From politics to pontoons as minister tries sailing

Welsh Government minister Lord Dafydd Ellis Thomas has helped to Push The Boat Out in Wales, with the chance to go sailing during a lunch break in Cardiff Bay.

The Bosun Challenge – Raising money for RN&RMC

Following on from his 2016 record-breaking double-handed sail in a Bosun dinghy from Plymouth to Portsmouth via France, Phil Slade is about to repeat the challenge, this time single-handed from Dartmouth to the Channel Islands and back. He plans to depart from BRNC on Monday 24 June for Guernsey, then to Jersey from where he will return to Dartmouth non-stop, a total distance of about 200 Nm.

Anti-fouling best practice initiative launched

The Protect, Collect and Dispose Campaign This new initiative has been launched and involves the British Coatings Federation, the RYA and British Marine joint environment initiative, The Green Blue and The Yacht Harbour Association and intends to raise awareness of the environmental issues surrounding the use of antifouling.

Safer access to Cowes Harbour

Eastern Channel opened There is now a more direct, all-tide route between the Solent and Cowes for yachts up to 20m in length. A new, dredged Eastern Channel has been opened, replacing the previous Small Craft Channel. Work on the channel began in January as the dredging could only be carried out over the winter, due to the eel grass beds off East Cowes.

UK Search and Rescue Drone

Trial under way A year long study taking place off the coast of Essex will involve the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the RNLI and Essex Police's Drone Unit. At the end of the pilot scheme, the impact of the drones on coastal search and rescue activities will be assessed to find out if unmanned aerial vehicles, known as UAVs, have a future in RNLI and MCA operations.
