Zoom Bingo

To all members

Your new social committee members have been brainstorming how we can meet up in these times of social distancing and would like to invite you to our first social event of 2021, Bingo!

We hope many of you will join in to have a bit of fun and maybe win a prize or two. There will be four games and a variety of prizes to be won (chocolate and alcohol).

The event will take place on Zoom on 19th February at 7pm.

As we are all currently unable to meet up in person, it would be great to see as many of you as possible, open a bottle or two and get to know each other better.

If you fancy giving it a go, please send your contact details (name and address) to socialsec so we can post your bingo cards ready for the game.

Eyes down!

Waiting for the Tide

OK, the item above is the same as last week, but I’ll make no apologies for reminding everyone that there is actually a social event in the calendar – virtual may not be as good as in person, but I think it may have the edge in the current circumstances. There’s been a good response so far, but there’s definitely room for more.

To continue with the theme of the past two weeks I am attaching an old Ebb & Flow article. This time from November 1986, so almost 35 years ago. It is an article I wrote about crewing on a cross channel trip. I have left the front cover of the Ebb & Flow in the document for additional interest, and with the colour of the paper used for photocopying I’ve also left in the closing comments by the then editor Mark Wilshaw, with an early version of Diary Dates, and a request for copy to be typed (I presume rather than hand written) how times have changed!

Having read the article through before sending I’ve noted a few omissions, presumably to spare embarrassment. Enough time has probably passed, so I will add that on Perfect Harmony we had some fun with a newly installed air cooled tractor engine, so had to have various hatches open to keep it cool at times. I few repairs were done at points on the trip, and we had in interesting experience heading down from Caen to Ouistreham through the locks under sail as the vertical drive shaft wouldn’t let use get into gear. Everyone thought we were being very flash, but we just had the luck of the wind being in the right direction to allow us to keep going. I also have a memory of a rather sudden broach while I was steering at one point as the rudder disengaged with the water on the crest of a large wave – pre stretched ropes stretch rather a long way in practice! I also remember being surprised at the collective skippers considering that we’d be back before the strong winds that were forecast for ‘later’ when the trip was going to be around 24 hours – possibly a lesson in not assuming experience always gets it right! Sadly Perfect Harmony was lost in the storms the following year.

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address if you feeling isolated and cut off from the world. It is always nice to hear from members, and any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Stay safe.
