Building confidence through sailing – how can you do it?

Applying character strengths to your lesson planning

August Sailor in Focus

Our August Sailor in focus, Ryan, has progressed from a 'manly pink topper' and has aspirations of winning championships and some foiling sailing. I'm sure many of you will recognise this sailing pathway.

RNSA(P) Wednesday Summer Series Race 9

A fitting end to a hard fought Summer Series, plenty of breeze and a fine turnout. Electron V the SOOD set a true beat to Motherbank, a kite reach to Kemps Quay, a gybe and a broader kite reach home. The focus was going to be on the fight for the podium positions in the IRC class which involved the 2 Sigma 33's Happy Apple and Spirit of Kudu and the Elan 333, Tinker T.

Indie insists on inspecting the chinchillas’ cage after I clean it (I guess he wants to make sure I did a proper job). There’s been more than a few occasions where he decided to actually *climb into* the cage, and managed to get himself *stuck*. I actually had to dismantle the 5′ cage to get him out once.

The normal thermal wind failed to arrive on the Sunday leading to a frustrating day in the dinghy park.

Rowing for Pleasure

As you may know the Tudor now has a rowing race team that has actually won trophies. They are, and will be, appearing on the walls of the clubhouse in due course. I am now working on building a Junior team, we have two Cadets already in training and we need a third to make a complete crew. I will teach them to both sweep and scull and by next year (when we have acquired the second Gig) it is my intention to have them compete in races alongside the adult team but in the Junior Class.

For anybody, young or old, rowing is a fantastic all over exercise routine, particularly strengthening the back, shoulders and Pelvic regions. “Rosie” is now in use with regular rowers each week and we are always seeking to include more people to make the rostering easier, particularly if you are retired and can fit in weekdays. We always have a laugh and we row in a most beautiful harbour that will “feed your soul”. I would urge every club member to consider building it into your weekly routine, within weeks you will know the difference and after 6 months you will be a significantly fitter person, if you doubt what I say then talk to the guys I regularly row with. Stop thinking “I cannot go rowing because I have THIS to” and start thinking “I cannot do THIS because I am going rowing”.

This coming Saturday 29th July the Gig will be on the water for an Easy Rowing session at approx.10.00hrs. These sessions are open to all club members, they will definitely not be punishing, nor too long to raise blisters. To have a go just email me. Kit needed:- A buoyancy aid of some sort, wet boots or wellies, gloves and a windcheater over some layers.

Keeping our club clean & tidy

  • Sorry to moan but rubbish being left on the floor / down sides of chairs / under tables has now become a regular unwelcome sight at Tudor (see attached recent picture. Please can all parents be more aware of their children’s mess and leave the club tidy.
  • Patio – furniture, can all members please stack up the chairs and put the tables away under the canopy when not in use. We have lost quite a few recently when they have been left out in high winds and broken.
  • Changing rooms – the changing rooms are cleaned weekly so please help leave them clean for others by rinsing feet before entering or rinsing the floor using the hoses located under the sink benches.
