IRC Rating – all you need to know

As part of the campaign to try and get more people IRC racing a number of experienced yachtsmen including measurers have been asked if they will help local clubs with any questions their members may have. RNSA are very fortunate as Peter Wykeham-Martin is one of the measurers who was approached to help in educating yachtsmen on the new rating system.

We welcome three new Tudor members who were approved at the April executive committee. Anthony Harris, Dean Woodgate and Anthony Robbins and family.

Launch Weekend – Galley Thanks

I am sure everyone involved in the launch weekend would like to join me in thanking the galley volunteers and cake makers for all their hard work and superb food provided over the 3 days. Apparently the Victoria sponge from Jane Francis was a big success! Special thanks to Bill, Dave & Pete ‘The Breakfast Lads’ and also Annelise Hurst, Jan Sobey’s daughter.

The 5th Langstone Harbour Race Weekend is due to be held over the late May bank holiday weekend (Friday 24th May – Monday 27th May 2013). The event will follow a similar format to previous years, however this year, the event will also be hosting the Wanderer Class Association National Championships. We would like to extend a warm welcome to the Wanderer Class and visiting sailors from across the UK.

The online entry system for the event is now live and we would like to encourage all entrants to make use of this facility prior to the event to reduce the amount of admin required on the Friday evening.

Cruiser Update April 2013

The first of the Gales series races is on Friday the 19th for those of you into in – harbour, round the cans races and at the end of the month (Saturday 27th) we have the first of the out of harbour, Forts & Fairway races for those who like more open waters.
With May rapidly approaching, it is time to start thinking about the Gould Trophy passage race to Lymington and back. I will be putting a notice on the cruiser board to get an idea of who is interested in dinner at one of the pubs in town on the Saturday night – if you can add your names soon, I will have a better idea of numbers for booking.

Hopefully the weather will be a be getting a bit better before then to give us late launchers a chance of having the required work done on our boats – the way it has been so far this month, I am not sure even Cinabbar would have gone far yet, so I don’t feel so bad about missing a few weekends on the water.

Cruiser Captain

Calling all electronics engineers!

Our beloved RIB is having temperamental time with its fitted radio and before the club takes the commercial investigation/repair option it was thought to explore in house alternatives.

Do we have an electronics engineer in the club who may be willing to apply some of his/her maintenance hours to investigating (and hopefully fixing) a sporadic fault with the RIB radio? If we do can they contact me on dinghies and we can discuss the problem and how to resolve it. Very many thanks in advance

Phil Bryant
Dinghy Captain.

Friday 19 April 1930 Night Race (Sunset Series 1) High Water 19:05 3.77 metres

Yes dinghy sailing in the dark, how hard can it be? Well the harbour master has issued his notice to mariners and we have the green light (albeit a bit dim) for the race. There are some important safety factors for the entrants to be aware of and these have been entered onto the comments page in the on line club calendar. It can be accessed by clicking on the calendar entry for the day and entering the username and password found in the front of the club handbook (yes, paper at last)

For those like me who are IT averse I’ve copied the details below for the requirements. I believe in past years the glowsticks have been sourced by the club. I’m not aware of that being so this year.

A whistle, a glowstick attached to your buoyancy aid (we may be able to find the dinghy, but life is more important than equipment), a head torch (don’t blind your crew with it!) and finally a torch to play on your sail.

For this event I’m in the patrol boat, without sunglasses, it should be a fun evening so try and make it if you can.

St George’s Day Dinner

RNSA(P) Early Summer Series Race 1

Winter still in full swing for the first race of the season To add insult to injury not only did the coldest winter in memory spill over to the first race of the Early Summer Series but it was miserably wet to boot. Despite all this 8 boats made their way to the Gilkicker start line with the majority being in the first start.

Tractor and Hoist

Please be advised that we have experienced a major fault with the Tractor during its operation today. The clutch has failed, which may also be the Slave Cylinder. Parts have been ordered and the earliest it can be worked on is next Wednesday 17th April. This will obviously have a bearing on how soon boats can be launched. I will provide an update as soon as I have any further information. Everything is being done to speed things up and we are also considering hiring a relief tractor, which would only allow dry launch’s (not dunking the tractor in the oggin !)

Comment facility on the website

Richard and I have implemented a new “comment” facility for sailing events on the website. We think this will be useful to allow people to say thinks like “I’ll be coming to this event” especially for the cruises and “sailing in company” events. To leave a comment, simply click on the event either on the front page of the website or on the main calendar. You will need to log in with the username and password from the printed 2013 calendar (page 3) but if you tick the box “remember me” then you’ll stay logged in all year. Then you’ll be able to see any comments already left for that event and you’ll be able to leave a comment with your name.

Any events which have comments will get a little red “comment” icon next to them on the front page. Comments are only visible to Tudor members.

Note that there is no easy way to remove a comment once left. Also note that we have implemented this as a very “light touch” – no requirement to log in with personal email/password etc but we do log the IP address used to leave each comment.

If you have thoughts or questions on the comment facility please drop me a line to cadetcaptain
