HSSC RNSA Autumn Series Race 3 Results

The WERE no results! From Ric Hanslip: Folks, Some wag once quipped, “What are the two most useless things you can take on a racing yacht?” To which the answer supplied was “An umbrella and a naval officer” I make no further comment on the attached photo. Jesting aside, what a shame the weather gods couldn’t find it in themselves to provide even the briefest support for the best turnout of the Autumn Series so far.

High Water Cruise

For this Sundays High water cruise to go ahead we Ideally need a patrol boat helm and crew. If you are trained up please volunteer via Dutyman. if there is no patrol boat crew then the cruise will go ahead but will have no patrol boat cover.

High Water Dinghy Cruise

This Sunday afternoon we have another dinghy cruise in company. The outing will most likely be around the north-eastern part of the harbour and include some (but not all) of the following: passage through the North Binness channel, passage through the Binness Islands, landing on Long Island (bring a drink and biscuits), a stop at ‘Stoke beach’ on Hayling Island (where an ice-cream could be purchased if you come prepared). The actual itinerary will of course depend on the conditions on the day, in particular the ice-cream landing requires a wind direction with plenty of east in it (and some sun, ideally). If you are unfamiliar with this part of the harbour then have a look at Chart – Whole Harbour on the website under Members/Useful Documents. High water is at 4. Please be dressed and semi-rigged before a briefing at 1.45 on the club patio, after which we will all then finish rigging and launch, ready to set sail as a group around 2.30pm.

Wayfarer 4451, Sanderling

Bart’s Bash

This year we have been invited by the Portsmouth Andrew Simpson Centre to take part in their Bart’s Bash race on 11th September. This will be instead of the club hosting its own Bart’s Bash race. There will be a racing briefing at 13:30 at the Andrew Simpson Centre which you are encouraged to attend to find out about how the race will be run. This is followed by launching at 14:00 with the race starting at 14:30 until approximately 15:30. To enter please drop me an email as well as booking a race entry at the following link: https://asportsmouth.checkfront.co.uk/reserve/?category_id=39 The £5 entry fee is your donation for the Andrew Simpson Foundation. If you are using your own boat you do not need RYA level 2.

The Portsmouth Andrew Simpson Centre will also be hosting some taster sessions during the day if racing does not take your fancy. Which can be booked at the same link.

For the Barts bash event we would like to support ASWC by sending a patrol boat to cover our members. For this to happen we still need patrol boat helm and crew.

Tudor Rowers Show Their Mettle

The 10th annual Round Hayling Rowing Race took place last Sunday with Tudor Rowers setting the pace.

Unlike previous years, there were almost perfect conditions this year, although the sun and heat made the 13 nautical mile course a real test of the rowers mettle.

Due to the handicap system the Bursledon Gigs were the first to leave the start, with Rosie, Trypp Hazard, Navigator and Freedom setting the pace for the 24 boat fleet to follow.

The first half of the race saw the Freedom Crew battling with their nemesis, the Elephant Boatyard for first place, with sometimes only a few feet between the two boats, as the coxes jostled to gain the best of the tide. Unfortunately in the end the Elephant gained the upper hand, and with the benefit of an extra rower they managed to hold their lead.

In the end it was a real hard fought race with the Tudor boats finally finishing in 3rd, 4th, 12th and 15th overall, with the Freedom Crew winning 1st place and Navigator crew 2nd place in the veterans 50+ category.

A big well done to all the Tudor rowers and supporters for such a great effort.

Waiting for the Tide

Defra is updating the UK Marine Strategy Part Three: Programme of Measures and seeking views. That titles sounds a bit heavy going, but “The consultation, open until 29 Nov, is aimed at all groups and individuals who use the sea. Help us achieve our vision for a healthy ocean“. If you are interested in finding out more visit: https://consult.defra.gov.uk/uk-marine-strategy-programme-of-measures-3/uk-marine-strategy-part-3/

For any RYA members I will add that the RYA South Region AGM is on the 30th October. RYA members should have had an email with details, but if you haven’t feel free to drop me an email.

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Let’s be careful out there.

Maintenance Jobs

A new section for the Tidal Diamond where you can check for opportunities to tick off those maintenance hours. Just announcing the feature this week, but watch this space in future Tidal Diamonds. In the mean time see Dutyman for opportunities to help out with the social and sailing events.

I’m sure there will be some stuff here soon, but in the mean time I thought some links to other club duties that can cover maintenance hours would be worth adding (possibly moving to the Useful Links section later).

Rowing at the Regatta

Hi everyone..

As you know on the 4th and 5th September Tudor will be hosting its annual regatta. As part of the fun we will be holding our monthly informal rowing race on the afternoon of Saturday 4th. We plan to start racing around 2pm. (Arrive at club house for course briefing by 1.40 pm please). This should allow time for those participating in sailing to get back, de-rig, and join us. The racing will be from the club line and will have a slightly shorter route than previous months. John will brief everyone on the day. As always strictly informal and fun. No wooden spoon just our beautiful trophy. It would be fabulous to see as many of you there as possible even if you’re not a rower. Teams are randomly drawn. Any questions, as always, just get in touch with me.

It’s Coming Home

Congratulations!!!

Last Saturday…28th August the rowing section entered 5 gigs in the Hamble Regatta, (pictures attached). The main trophy is the “Boatyard Sheave” given for the fastest boat round the 4 mile course and I’m delighted to share that it now resides in our club cabinet won by boat “Freedom” crewed by Ian, Sandy, John and Glen, and Nina as cox. We also took the top ladies “Rose Bowl” trophy in “Friendship” crewed by Sue, Jane, Denise, Penny and Alison as cox and a third trophy was only missed by some “as yet unexplained” technical decision.

These races are very close run affairs, with just 12 seconds between first and second after 20 minutes of racing. In the past we have lost by just 6 seconds after 45 minutes of hard rowing so the crews have to pull all the stops out right to the line to be in contention.

The conditions were perfect for hard rowing, no sun with a light breeze and flat water. As the Hamble is a highly congested and relatively narrow river it is a timed affair with crews started in pairs at one minute intervals to reduce the chance of “unseemly” clashes at the turns. From a rowers perspective this is not ideal as it is best to be able to “see” ones main competitors but this “ignorance of position” while racing certainly adds to the apprehension and fires up the adrenaline just as much as if the blighters were alongside.

The Hamble folk are an extremely friendly bunch making us feel very much at home, a great day amongst great people.

Pictures are attached and there is some great GoPro footage on YouTube if you search TSC Rowers Racing River Hamble 1, 2, and 3. Here’s one of the links:

Waiting for the Tide

A couple of QHM notices of note this week. There’s a danger mark off Seaview reported missing from station. Details at: https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/QHM/Portsmouth/Local-Notices/Navigational-Warnings/2021/2162

There’s also Gosport Marine Festival on 4th September, although no doubt with the Tudor Regatta on there won’t be any members in the vicinity ? Details at: https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/QHM/Portsmouth/Local-Notices/LNTM/2021/2162-GOSPORT-MARINE-FESTIVAL-4-SEPT-21

As a quick aside, do make use of the links below for the full set of LNtM for Langstone, Chichester and Portsmouth. I don’t add an exhaustive list of them, just some that may be of particular interest.

I will also note that the regatta sailing instructions and a couple of posters are attached.

HSSC RNSA Autumn Series Race 1 Results

From Mike Shrives. High Pressure, blue skies, calm waters and a variable North Easterly meant lovely conditions for the Autumn Series race one. Unsurprisingly as Summer leave is still uppermost in some participants itineraries the turn out was a little low on numbers but six yachts awaited the Race Officer to let the show begin.
