RNSA (P) Autumn Series – Race 4

"I can't believe I am sailing in shorts and a tee shirt on an evening more than midway through September" was a comment overheard last night following the fourth race of the Autumn Series and indeed it was a cracking evening for a sail. The SOOD, Spirit of Kudu also thought so, setting a course that ensured even the fastest boats finished under navigation lights and the slowest missing their supper! With a 2.

Car Parking in Compound

This Friday, 19th September, a new boat ‘Basil’ is being delivered into the compound from a low loader and ‘Blue Dragon’ is being moved from the compound onto a low loader. With this in mind, could all members please refrain from parking in the compound on Friday 19th and be very careful where else they park that day.

Many thanks,

Bart’s Bash

Tudor is tantalisingly close to having enough entrants for our race to count towards the Guinness World Record attempt. We have 23 dinghies registered to date and need a minimum of 25 to sail on the day for our race to count. Please register now and make sure Tudor is part of the world record.

As a reminder, the Bart’s Bash dinghy race is 11am on Sunday 21st of September sailing from the Tudor start line, with cruisers able to join the ECA race at their start line, also at 11am. The Bart’s Bash dinghy race will be a simple triangular course, will be of less than 30 minutes duration and may be sailed by cadets subject to weather conditions on the day. To meet the Guinness World Record requirements, competitors should be aware we will be taking still and video photography during the event. There will also be a collection for the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation. There is no race entry fee but competitors (or their parents) are asked to make a small cash donation.

As the Bart’s Bash race is of short duration, I will be happy to run a 2nd race on the day, subject to demand.

Online registration will be open until end of day Friday on the Bart’s Bash website at http://www.bartsbash.co.uk/club/tudor-sailing-club

You may also sign on at the club on the day in the normal way.

Please support your club.

Deadline for the next issue of Ebb & Flow – Friday, 26 September 2014.

Get into print!

If you are thinking that the weather may mean that your sailing activities are almost over for the summer, why not start telling the rest of us all about them. As usual, we need your input to make the next Ebb and Flow interesting so please let us know all about your summer sailing adventures and activities. If you are writing an article (and please do), a few photos if you have them help to make it even more interesting (and make it easier to adjust it to fit in the space available).

We can all learn from the nautical experiences of others so let’s hear about your sailing successes and failures – don’t be embarrassed, pseudonyms can be used if you prefer! If you’ve been cruising or racing, why not let us have some information on your tips and or trips, race training ideas, where you’ve been, what you’ve seen, what you’ve eaten when you got there (whether France or Hayling Island). What about writing an article on your favourite type of dinghy or cruiser, practical boating advice or cooking in confined quarters – all contributions gratefully received.

Other ideas for articles: what made you want to get afloat in the first place, what was your first sailing experience; what was your worst (and/or best) sailing experience; what boat would you like to own and why; sailing trivia; most useful piece of kit; book reviews; your favourite nautical film or poem?

Sailing stories, cartoons or photos are all welcome? Don’t be shy, start to write – it’s not that difficult. It’s a bit like sailing in fact – once you’ve pushed off, you’ll soon by under way!

If you have an idea, please get in touch and send your contributions to ebbnflow

Boarding Ladders in Workshop

There a few small (non TSC) ladders in the Club workshop, probably saved for you after cruiser launching this year. If one of them is yours please claim it soon (30 days), after that it is destruction and disposal. Space is at a premium in the workshop presently and ongoing works.

RNSA (P) Autumn Series – Race 3

This is what autumn is about - 12-15 knots of wind, 10 yachts racing and a cracking sunset as a finale. Race 3 of the RNSA(P) autumn series had it all. Jolly Jack Tar the SOOD had a quorum of navy team sailors but not quite enough crew to sort the corners out swiftly and take charge at the same time.

Bart’s Bash

Sunday 21st September is the date, 11am is the time, and Tudor Sailing Club is one of 689 global venues participating in Bart’s Bash. Bart’s Bash is a global sailing race and fund raising event organised by the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation charity. Bart’s Bash will be joining together thousands of worldwide sailors in a race to set a new Guinness World Record, raise money for charity, inspire the next generation and remember Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson, Gold & Silver Olympic medallist and America’s Cup sailor.

For Tudor’s race to count towards the Guinness World Record, we need to have 25 or more dinghies on the water. The race will be an easy, short race from a club line start, suitable for everyone, including cadets. You can sign on online in advance of the race, or sign on at the club on the day. Please come and support the event.

The race start time is 11am. Dinghies will start from Tudor’s club line and cruisers may join the Bart’s Bash race at Eastney Cruising Association starting at 11am on ECA’s club line. At 2:30 pm there will be a social event at ECA with a BBQ and band (http://www.limiteds.co.uk/). The social event is open to all race participants and organisers. There is no entry fee but there will be a cash charity collection at the race and at the social event.

For more information on Bart’s Bash see http://www.bartsbash.co.uk/

To sign up for Tudor’s dinghy race, please enter your details here: http://www.bartsbash.co.uk/club/tudor-sailing-club
To sign up for ECA’s cruiser race, please enter your details here: http://www.bartsbash.co.uk/club/eastney-cruising-association

Additionally, we need 2 independent witnesses to verify that our race meets Guinness World Record requirements. Witnesses cannot be club members nor can they be family of race participants / organisers.

To make this race a success I need your help:
1. Sign up for the race using the above links.
2. Identify a friend or colleague who would be prepared to witness our attempt – they will need to be at the club for around 3 hours on Sunday 21st September, arriving around 10am. If you are a (non family) member who is not sailing the Tudor race, would your spouse / partner be willing to do this? Please provide names and contact details to me to follow up.

Sailing Committee – Section Captains

Phil Bryant, Roger Smith and Rob Nicholson have provided excellent service (respectively) as Captains of the dinghy, cruiser and cadet fleets, and I am delighted that all 3 have put their names forward as candidates for 2015. These three positions are elected positions, so I therefore invite anyone else who wishes to stand for one or more of these posts to let me know by the end of September. Details of the roles can be found via the following link: http://www.tudorsailing.org.uk/TudorSailing/05_sailing/documents/upload/Sailing%20committee%20job%20descriptions%202014.pdf

If additional candidates do come forward, the election of dinghy and cadet captains will take place during the dinghy section meeting following compound reorganisation, and the election of cruiser captain during the main lift in weekend.

Tudor Summer Ball

I would just like to say a big thank you to Steve Francis, the Social Committee, Jan Sobey, the bar staff and all others who helped to make the first Summer Ball a great evening. We had a great band (Ok, I admit I suggested them), great food, great company, great entertainment (thanks Mark Tranter for the dancing).
