Extension of Fitting Out Period

It was agreed at the last Executive meeting to extend the fitting out period for cruisers and fishing boats to Monday 13th May. This is a “one off”, hopefully not to be repeated, as a result of the prolonged cold weather experienced during the current lay up. If your boat is ready to launch, please do not take unnecessary advantage of this extension as we still have a lot of boats to launch. Please be reminded that “sick boat status” is not granted for work that is part of planned maintenance. Only under exceptional circumstances will sick boat status be granted by for any boats that remaining ashore after the extended deadline.

If you have not already checked your mooring, please make use of the ideal tides this weekend.

East Coast Branch Shake Down Cruise 20/21 April 2014

Members test out the results of fitting out and gather for a social at Harwich Twelve members gathered at Harwich for the Branch shake down cruise. Four residents walked to the meet, 3 drove over and the rest came by sea. Clear blue sky, sun, light airs. The early morning mist soon burnt off. A perfect day to check everything is working as expected.

Tidal Diamond 327 – Hoist Update

Tidal Diamond No. 327

HOIST UPDATE

I am pleased to say that the large tractor is now back in action and connected to the hoist. It has been a busy few days and we even managed to continue launching boats using the small tractor, which is a huge achievement. A big thanks to all involved.

Plymouth Cruising Group

The season begins with a meet in a famous old Pub The Plymouth Cruising Group held a ‘Fitting Out Respite’ dinner in the ‘Who’d have thought it’ pub in Milton Combe this weekend. The event was attended by 17 cruising members and partners and we were fortunate to have a room set aside solely for our use (which allowed Dave Barron-Robinson to provide a debrief on the events to date and an update on the planning for future events).

Portsmouth Cruising Group

Haydn Chappell gives a timely update With the weather now looking much more benign Haydn Chappell, leader of the Portsmouth Cruising Group, has sent out a notice to remind Members what its all about. Aims of the Solent Cruising Group 1. To encourage RNSA sailors (and motor boaters) to meet in congenial surroundings where they can exchange advice and knowledge about small boat work with partners and friends in a social setting.

IRC Rating – all you need to know

As part of the campaign to try and get more people IRC racing a number of experienced yachtsmen including measurers have been asked if they will help local clubs with any questions their members may have. RNSA are very fortunate as Peter Wykeham-Martin is one of the measurers who was approached to help in educating yachtsmen on the new rating system.

RNSA(P) Early Summer Series Race 2

Big wind shift just at start time spoils the best laid plans of the Race Officer In the absence of Kurketrekker (Steve Parry) Electra (Mike Tattersall) once again took on the SOOD responsibility and with a light SE breeze evident mainly in the Eastern Solent set a windward-leeward course to Nth Sturbridge twice round.

Launch Weekend – Galley Thanks

I am sure everyone involved in the launch weekend would like to join me in thanking the galley volunteers and cake makers for all their hard work and superb food provided over the 3 days. Apparently the Victoria sponge from Jane Francis was a big success! Special thanks to Bill, Dave & Pete ‘The Breakfast Lads’ and also Annelise Hurst, Jan Sobey’s daughter.

Cruiser Update April 2013

The first of the Gales series races is on Friday the 19th for those of you into in – harbour, round the cans races and at the end of the month (Saturday 27th) we have the first of the out of harbour, Forts & Fairway races for those who like more open waters.
With May rapidly approaching, it is time to start thinking about the Gould Trophy passage race to Lymington and back. I will be putting a notice on the cruiser board to get an idea of who is interested in dinner at one of the pubs in town on the Saturday night – if you can add your names soon, I will have a better idea of numbers for booking.

Hopefully the weather will be a be getting a bit better before then to give us late launchers a chance of having the required work done on our boats – the way it has been so far this month, I am not sure even Cinabbar would have gone far yet, so I don’t feel so bad about missing a few weekends on the water.

Roger Smith,
Cruiser Captain

Calling all electronics engineers!

Our beloved RIB is having temperamental time with its fitted radio and before the club takes the commercial investigation/repair option it was thought to explore in house alternatives.

Do we have an electronics engineer in the club who may be willing to apply some of his/her maintenance hours to investigating (and hopefully fixing) a sporadic fault with the RIB radio? If we do can they contact me on dinghies and we can discuss the problem and how to resolve it. Very many thanks in advance

Phil Bryant
Dinghy Captain.

Friday 19 April 1930 Night Race (Sunset Series 1) High Water 19:05 3.77 metres

Yes dinghy sailing in the dark, how hard can it be? Well the harbour master has issued his notice to mariners and we have the green light (albeit a bit dim) for the race. There are some important safety factors for the entrants to be aware of and these have been entered onto the comments page in the on line club calendar. It can be accessed by clicking on the calendar entry for the day and entering the username and password found in the front of the club handbook (yes, paper at last)

For those like me who are IT averse I’ve copied the details below for the requirements. I believe in past years the glowsticks have been sourced by the club. I’m not aware of that being so this year.

A whistle, a glowstick attached to your buoyancy aid (we may be able to find the dinghy, but life is more important than equipment), a head torch (don’t blind your crew with it!) and finally a torch to play on your sail.

For this event I’m in the patrol boat, without sunglasses, it should be a fun evening so try and make it if you can.
