Waiting for the Tide

Apologies a quick correction to my previous Tidal Diamond piece, the AGM is on Sunday 9th not as stated. I got the correct date, but the wrong day – it’s not as if I’ve been a member for a long time with AGMs on a Sunday for as long as I can remember!. Once more for luck…

Tudor AGM this Sunday 9th January at 1400hrs
– Zoom link and docs in separate email

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Let’s be careful out there.

Recycling – more suggestions

Old boat parts don't have to end up in landfill... The Green Blue, the joint environmental programme of the RYA and British Marine, gets to see quite a few ideas when out and about on site visits to clubs, marinas and centres. Car park barriers made from old masts to an old winch used to open and close a skylight window are just a couple that spring to mind.

Entry/Exit System (EES) for crossing EU borders

Expected to go live by June 2022 The EES is an automated IT system for registering travellers from third countries, both short stay visa holders and visa-exempt travellers, each time they cross an EU external border. This means that British nationals travelling to and from EU countries will no longer have their passports stamped.

Do you have a Tribord LJ 150N life jacket ?

Recall Decathlon are asking customers who bought the French sailing brand's life jacket between April and August 2021 to return it to a store, where a full refund will be given. The model code is 8641609. The defect, stated to be a risk that the life jacket's harness 'may fail if you fall overboard' is said not to affect the buoyancy of the product, 'but it may mean that you are no longer attached to your boat, making it unsafe to use.

Waiting for the Tide

Well here we are in 2022 hoping the decade is going to start improving. Sailing wise we have the Icicle series starting soon and socially there’s the Inter Club Darts (see above – again, we wouldn’t want anyone forgetting). Further events should be published sometime around renewals – I can sense the anticipation for the coming season already. Cruiser owners are planning the work ready for launch (with suitable contingencies for possible restrictions at the wrong time!), and some hardy dinghy and kayak owners, and rowers have just kept going of course (not implying cruiser owners aren’t hardy too, working under their boats in all weathers!). It was nice to hear some members were interested in the piece in the last TD, and it wasn’t just an old club member rambling on trying to fill some space!

So, welcome to 2022 and…

Waiting for the Tide

Well, prepared for sparse content between Christmas and New Year I posed a question last week. This week, to make the most of the question, I’ll provide the long answer.

Back when the club was based adjacent to the Eastern Road bridge we lived under the constant threat of losing our lease, which was always short due to plans to widen the Eastern Road. Well, although we did finally move to our current location the road is still the same width, so I guess we could have stayed put; aside from the fact that we would likely still be on notice of imminent move, I for one don’t miss the ‘fun’ of trying to cross all the lanes to head north (or head south and sort out turning round, which wasn’t as easy when the airport was opposite – although the windsock was handy!). During that time we kept patching up the old clubhouse not wanting to spend too much money on it in case we had to abandon it. The half that was originally the workshop became incorporated into the bar area to make it larger (you have to get the priorities of a sailing club right after all) and the portacabin toilets at the back were, well, perhaps best forgotten – but a vast improvement over the brick.. shed by the east slip. Anyway, at some point, and I don’t remember exactly when (I was quite young after all), we acquired a new bar; one solid enough to be worth salvaging and transporting to our current location. In its previous life it was a bank counter, if memory serves in the Havant branch of TSB, and we managed to salvage it when the branch was refurbished. Bank counters were very different back then! So there you go, a nugget of useless information this week!

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Let’s be careful out there.

… and here’s to a Happy New Year (and a good sailing season)

Boxing Day Race

This year’s Boxing Day race will start at the club line at 11am. This will be 2 hours after low water but will mean a more sociable time to be out racing after the festive overindulging.

For this race to go ahead we still need a trained up patrol boat crew to volunteer via Dutyman. Hopefully the weather will be favourable on the day for a festive race.

Waiting for the Tide

Last Tidal Diamond before Christmas so I’m going to pose a question here for everyone to ponder over the coming week (as if you’ve got nothing better to do). The Tudor clubhouse has quite a nice bar counter compared to some (not all, but for a self help club that has always been running on careful budget we’ve done well), but where did it come from? Has anyone ever wondered? Does anyone remember? You’ll be please to know (maybe) that I can provide the answer next week.

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Let’s be careful out there.

… and have a Merry Christmas
