Recent Rowing

Summer finally arrived for June’s Friendly Rowing Race evening

Unlike the first two rowing race evenings of the season, the sun finally came out and the wind dropped last Friday to provide a beautiful summers evening for the Tudor rowers and their guests to enjoy. Thank you to all those who helped with the organisation, and the private boat owners who allowed their boats to be used for the racing.

Congratulations go to the winning crew of Jamie from Tudor, Andrew from Dell Quay with excellent coxing by Isaac. Also well done to Audrey, Ian, Jo and Graham who picked up this month’s VIPER trophy in recognition of all the effort they put in to get four Bursledon Gigs from Tudor down to Venice for this year’s Vogalonga. The big prize of the evening, however, went to Lydia and Ladina from Tudor and Crazy Jonathan from the Crazy Boys, who won this months wooden spoon which had been lovingly created by Dawn, see attached photos.

The Tudor Rowers look forward to welcoming anyone who is interested in joining them for the next Friendly Race evening on 26th July.

The Tudor Monster reappears at Seaford

Tudor Rowers re-established their friendship with Rowhedge Rowing Club last Saturday when they formed a joint squad with the Essex based club at the Seaford Pilot Gig Rowing Regatta. Despite not having had much experience of rowing Pilot Gigs the Tudor Rowers put in a great performance against experienced crews achieving 3rd in the men’s, 4th in the mixed and 5th in the women’s categories.

Congratulations go to all members of the Rowdor squad aka The Tudor Monster.

A couple of quick LnTM this week. Firstly from KHM about a Cross Solent Swim on 7th July. See https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/khm/portsmouth/local-notices/lntm/2024/24-84-cross-solent-swim-7-july-2024 for details.

Next, and I have mentioned this a couple of weeks ago, but it is worth mentioning again now there is a notice from LHB. There is now real time tide and weather information from the Harbour Office at Langstone Entrance. More details at: https://mailchi.mp/25f6ce61d5a5/local-notice-to-mariners-langstone-harbour-10642398?e=03ba08e68f.

Before I sign off for this week I’ll add a quick “save the date”:

7th & 8th September – 75th Anniversary Regatta

This will be a fun event whether you are shore side or on the water, so book the time in your calendar so you don’t miss it.

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds always most welcome.

I hope to see some of you on Saturday 29th June for a lovely paddle in company over to Hayling Island. You can get a coffee and a bacon roll, or an ice cream, at the cafe on the beach by the Ferry Boat Inn.

We’ll launch at 10.00am, the tides will be great, and the weather is looking good, so slap on your sun screen and your 😎 and come along. There’ll be time to have a look at the Mulberry Harbour on the way back if anyone wants to do that. Any questions just shout.

There’s another planned for 27th July with a 9am launch so save the date.

Fareham Sailing & Motor Boat Club Regatta

FSMBC laid on a great regatta over the 22/23 June weekend, including some lovely warm sunny weather and a light breeze. Saturday was dedicated to the rowing heats, with nine women’s and ten men’s teams taking part, along with a good number of Scout teams. The boats for the adult races were a pair of large and heavy boats that were a big contrast to the Bursledon Gigs with which we were familiar. This was a steep learning curve for our rowers and coxes!

Tudor was represented by one women’s and one men’s team. Our women were short of a cox, but found a very keen volunteer from Portchester Sailing Club. Races were run on a head-to-head format over a short ‘sausage’ course around two marks. Both Tudor teams came through their heats as winners, each posting the second fastest times of the day. Meanwhile onshore, there was BBQ catering running from early in the day. Starting with very popular bacon rolls and moving on to Burgers and Hot Dogs, with hot and cold drinks to keep everyone refreshed. There was also a well stocked bar, which may have attracted a passing interest!

Sunday saw the day start with sailing racing in the local Fareham Lugger boats. These small scow type boats were sailed single-handed by sailors who clearly knew the boats and the waters well. The result was some close and entertaining sailing right in front of the clubhouse. Sailing was followed by the rowing semi-finals and then the finals. Tudor men comfortably won their semi-final in a good time. In their semi-final, our women came a very creditable second, only losing by 3 seconds to a team that suddenly found a lot more pace than on Saturday and would go on to win the final.

The men’s final was a head-to-head with the team from Fareham, who were multiple winners of this annual event.had posted the fastest time in the heats. Tudor had matched this time of 3′:03″ in the semi, so we were set for a very close race! In the end it was Tudor who were victorious by one second… an amazing 2′:52″ race!

After competing, the bar provided welcome drinks which were much enjoyed! There was a very exuberant prize giving and a very good group of A Cappella singers kept us entertained with a great selection of Sea Shanties.

Tudor made a lot of new friends over the weekend and it was a pleasure to visit this very welcoming club and enjoy its great waterfront location. Well done to our Bronze Medal Ladies: Nina, Kirsty, Ladina, Nikki and their cox Valarie. Our men’s winning team: Martino, Rory, Mike, Crazy Rich and their cox Paul.

Ebb & Flow

Just the Ebb & Flow section this week, but that doesn’t mean there’s no news.

First item of interest is the new Real Time Tide and Weather information from the Langstone Harbour Board office. This provides quite a lot of interesting data that is local and useful for all water based activities in Langstone. It has just been launched and can be found at: https://www.langstoneharbour.org.uk/realtime-weather.

Next item is an interesting article from the University of Portsmouth on the data collected by the the GB Row Challenge Team Ithaca. Not only did they set a Guinness World Record, they collected valuable scientific data, which this piece gives an insight into. Read more at: https://www.port.ac.uk/news-events-and-blogs/news/data-collected-by-record-breaking-rowers-builds-a-unique-picture-of-coastal-biodiversity.

I will round off with a few items from the Tudor calendar. Fridays are usually a good night if you are feeling social, with a variety of Friendly Friday activities. You can keep up to the minute on these and bar opening details by joining one of the WhatsApp groups listed below.

On the water we have regular events on Mondays with Paddle Mondays. Wednesdays have a dinghy Cruise in Company as well as Cadets on the Water, and Thursdays we have Women on the Water. That’s the regular events, if you check the website calendar (again linked below) you can find the full list of events. Between now and the end of June we have Summer Series 1 & 2, the Langstone Regatta, the Ian Silk Trophy and Forts and Fairway 1, the Priory Bay Cruise and a Family Fun Day. Plenty to look forward to.

Paddle Board Survey

As you may know as part of our club development planning, we have a team working on the introduction of club paddleboards for Tudor members to hire alongside the kayaks, gigs, and dinghies already available.

It’s an exciting venture to grow the value we offer to Tudor members and we are working with a local company FatStick. We are also working with ASC to bring you additional SUP courses for new and established members alike, and applying for additional external funding for equipment and storage.

It would help us greatly to get your support. Please click on the link below and register your interest and support.

Thank you.

Booking & Paying to use Club Boats

As you know, we have a variety of club boats available to hire which is a great way to enjoy the water without the expense of ownership, maintenance, compound space etc. And a great way to try out a new water sport at the club. As the summer season ramps up it’s timely to remind everyone that club boats need to be booked in advance to avoid any confusion or disappointment and also paid for. It’s a small fee which goes towards maintenance of the boats and ensuring we can keep and expand our club fleet offering

Here’s a summary of the links you need. Remember you need to book the boat and then pay for it. It’s worth doing the maths for your intended annual usage to see if buying a season ticket will be more cost effective for you.

You’ll also find helpful guides on booking and paying in the useful documents section of our club website 👇🏽 Look under ‘All section documents ‘.

https://www.tudorsailing.org.uk/TudorSailing/?r=/05_sailing/documents/body.php

To book a dinghy, kayak or rowing gig go to the ‘club boat summary’ on the ‘Activities’ tab of the website. 👇🏽

https://www.tudorsailing.org.uk/TudorSailing/?r=/05_sailing/club_boats/body.php

If you are rowing on one of the organised rows on Wednesday at 6pm or Saturday 8am, the gigs are already booked out for you, however the seat still needs to be paid for.

To pay for your dinghy, kayak, or gig seat (Cox is free) use web collect. 👇🏽

Friendly Friday Rowing Race

Despite the very challenging conditions last Friday, (with Chimet recording F6 gusting F7 at one stage) the second Friendly Rowing Race evening of the season was enjoyed by all those who took part.

Congratulations to the winning crew of Kyle and Vivienne from Tudor, and Michael from Langstone Cutters, and well done to Michelle who picked up this month’s Viper trophy. But the big prize of the evening which went to Mike Gilbert from the Coastal Rowing Academy, Sarah from Emsworth Slipper and Linda from Tudor, was this months wooden spoon which had been skillfully created with a Venice theme by Jane Dare, see attached photos.

The Tudor Rowers look forward to welcoming anyone who is interested in joining them for the next Friendly Race evening on 28th June.

A few general items to round this Tidal Diamond off.

  • A reminder that the slipway is closed 10- 5 on Saturday for our Open Day.
  • Safety Checks
We’re looking for somebody to carry out monthly safety checks at the club – defibrillator, emergency lighting etc. This is straightforward to do and covers duty hours.
  • Hoist Driver
We’d like to add an additional hoist driver to the team. If you have experience driving/reversing trailers or artic’s etc and would like to be trained to launch and recover cruisers, please get in touch
  • Club Security
As always, please keep gates locked. Always ensure the lights are off and all doors locked when you leave the club.

Social Update

Hi everyone, please do put the following dates in your diary and join us.

As mentioned before, we are looking for more help to ensure we can provide food after as many ‘on the water’ events as possible this summer. It doesn’t have to be onerous, simply organising a ‘bring a board’ or offering to wash up for specific dates will make all the difference. Look out for the ads over the next few weeks with the specific dates we need support.

Friday 31st May

This evening looks to be a busy one with all sections on the water.

We will be serving a ploughman’s supper with the choice of either slow cooked honey roasted gammon or vegetarian lightly spiced samosa. Booking is essential by Thursday lunchtime please to enable us to plan and shop efficiently.

Book here 👇🏽
https://webcollect.org.uk/tudorsc/event/friendly-friday-race-night-may

Thank you in advance to John and Paul for hosting the bar. Jane for the ploughman’s. Dawn and Rafa for serving and washing up.

Friday 7th June

Games Night!!

Bring along board games or card games or simply turn up and join a game. It’s a great way to meet other members. Even if you don’t want to play, come and have a drink. We’ve got a flourishing chess section (who knew you were so cerebral) and we’d love to see more of you. If Uno is more your thing that’s great, we’ve got Uno and Uno flip waiting for you.

Only rule is it’s just for fun. No money to change hands.

The bar will be open, thank you Jamie and Ben.

Feel free to bring your own takeaway or supper or have it delivered.

Saturday 8th June

We’ve got the BBQ ready for our open day. Will be pay on the day. Thank you Paul B in advance.
If you’re a star baker and would like to make a cake or cookies for the day, please get in touch. We could love to showcase, sell, and eat as many delicious goodies as possible.

Friends, family, and colleague can sign up for the open day here for free tasters on the water. 👇🏽
https://webcollect.org.uk/tudorsc/event/discover-sailing-kayaking-rowing-at-tudor-day-1

Friday 14th June

We really need support for this evening if members would like food. Would be great to have a BBQ or some warming chilli for the sunset series 3. Please get in touch if you can support the club.

The Vogalonga 2024

A visit to Venice is an ambition for many people, but having the opportunity to row through its canals and around some of its surrounding islands is a dream that many people can only ever imagine. For a group of Tudor rowers and their three welcome guests, this dream became reality when on the 19th of May four Bursledon Gigs from Tudor Sailing Club joined 2000 other rowing craft from all over the world to row a 22 nautical mile course through the canals of Venice and its surrounding lagoon.

Rowing the Vogalonga is an experience that those who took part will never forget, but the Tudor Tour to Venice provided many more experiences that made this trip so special for everyone involved. For some it was the opportunity to make new friends, for others, it was the amazing Italian food, (and drink of course), or the culture that Venice offers. Most of the group stayed in a couple of Airbnb’s in the beautiful town of Treviso which is just a short trip from Venice.

It is difficult to adequately describe the experience in words but speak to any of the rowers involved and they will happily share their experiences. The following links to video clips and attached photos will also provide a flavour of the trip.

Having attended the Dockyard Port Forum last week there are a couple of items from KHM that may be of interest.

Firstly, watch out for details of activity around the D-Day events that will restrict certain areas at certain times. The link to KHM LNtM is below, but I have noted the following one being published already:

Southsea Flying Display, Saturday 8th June 2024 – https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/khm/portsmouth/local-notices/lntm/2024/2462-southsea-flying-display-sat-8-jun-24

Secondly, there is some repair work necessary on the pile on the western side of Portsmouth Harbour entrance. This will result in the temporary closure of the small boat channel at some point. Watch for the LNtM giving details of when, and you can call Harbour Control on channel 11 or the backup channel 13.

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds always most welcome.

Let’s be careful out there.

Basingstoke Paddle

For a variety of reasons the Basingstoke Paddle didn’t go ahead but we are looking for a new date and Hannah has kindly volunteered to drive the trailer so we should be able to get a few more kayaks transported there.

Breakfast/Brunch Paddle

On Saturday 29th June, come and join a paddle in company to Hayling Island for a cuppa and a bacon roll at the cafe on the beach. It was suggested that the rowers might want to meet us there which sounds like an excellent idea 😁

Opportunities to paddle in company

There are a number of regular events to get people together and paddle or SUP in company. Everyone is really friendly, and supportive and it’s not competitive. You don’t need to be that experienced or fit, it’s just chilled and fun. You can book club kayaks easily.

Monday Evenings

If you would like to paddle in company on a Monday evening come and join us for some chilled time on the water.

Thursday Evenings

Thursdays is a women on the water WOW evening with Hannah so kayaking or sailing, anything on the water basically!

Friendly Fridays

Keep an eye on the calendar for some Friday paddle in company trips on the water. Coming up we have the 31st May and the 14th June.

If anyone has any ideas for a kayaking events or happy to be a point of contact for a paddle in company please let Terri know or just pop something in the Paddlers WhatsApp group.

Gould Trophy

Over the bank holiday 5 club boats took part in the Gould Trophy, racing from Langstone to Lymington and back, and joined by Roger and Moira in Idle Wild. The Gould Trophy is an annual event traditionally held over the May bank holiday weekend, with the outbound leg on the Saturday and back on the Monday, with two nights to take in the sights of Lymington. We would have been 6 but sadly Sheer Magic had a transmission problem prior to the start and was unable to participate.

The sail to Lymington was great! A sunny day, light but not too light winds and a broad reach the entire way with a number of the boats flying their cruising chutes. Pre-dinner drinks in Lymington were aboard Idle Wild – thank you Roger and Moira, followed by a very nice meal at the Kings Arms – another special mention to Helen for organising that.

Sunday included a walk to the Keyhaven Yacht Club for lunch. They’re well worth a visit and are extremely welcoming to visitors.

The return on Monday was a bit greyer and a bit damper – another broad reach, but as the wind had gone from North to South over the weekend I think (and someone can correct me on this) that for the entire weekend the only point of sailing was a reach on the starboard tack! My kind of sailing …..

Thank you to all those involved in the organisation of a great weekend.

Ebb & Flow

Starting on Sunday at 10am from Sandy Point there will be a flotilla of Lifeboats in the Solent to celebrate RNLI 200. More details on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/share/kMrpfp4Gg9vBT6pM/ or to save a visit:

A Flotilla of lifeboats will travel along the coast between Portsmouth, Hayling Island and Selsey, and across to the Isle of Wight, to mark the 200 year anniversary of the RNLI. Hayling Lifeboats will be joined by Selsey’s Shannon, Portsmouth’s Atlantic 85 and D Class (for some of the trip), as well as the Tamar from Bembridge.
The boats will assemble at 10:45 in Fishery Creek, near Hayling Island Sailing Club, departing at 11.00 towards West Pole, and then East along the Witterings beaches towards Selsey. After rounding Selsey Bill and passing Selsey Lifeboat Station, the fleet will turn at Bognor Rocks and head west for the Isle of Wight. After passing Bembridge they will then head North towards Portsmouth and then travel East along Southsea seafront and then along the Hayling shoreline before dispersing.
The fleet of boats will be an awesome sight and will serve as a reminder of the dedication of all the volunteers who have saved 144,277 lives at sea during the last 200 years…. and still counting.
Should any vessels (from Chichester or Langstone Harbour or beyond) wish to join the whole route or any part of it, it would be fantastic to have other boats take part in the celebratory event. The lifeboats will travel at approximately 12 knots and the full circuit will take around three hours.
Bacon rolls, tea and coffee and RNLI 200 souvenirs will be available at Hayling Island Lifeboat station from 10 am, for those who would like to watch the start from the shore. It will be an occasion not to be missed – we look forward to seeing you there!

Friday 17th May

Jacket potatoes with a choice of toppings will be available this Friday after the racing. Booking in advance is essential to assist in catering and to avoid waste. The bar will be open, thank you Anthony and Julian.

Thank you Linda and Les for food service and washing up duty.

https://webcollect.org.uk/tudorsc/event/sunset-series-1-supper

Friday 31st May

This evening looks to be a busy one with all sections on the water.

We will be serving a ploughman’s supper with the choice of either slow cooked honey roasted gammon or vegetarian lightly spiced samosa. It’s not on web collect just yet. We’ll let you know as soon as it is as booking will be essential.

Thank you in advance to John and Paul for hosting the bar. Jane for the ploughman’s. Dawn and Rafa for serving and washing up.

Friday 7th June

Back by popular demand. Games Night.

Hamble River Raid – Veni, vidi, vici

The Tudor Rowers managed a clean sweep at the Hamble River Raid (HRR) last Saturday with the Tudor Crews securing the top three places in the Bursledon class, and the winning trophies in the Ladies and Mixed classes.

As usual for the HRR the sun shone brightly as 29 rowers and coxes travelled the short distance down the M27 to Hamble-le-Rice for the first regatta of the 2024 season. The weather was too hot for rowing, but everyone resisted the temptation of the beer tent before the race and soaked up the atmosphere as the excited crews readied themselves, and their boats.

The course is a real challenge for the coxes, who have to navigate strong tides, many obstacles on the busy Hamble, and the other competitors. And it is a test of stamina for the rowers who have to throw every ounce of energy at the oars, and strain every muscle for nearly an hour of hell with only the thought of the ice cream, beer tent and sheer stubbornness to keep them going.

Congratulations go to the winning crews of:

  • Crazy Daisy – Overall Winner Fastest Bursledon Gig
  • Navigator – Winner Fastest Bursledon – Ladies Crew
  • Friendship – Winner Fastest Bursledon – Mixed Crew
  • Navigator – Winner Fastest Bursledon – Ladies Vets (average crew age)

The next event in the rowing calendar is the Cockleshell Challenge on the 15th June, hosted by Eastney Cruising Association, when Tudor expects the rowers to return with more trophies.

If you would like to try gig rowing, then why not sign up for one of the clubs intro row sessions which are held at 6pm on Tuesday evenings. These free 1hr taster sessions are organised to suit the rower’s ability and are great fun. To book one email me at rowing.

Vogalonga Update

Twenty Tudor rowers are heading for Venice this week to row in the Vogalonga on Sunday 19th May. Four Bursledon Gigs left by ferry this Monday with the majority of the rowers flying out this coming Friday, returning on Wednesday 22nd May. Keep your eyes on Tidal Diamond for photos and a report on how the trip went.

British Canoeing Discover Paddle Award (Kayaks)

Whilst many of us already kayak, it’s worth mentioning the following course that’s available from ASC. Following the same theme as the SUP course above the course aim is encouraging independent decision making on different bodies of water, safety and weather aspects to prepare for self-guided adventures, equipment and skill development.

It will include launching, recovery, self rescue techniques, our own harbour tides and currents, safety and decision making, using whole body techniques, seeking urgent help.

If break time falls on low tide, the added bonus of lunch on sword sands.

The cost is £130 (and 20% Tudor member discount will then be applied)

Next availability is 25th May 9:30-16:30, 22nd June 9:30-16:30, 24th August 9:30-16:30

Booking is via ASC next door.

I don’t know how many people watch Saving Lives at Sea on BBC2, I tend to almost as a way of knowing how things work if I ever get into trouble! I’m a bit behind with this series, but a local NCI station was on a recent episode. Although it’s not about NCI Gosport, it gives a good overview of what NCI does and how it co-operates with other services such as HMCG and RNLI. The episode is available on iPlayer and you can watch it at: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m001yv9s/saving-lives-at-sea-series-9-8-pressure
