Langstone Sailing Club Regatta

Langstone Sailing Club are holding their annual regatta this weekend (which also contributes to this year’s Interclub series). Therefore it would be great to see some more Tudor sailors making it across the harbour.

Racing starts at midday on both days but please bear in mind that you have a significant sail to the start line so you need to give yourselves plenty of time to make it across the harbour for the racing. A Tudor Patrol Boat will be attending the regatta so will be able to shepherd dinghies to and from the sailing area.

Full details of the regatta can be found via this link Regatta and Prentice Plate documents.

Gig Rowing

This coming Saturday, 10th June, the Gig will be on the water for an Easy Rowing session at 1000hrs. These sessions are open to all club members and will only last approx. 30 minutes on the water. They are for a bit of nautical fun. Kit needed: A buoyancy aid of some sort, wet boots or wellies, gloves and a windcheater over some layers.

Any members who have tried the Gig and would like to engage in a regular weekly row please email me and I will put your name on our core regulars email group.

Patrol Boat Helm Required

Unfortunately, we are short of a helm for Sunday. This is providing cover at the Langstone Sailing Club regatta so it is important that we demonstrate our support of the other clubs we share the harbour with. If anyone is able to pick up this duty, please assign yourself on Dutyman or email duties.

Tudor Patrol Boat Training

Please be advised that we will be running some more training courses for those wishing to crew or helm on Tudor Patrol Boats.

Steve Skinner has offered the following Friday dates:

  • 7th July – NOTE 7:00pm start
  • 21st July – 6:30pm start

If you would like to be trained, please send me an email letting me know which date (or ideally dates) you can manage and whether you are applying for Level 1 or Level 2 training. Dutyman Coordinator Required

The Sailing Committee would like to invite someone, ideally from the dinghy community, to act as our Dutyman coordinator. This person will monitor the process of releasing the second half of the sailing calendar onto Dutyman (with training and guidance from members of the committee) and then ensuring that the sailing calendar is resourced through to the end of the season. We currently have plenty of people lined up for PB training and Steve Skinner is kindly running several training sessions so there should be ample resource to be able to meet our PB needs to the end of the season. All we need is someone who can work with a computer and is willing to take on a bit of organising over the next couple of months to manage the process.

This individual would join the Sailing Committee who meet once a month (first Tuesday of the month).

If you would like to know more about this role or would like to put your name forward, please email me.

Patrol Boat Recovery and Wash Down

I had a comment the other day from a PB driver about how he recognises that, when recovering a Patrol Boat, he feels that he gets more help from the dinghy sailors than he used to get. A big thank you to everyone who helps with the recovery operations, especially when the tide is low!

A couple of requests to make which apply to everyone on the slip, not just the nominated PB crew.

Re: Marlin – the winch is not to be used as a securing mechanism. Once Marlin is on the trolley, please use the painter to secure her to the trolley. We had an accidental launch in the compound a few weeks ago as a result of her not being tied down!

Re: all patrol boats – when you are washing them down, please note that they are fully waterproof, all over! Please make sure that they are hosed down more thoroughly, including the consoles, seats and the insides of the tubes. We sometimes fail to do a good enough job of this so please use the hose more liberally and ensure that all salt, sand, mud and bits of seaweed are rinsed away.

Womens Open Keelboat Championships

3rd overall but 1st in the final race ending on a high The first day in the Solent saw blue skies and a steady westerly with 10kts across the race course. In class 2 we were rated the highest in our handicap meaning we knew we should be leading the fleet and have time on top to gain places. First start was a peach, biased to the committee boat we gave a slight luff to 2 boats to windward and bore off for speed down the line, pulling away in the lead we opened enough of a gap to hold on and claim the first race.
