of a good single malt!).

If you are able to offer support for this fantastic spectacle of dinghy racing, please contact Hannah Barnes, commodore

Tidal Diamond 510 – Geoff Steele, Maintenance Opportunities, Patrol Boats, Friendly Friday, Gig

Tidal Diamond No. 510

Geoff Steele

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Geoff Steele. Geoff was Director of Portsmouth Outdoor Centre for 20 years and a great friend and supporter of Tudor Sailing Club. Sadly, Geoff was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in 2013 and died peacefully at home on 28th April. His wife Alison, who also worked at the Outdoor Centre and will be known to a good number of members, is following Geoff’s wishes by urging all those who knew him to remember him as someone who loved boats, the sea and had an immense love for Langstone Harbour.

Geoff’s funeral will take place at Wessex Vale Crematorium, Hedge End at 1.45pm on Tuesday 17th May. All friends welcome. Dress is smart but not black please.

Tudor Patrol Boat Scenario Discussion – NEW START TIME

Please note that the start time of this session will be 8:30pm, rather than 7:30 as previously published. As we are running a Friendly Friday session, this will still give people the chance to get out on the water beforehand.

Paul Rivington will be running a discussion session for all Patrol Boat helms and crew. During this session, Paul will be explaining a number of scenarios that we could face and will be asking everyone to consider what their course of action would be. We can then discuss the relative risks and merits of possible options before hearing the choices that Paul would like to see us taking.

It can be all too easy to consider someone’s competence as a Patrol Boat helm by their boat handling skills but, in most cases, the relative safety of individuals on the water will be enhanced or degraded far more significantly by the quality of decisions they make in the heat of the moment. This session will allow us to consider a wide range of scenarios, both in and out of the harbour, in calm or deteriorating weather and in racing or cruising scenarios and we can challenge ourselves (out loud or just in thought!) about the decisions we would take.

I highly recommend this as an excellent way to refresh your decision making skills and, as a club, we hope that all PB helms and crew will make every effort to attend (including those who have not yet got their Tudor PB1 or PB2).

The bar will be open and we will be firing up the BBQ so please feel free to bring along something to cook. Will Stokely
Sailing Secretary

Friendly Fridays – Friday 13th May 2016, 19:00

The second Friendly Friday this season starts around 19:00 at the club and as an added bonus coincides with high water this week!

TSC invite all members to get on the water in the company of others and enjoy our wonderful facilities and sailing area. Help will be on hand to those members looking for advice and support, from rigging your boat, to building up your confidence on the water. Last week, owing to the lack of wind, club members rallied round and helped a relatively new club member with his Wanderer so that he is ready to take to the water. If you need some help with a tricky boat fix, this is your opportunity to enlist the knowledge, advice and tools of fellow club members.

After the water activities the TSC gas BBQ will be available, so if you fancy some food post activities, please bring your favourite meats or meat substitute and accompaniments to cook on the grill. The TSC bar will also be open to keep you hydrated with your favourite tipple.

The club dinghies (Feva’s & Q’Ba) will be available for those who wish to try them out in an informal environment. Help will be on hand to show you where they are stored and how they are rigged. We are also encouraging all our kayaking members to come and enjoy a paddle.

Any trained Tudor patrol boat helms / crews looking to brush up their boat handling skills are also welcome to take out one of the TSC patrol boats.
If you would like any more information, would like to book a club boat, arrange a session in a patrol boat or have any other questions, please contact Richard Barnes, Dinghy Captain. dinghies or call me on my telephone number published in the club calendar.

Maintenance Projects

The maintenance committee has been working steadily with the help of members to ensure the clubhouse is kept in a good state of repair as required in the terms of our lease and meeting all the statutory regulations such as legionnaires checks , PAT testing and fire safety. However we need to push ahead with various projects and are seeking members who have professional experience and would be willing to advise us.

  1. Fencing contractor, for improved compound security.
  2. Electrician, improved extraction for the changing rooms and lighting for the club room to allow for different functions.
  3. Drainage / Groundworks, to ascertain the viability of connecting the clubhouse to mains drainage.

General work available towards your maintenance:

  • The galley needs redecorating
  • Some barge boards require replacing due to the timber rotting
  • The paving outside the front entrance could be improved by being repaired and repointed.

Please contact the maintenance committee if you are able to offer assistance maintenance.

Rona Residential

Over the Easter break, we were  lucky enough to be offered places aboard Merrilyn, The Rona Sailing Projects Ocean 62 provided we could put a worthy crew together at short notice and with an offer like that we pulled out the stops and went for it. So 9 of us left Portsmouth for the Hamble and join the boat in nice sunshine and a pleasant breeze.

Together with the 6 crew on board after a brief from Skipper Mike and familiarisation below and on deck, we sailed into Southampton water for some mob drills and then for a sail down the Solent.  After a night on anchor in Totland bay which presented sea legs all round we headed off at sunrise the next day towards Weymouth with a stop off at Lulworth cove for lunch. From There we carried on towards Dartmouth and after a cracking reach across Lyme bay we were escorted in by a pod of dolphins which delighted everyone.

After a morning of dinghy handling up river we made passage to Brixham to await a fair tide to carry us back across the bay which proved to be the best sail and experience of the trip so far although the wind was fickle at times, we made a good passage time and cracked on through the morning and into Studland for lunchtime and began a deep clean and onto Poole harbour for the evening. We had a good meal again on board followed by games and a restful night alongside in preparation for a sail back in to the Solent arriving in East Cowes for our final evening a board including reports and debriefs for crew.

Returning to The Hamble river on day 7 we had sailed 250 miles, all crew had cleaned, cooked, stood watches sailed, trimmed steered enjoyed and engaged on all levels. Everyone involved took something valuable away with them and all crew learnt a lot of new skills. Two of the crews were given awards to return as they had excelled themselves through the week and they also achieved RYA competent crew certificates, 3 others achieved their RYA start yachting certificates and all experience offshore sailing for 7 days and grew throughout the experience.
