Tidal Diamond No. 573
Wednesday Evening Mudlark/Cadet Sessions
Last week saw us getting our juniors on the water for the first time and the wind calmed down during the session to give us a perfect first session on the water. Thanks to everyone for helping to get everyone rigged and on (and off) the water. We will get quicker over the coming weeks and it would be much appreciated if a few more parents could come down equipped to help launch and recover. If you are willing to go knee deep, that would be great. However if you only want to stick a pair of wellies on, this is still really helpful as you can be a valuable support to the ‘launchers’ as you can shuttle empty trolleys to and from them, allowing them to stay in the water launching or recovering.
Given that the weather continues to be typically British and a bit unpredictable, please make sure that all juniors have suitable wetsuit and spray tops. Whilst it may feel ok on the slip when launching with the sun on your back, by the time they have got wet and the sun has gone down or behind a cloud, the kids can get cold very quickly. Whilst we don’t want to appear to be overtly H&S driven, both Steve and Millie have huge experience of working with youngsters so have a pretty well tuned judgement for what is appropriate and, as such the Mudlark team have the full support of the Sailing Committee to refuse to allow juniors to go afloat if they are not considered to be dressed appropriately. We hope you will can respect their decision at the time if they are forced to make it.
Also, parental help getting the junior’s boats rigged is essential in making sure we hit decent timings. If you are new to sailing and are not sure how to rig your childs boat, please ask as there are plenty of experienced sailors around who will be willing to help you out with the rigging process.
Please mudlark responsibly
Having made a comment above about Health and Safety, I have to say that one of the things I love to see at the club is kids having fun at the bottom of the slip, playing in the water and in the mud at low tide. In a world overly conscious of H&S, it’s great to see kids having the opportunity to dice appropriately with an element of risk. However, there are times when it is appropriate to reel them in such as when dinghies and tenders are being launched or recovered or are in the general vicinity. At these times, not only is there more risk to the kids but, to be honest, they just stand a good chance of getting in the way of other members who might not be quite so amused by mudlarking kids! Therefore, please can parents of mudlarks recognise that they should still be in ‘responsible parent’ mode and ensure that mudlarking is carried out responsibly!!! If boats are being launched or recovered, the only people on the slip should be those people helping out with the process. It goes without saying that anyone going in or near the water needs to be wearing a buoyancy aid.

Langstone Harbour Race Weekend shore based coordinator
27th – 29th May is the LHRW which is our biggest racing event in the calendar. We still require someone to play the role of shore based coordinator. You could do this for just one day or all three days if you can. You will be required to man the radio at the club during the racing to communicate with the Race Officer and Patrol Boats about numbers of boats launched and then ensuring that everyone makes it home after racing. You may also get involved in helping out with recording some results (no special training required for this!). If you would like to take on this role for one or more days of the race weekend, please let me know.

The Spring Cruise will head for Newport on the Saturday. HW is 13:09 4.9m and you need to get to Newport no later than 2 hours after HW. Due to other commitments (a band gig) I will join the cruise on the Sunday. The plan is then as follows:
- Monday optional bus trip and BBQ in the evening.
- Tuesday afternoon, sail to Beaulieu, moor at either Bucklers Hard Marina or on the cheaper mid-river pontoons according to individual preference.
- Wednesday optional walk to Beaulieu village.
- Thursday sail to Newtown Creek and moor on the National Trust moorings (or anchor if you want the cheaper option).
- Friday sail to Fareham Creek and the Fareham Sailing and Motor Boat Club and moor on their visitor’s pontoon.
- Saturday optional walk.
- Sunday sail back to Langstone Harbour.
