Cruiser racing

On the 29th of July the RYA published guidance notes on sailing and racing with individuals from different households which will enable us to restart the Cruiser Racing Programme. Whilst many single-handed or single household participants have enjoyed being back afloat since mid-May, this new guidance now gives clear direction to those who enjoy sailing or racing as part of a team. The RYA has successfully demonstrated that boating is appropriate for teams of sailors made up of different households to be permitted to sail and race together providing the appropriate mitigation is in place which will be the responsibility of each individual crew to follow.

A revised sailing programme has been formatted which we will be updated on the Website today. We have managed to plan in x3 Gales series, x2 Forts and Fairways plus the Riley (round the island) and Nab Tower races. To save the need to sign in I am proposing to use a “WhatsApp group” to manage signing in and recording finish times. If you are happy to join the group and wish to race please could you forward me your mobile number and I will add you to the group, my mobile number is 07808828552. You will obviously need to download the App if it isn’t already installed on your device.

Finally I also wanted to gauge interest in running the belated “Gould Trophy” on the weekend of the late August Bank Holiday. Favourable tides with a HW of 0900 on the Saturday and 1600 LW for the return leg on Monday. Please let me know if there is interest and we will add it to the calendar.

Dinghy Racing

Saturday was the first dinghy race held since 26th January and I would like to thank everyone who helped to run and take part in the race. The next race is scheduled for this Sunday 9th August with a start time of 15:30. If you are intending to take part in the race please make sure you are signed up to the series on Sailevent. And on the day please respond as soon as possible to the “are you racing with us today?” email. This helps to ensure that the event can be run as smoothly as possible.

Waiting for the Tide

We have had a request for help with a questionnaire for an MSc. It has direct relevance to Langstone Harbour, so rather than paraphrase the details further…

Microplastics Questionnaire

My name is Eleanor and I am currently carrying out research into user perceptions of microplastics at Langstone Harbour as part of my MSc dissertation. I would be very grateful if you could please take 5-10 minutes of your time to fill in this questionnaire which is integral to my research.

RYA SafeTrx

This is a useful app at any time, but perhaps particularly at the moment. Full details are available at:

https://www.rya.org.uk/knowledge-advice/safe-boating/keep-in-touch/Pages/safetrx.aspx

but basically it allows you to record details of your vessel and crew, then add details of trips and expected arrival/return time. These details are available, along with periodically recorded location data from you phone, to the Coastguard if you are reported overdue.

The app is free to use for everyone, not just RYA members, and could just be a life saver. You can also manage it through the website: https://safetrx.rya.org.uk/
