Social Update
Hi everyone, please do put the following dates in your diary and join us.
As mentioned before, we are looking for more help to ensure we can provide food after as many ‘on the water’ events as possible this summer. It doesn’t have to be onerous, simply organising a ‘bring a board’ or offering to wash up for specific dates will make all the difference.
Friday 17th May
Jacket potatoes with a choice of toppings will be available this Friday after the racing. Booking in advance is essential to assist in catering and to avoid waste. The bar will be open, thank you Anthony and Julian.
Thank you Linda and Les for food service and washing up duty.

Friday 31st May
This evening looks to be a busy one with all sections on the water.
We will be serving a ploughman’s supper with the choice of either slow cooked honey roasted gammon or vegetarian lightly spiced samosa. It’s not on web collect just yet. We’ll let you know as soon as it is as booking will be essential.
Thank you in advance to John and Paul for hosting the bar. Jane for the ploughman’s. Dawn and Rafa for serving and washing up.
Friday 7th June
Back by popular demand. Games Night.
Bring along board games or card games or simply turn up and join a game. It’s a great way to meet other members. Even if you don’t want to play, come and have a drink. We’ve got a flourishing chess section (who knew you were so cerebral) and we’d love to see more of you. If Uno is more your thing that’s great, we’ve got Uno and Uno flip waiting for you.
Only rule is it’s just for fun. No money to change hands.
The bar will be open, thank you Jamie and Ben.
Feel free to bring your own takeaway or supper or have it delivered.

Hamble River Raid – Veni, vidi, vici
The Tudor Rowers managed a clean sweep at the Hamble River Raid (HRR) last Saturday with the Tudor Crews securing the top three places in the Bursledon class, and the winning trophies in the Ladies and Mixed classes.
As usual for the HRR the sun shone brightly as 29 rowers and coxes travelled the short distance down the M27 to Hamble-le-Rice for the first regatta of the 2024 season. The weather was too hot for rowing, but everyone resisted the temptation of the beer tent before the race and soaked up the atmosphere as the excited crews readied themselves, and their boats.
The course is a real challenge for the coxes, who have to navigate strong tides, many obstacles on the busy Hamble, and the other competitors. And it is a test of stamina for the rowers who have to throw every ounce of energy at the oars, and strain every muscle for nearly an hour of hell with only the thought of the ice cream, beer tent and sheer stubbornness to keep them going.
Congratulations go to the winning crews of:
- Crazy Daisy – Overall Winner Fastest Bursledon Gig
- Navigator – Winner Fastest Bursledon – Ladies Crew
- Friendship – Winner Fastest Bursledon – Mixed Crew
- Navigator – Winner Fastest Bursledon – Ladies Vets (average crew age)
The next event in the rowing calendar is the Cockleshell Challenge on the 15th June, hosted by Eastney Cruising Association, when Tudor expects the rowers to return with more trophies.
If you would like to try gig rowing, then why not sign up for one of the clubs intro row sessions which are held at 6pm on Tuesday evenings. These free 1hr taster sessions are organised to suit the rower’s ability and are great fun. To book one email me at rowing.
Vogalonga Update
Twenty Tudor rowers are heading for Venice this week to row in the Vogalonga on Sunday 19th May. Four Bursledon Gigs left by ferry this Monday with the majority of the rowers flying out this coming Friday, returning on Wednesday 22nd May. Keep your eyes on Tidal Diamond for photos and a report on how the trip went.

British Canoeing Discover Paddle Award (Kayaks)
Whilst many of us already kayak, it’s worth mentioning the following course that’s available from ASC. Following the same theme as the SUP course above the course aim is encouraging independent decision making on different bodies of water, safety and weather aspects to prepare for self-guided adventures, equipment and skill development.
It will include launching, recovery, self rescue techniques, our own harbour tides and currents, safety and decision making, using whole body techniques, seeking urgent help.
If break time falls on low tide, the added bonus of lunch on sword sands.
The cost is £130 (and 20% Tudor member discount will then be applied)
Next availability is 25th May 9:30-16:30, 22nd June 9:30-16:30, 24th August 9:30-16:30
Booking is via ASC next door.

Ebb & Flow
I don’t know how many people watch Saving Lives at Sea on BBC2, I tend to almost as a way of knowing how things work if I ever get into trouble! I’m a bit behind with this series, but a local NCI station was on a recent episode. Although it’s not about NCI Gosport, it gives a good overview of what NCI does and how it co-operates with other services such as HMCG and RNLI. The episode is available on iPlayer and you can watch it at: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m001yv9s/saving-lives-at-sea-series-9-8-pressure
As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds always most welcome.
Let’s be careful out there.
