Membership Renewals
This is a final call for all members to complete their 2017 membership renewal. Payment is due no later than 28th February.
Membership renewals are being handled through our membership system, Webcollect. You will have received an individual renewal reminder email which includes a link to the Webcollect website, with a password renewal link if you haven’t previously logged in. Please log in to the system and go to your subscriptions and click “renew” against all items you wish to renew – your membership and capital levy, plus any boats you intend to keep at the club this year. You have the option of paying by bank transfer, cheque, PayPal or GoCardless Direct Debit. If you select bank transfer or cheque, you will receive an email giving you information on how to make payment. If you have chosen to pay by bank transfer, you will need to go to your bank’s internet or telephone banking service to set up the payment to Tudor Sailing Club’s bank account using the information from the email. Cheques will need to be posted to the Treasurer at the address shown on the email. If you select Paypal or GoCardless Direct Debit, the system will take you through the steps to set up the payment directly.
If you have not completed 15 hours of club duty in the 2016 membership year, a separate order will have been created for the duty levy owed, which will also need to be paid.
In case you are not sure what to do, please refer to the guide which can be found in the member’s area of the club website at this link – http://www.tudorsailing.org.uk/TudorSailing/04_membersecure/Exec_Documents/Upload/Renewals.pdf
Per Club Bye-laws paragraph 6(d)): “Members who have not paid their annual subscription by 1st March will be resigned automatically and must re-apply for membership as for new members. This penalty involves the forfeiture of mooring and compound space and the payment of the current joining fee.” Accordingly, please make sure you make payment for all aspects of your membership (including 2016 duty levy, if owed). Even if you think you have completed your renewals, please check Webcollect to make sure you do not have outstanding orders to settle. Your membership renewal is not viewed as complete until all items are fully paid up.
If you need help with any of this, please contact Janice (Treasurer) or Paul (Secretary)

Cruiser Re-launch
Please note that whilst the role of bosun remains unfilled the cruiser relaunch is at risk of not going ahead. The bosun is an essential role that is pivotal in the smooth running of the weekend and is the person who takes charge and leads the weekend. I will give an update on the cruiser relaunch situation in next week’s TD.

Get into Print!
Spring is here, so as you emerge blinking into longer (and hopefully warmer) days why not start thinking about your sailing plans for next year. And why not put pen to paper – or fingers to keyboard – and write that contribution for the next issue of Ebb & Flow. You know, the one that you’ve been meaning to do for the past few issues. It’s not difficult, I’m sure that you have some sailing story that you’d like to share with club members. Don’t be shy – we need your input to make the next Ebb and Flow interesting so please get in touch – anything sailing (or vaguely) sailing-related is welcome. Cadets and new members are encouraged to contribute as well as those who are in for the long haul!
Now there’s an idea – I wonder whether “the long haul” is a sailing phrase; an article on sailing expressions in general use could be interesting. But don’t weigh anchor there, if you have an ideas, please get in touch and send your contributions to the email address below.

Gig Rowing
This coming Saturday 25th February the Gig will be on the water for an Easy Rowing session at 1000hrs.
For members who would like to have a go at some “Easy Rowing”. These sessions are open to all club members and will only last approx. 30 minutes on the water. They are for a bit of nautical fun. Kit needed: A buoyancy aid of some sort, wet boots or wellies, gloves and a windcheater over some layers.
If possible let me know by email if you are “in” but if you cannot decide until the day, just turn up and I am sure we will fit you in.

Oarsome Obstacle Course at PlayZone
PSTT entered 15 of their young people into a competitive indoor rowing challenge, hosted by Oarsome Chance and PlayZone Cosham on Wednesday 15th February. The PSTT team were competing against teams from King Richard’s school in Paulsgrove and Wecock Farm in Waterlooville.
Each team had two Concept 2 rowing machines and they had to complete 20 minutes of rowing, with each person rowing for no more than 2 minutes. After each person had their turn at rowing, they had to complete the obstacle course, which went up the stairs, down the rainbow slide, through the rope walk ways, down the pads, back up the stairs and either to the very steep red slide or the slightly less-scary blue slide. The winning team was determined by the total of metres rowed in 20 minutes on both of their rowing machines.
The challenge was very active and physically demanding and by the end of the evening, everyone was exhausted. Despite coming second to the team from King Richard’s school, our team left with smiles on their faces and ready for a rematch!

Laura’s Yacht Delivery: Majorca – Gran Canaria
In October/November 2016 I was lucky enough to crew on the delivery of an Oyster 625 (62ft sailing yacht) called “Black Lion” from Palma, Majorca to Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, stopping at Gibraltar on the way. In total there were 5 people on the boat including myself, the skipper, Rory, and three other crew; Adrian, Ralph and Ed. We slipped lines from Palma on 3rd November and began to head South West through the Mediterranean towards Gibraltar, carrying out a watch system of 3 hours on and 4.5 hours off. The wind was just off our bow which meant we spent most part of the journey motor sailing, although there were no complaints as the sun was out and there were plenty of dolphins along the way.
After 3 days, we arrived in Gibraltar and stayed for a day to carry out repairs and maintenance, to stock up on our food and drink, and see the rock of Gibraltar, its monkeys, and some incredible views of Spain and Africa. The following morning, we began the second leg of the delivery, leaving the straights of Gibraltar to sail in the Atlantic towards the Canaries. At this point the wind was behind us so we were able to set up the boat to goose-wing and use the engine less. The clear sky and stars whilst night sailing, dolphins every day, beautiful sun rises and sun sets made this an incredible experience for us all.
After 4 1/2 days, we arrived in Las Palmas and I stayed for a couple more days to carry out more maintenance and prepare the boat to participate in the ARC (Atlantic Ralley Crossing) with 250 other boats from around the world. I then flew back home on 14th November.
I had an amazing experience and had completed a total of 1,250 nautical miles, which will help me achieve more sailing qualifications including RYA Yachtmaster Offshore and Ocean, and to complete more yacht deliveries in the future.

Maintenance Duties
Get your maintenance hours off to a good start by supporting the Langstone Harbour Race Weekend
The Langstone Harbour Race weekend is due to take place on the 27 – 29th May and is our largest annual event which is regularly attended by 60+ dinghies. As ever, there is plenty to be done to help organise and run this event smoothly so we would love to gather a list of volunteers to help. Some jobs will take no more than an hour, others may take several. Following is an example of some of the roles we need to fill:
- Man the registration desk for 2 – 3 hours on Friday 26th May (hint: the bar is open!)
- Man the registration desk for 1.5 hours before race start each day
- Shorebased coordinator in Tudor Race box to coordinate launching, retirements and recovery of dinghies and patrol boats and to process race results. (Sailwave training can be provided)
- Help in the galley with breakfast each morning
There will be plenty of other roles but if you would like to be considered for some of these jobs, please let me know.

If you require bar training or a refresher please contact me by email and I’ll arrange to align with your first duty.
