Oarsome Obstacle Course at PlayZone
PSTT entered 15 of their young people into a competitive indoor rowing challenge, hosted by Oarsome Chance and PlayZone Cosham on Wednesday 15th February. The PSTT team were competing against teams from King Richard’s school in Paulsgrove and Wecock Farm in Waterlooville.
Each team had two Concept 2 rowing machines and they had to complete 20 minutes of rowing, with each person rowing for no more than 2 minutes. After each person had their turn at rowing, they had to complete the obstacle course, which went up the stairs, down the rainbow slide, through the rope walk ways, down the pads, back up the stairs and either to the very steep red slide or the slightly less-scary blue slide. The winning team was determined by the total of metres rowed in 20 minutes on both of their rowing machines.
The challenge was very active and physically demanding and by the end of the evening, everyone was exhausted. Despite coming second to the team from King Richard’s school, our team left with smiles on their faces and ready for a rematch!

Laura’s Yacht Delivery: Majorca – Gran Canaria
In October/November 2016 I was lucky enough to crew on the delivery of an Oyster 625 (62ft sailing yacht) called “Black Lion” from Palma, Majorca to Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, stopping at Gibraltar on the way. In total there were 5 people on the boat including myself, the skipper, Rory, and three other crew; Adrian, Ralph and Ed. We slipped lines from Palma on 3rd November and began to head South West through the Mediterranean towards Gibraltar, carrying out a watch system of 3 hours on and 4.5 hours off. The wind was just off our bow which meant we spent most part of the journey motor sailing, although there were no complaints as the sun was out and there were plenty of dolphins along the way.
After 3 days, we arrived in Gibraltar and stayed for a day to carry out repairs and maintenance, to stock up on our food and drink, and see the rock of Gibraltar, its monkeys, and some incredible views of Spain and Africa. The following morning, we began the second leg of the delivery, leaving the straights of Gibraltar to sail in the Atlantic towards the Canaries. At this point the wind was behind us so we were able to set up the boat to goose-wing and use the engine less. The clear sky and stars whilst night sailing, dolphins every day, beautiful sun rises and sun sets made this an incredible experience for us all.
After 4 1/2 days, we arrived in Las Palmas and I stayed for a couple more days to carry out more maintenance and prepare the boat to participate in the ARC (Atlantic Ralley Crossing) with 250 other boats from around the world. I then flew back home on 14th November.
I had an amazing experience and had completed a total of 1,250 nautical miles, which will help me achieve more sailing qualifications including RYA Yachtmaster Offshore and Ocean, and to complete more yacht deliveries in the future.

Maintenance Duties
Get your maintenance hours off to a good start by supporting the Langstone Harbour Race Weekend
The Langstone Harbour Race weekend is due to take place on the 27 – 29th May and is our largest annual event which is regularly attended by 60+ dinghies. As ever, there is plenty to be done to help organise and run this event smoothly so we would love to gather a list of volunteers to help. Some jobs will take no more than an hour, others may take several. Following is an example of some of the roles we need to fill:
- Man the registration desk for 2 – 3 hours on Friday 26th May (hint: the bar is open!)
- Man the registration desk for 1.5 hours before race start each day
- Shorebased coordinator in Tudor Race box to coordinate launching, retirements and recovery of dinghies and patrol boats and to process race results. (Sailwave training can be provided)
- Help in the galley with breakfast each morning
There will be plenty of other roles but if you would like to be considered for some of these jobs, please let me know.

If you require bar training or a refresher please contact me by email and I’ll arrange to align with your first duty.

Gig Rowing
This coming Saturday 18th February the Gig will be on the water for an Easy Rowing session at 1000hrs.
For members who would like to have a go at some “Easy Rowing”. These sessions are open to all club members and will only last approx. 30 minutes on the water. They are for a bit of nautical fun. Kit needed: A buoyancy aid of some sort, wet boots or wellies, gloves and a windcheater over some layers.
If possible let me know by email if you are “in” but if you cannot decide until the day, just turn up and I am sure we will fit you in.
