Get into print!

Summers coming please tell me that it is lets hope that the air and water warms up for a great sailing season on, rather than in, the balmy waters of Langstone Harbour and the Solent and maybe further afield or should that be afloat or adrift? Anyway, enough of that, another edition of Ebb & Flow is coming over the horizon, or it will be once it has cast off with a full cargo of articles, news, events, and contributions from eager Tudor members. So, before you are spending all your spare time out on the briny why not write an article for the club newsletter?

We need your input to make the next Ebb and Flow interesting so please let us know all about your summer plans. If you are writing an article (and please do), a few photos if you have them help to make it even more interesting (and make it easier to adjust it to fit in the space available).

We can all learn from the nautical experiences of others so let’s hear about your sailing successes and failures don’t be embarrassed, pseudonyms can be used if you prefer! If youve been cruising or racing, why not let us have some information on your tips and or trips, race training ideas, where youve been, what youve seen, what youve eaten when you got there (whether France or Hayling Island). What about writing an article on a particular type of dinghy or cruiser, practical boating advice or cooking in confined quarters all contributions gratefully received.

Other ideas for articles: what made you want to get afloat in the first place, what was your first sailing experience; what was your worst (and/or best) sailing experience; what boat would you like to own and why; sailing trivia; most useful piece of kit; book reviews; your favourite nautical film or poem?

Sailing stories, cartoons or photos are all welcome? Don’t be shy, start to write its not that difficult. Its a bit like sailing in fact once youve pushed off, youll soon by underway!

If you have an idea, please get in touch. Send your contributions to ebbnflow

Disclaimer of liability

Rule 4 of the Racing Rules of Sailing states: “The responsibility for a boat’s decision to participate in a race or to continue racing is hers alone.”

Sailing is by its nature an unpredictable sport and therefore involves an element of risk. By taking part in the event, each competitor agrees and acknowledges that:

  1. a) They are aware of the inherent element of risk involved in the sport and accept responsibility for the exposure of themselves, their crew and their boat to such inherent risk whilst taking part in the event;
  2. They are responsible for the safety of themselves, their crew, their boat and their other property whether afloat or ashore;
  3. They accept responsibility for any injury, damage or loss to the extent caused by their own actions or omissions;
  4. Their boat is in good order, equipped to sail in the event and they are fit to participate;
  5. The provision of a race management team, patrol boats, umpires and other officials and volunteers by the organiser does not relieve them of their own responsibilities;
  6. The provision of patrol boat cover is limited to such assistance, particularly in extreme weather conditions, as can be practically provided in the circumstances.

Summer Series 1/2 Saturday 6th June

There is an error in the Tudor calendar, in which it states Summer Series 1/2 is also the Chris Wadham race. The Chris Wadham race will actually take place in August, further details will be made available nearer the time. Summer 1/2 is a normal Saturday average lap / Grand Prix style event, with 2 short races from a Tudor committee boat start.

High Water Cruise 23rd May

OK, the wind could have blown a little harder but all in all most dinghies sailed the majority of the way. Eleven boats carrying 19 members, including 1 new member and 2 Cadets, set out from Tudor around 14:30. Only two of out party had never been through the Binness Channel.

Boats:- 3 Gulls, 3 Wayfarers, 2 Visions, 1 Laser, 1 Lightning, 1 Kestrel.

We went down to Broom buoy and turned East cutting off the corner to find the channel from Russels Lake then North to Oyster Island. Passing Oyster to Port we headed for the South end of the Binness Channel and went through here with the wind basically behind us.

We picked up a bit of speed down to the East end of Long Island and stopped there for a while. We were joined here by another member in a Laser. As usual we cleared the beach of rubbish (4 bags), we had the normal cans and plastic bottles but I also found some pills still looking fairly OK in a blister pack. Moira suggested they looked like Viagra!

Interesting! By this time it was just about high tide. There was little wind and with the tide ebbing we decided to take a short cut back to the club. We sailed down the South side of Long Island back to Oyster. There was still enough water to go from Oyster almost straight across to the club, although the wind was dropping even more so some used their engine and other young, fit members paddled for a while. A little more wind carried us home.

A lovely sail. Thanks to all who came along. Thanks to Alan and Kevin for driving the Patrol boat.
