Young Rowers – Autumn / Winter Schedule

The cooler, crisper air and the views of the changing harbour and beyond make rowing through the Autumn and Winter just as much fun as the warmer months. But we are, of course, losing the light earlier each day. To ensure our young rowers can experience the fun and benefits of rowing in cooler temperatures the weekly coaching sessions for Autumn and Winter will take place on Saturdays at 12 noon. This is effective from Saturday 25th September.

As, by design, there are limited seats on a gig, please book a place by contacting me at the email below. From there you’ll be sent the necessary consent paperwork to complete and added to our Young Rowers WhatsApp group where we can keep you up to date easily on news, information on weather and suitable clothing, and all the fun your children are having. Sessions will be £2 per rower per week which goes towards club gig maintenance.

A quick reminder, rowers under the age of 15 will be mainly taught sculling technique to protect their young musculature from the side stresses of Sweep oars.

All coaches will be DBS checked and the training will be carried out under the Tudor rowing section safety protocols which are available in the rowing section of the website. The group will naturally be monitored by the club welfare officer.

Any questions, as always, just get in touch.

Waiting for the Tide

To round off this weeks Tidal Diamond a couple of interesting LNtM from QHM Portsmouth:

Actually, perhaps ’rounding off’ is the wrong term. Do check below for a new maintenance job opportunity and the Diary Dates section.

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Let’s be careful out there.

Maintenance Jobs

  • The club waste container needs putting out the day before scheduled collection and then replacing in the compound shortly after it has been emptied. (approx. every 2 weeks). This is an ongoing requirement throughout the year. If this suits your scene please contact Ian DuCane at maintenance

HSSC Weekly Update Friday 17th September 2021

From the Club Sec. Ladies and Gentlemen, JOE RAINE I am sorry to report that Joe, our Marina Ops assistant, was involved in a motor-cycle accident yesterday and has sustained some serious injuries (not life threatening). I have been keeping in touch with his parents and have passed on our best wishes to Joe and his family.

HSSC RNSA Autumn Series Race 4 Results

Course: Stokes Bay East - Browndown - Mother Bank - Stokes Bay East - Finish By Ric Hanslip: After the disappointment of the previous week the weather gods smiled upon the small fleet gathered at Gilkicker point for a slightly earlier race start. The 9-10 Knot westerly was perfect and with a west going tide the small boats should stay in touch with the faster ones up the beat to the west.

Gould / Challenge Series

This Saturday is the first of 3 races for the Gould/challenge series. For this race to go ahead we still need a patrol boat crew. If you are trained up then please volunteer via Dutyman. For those who don’t know the Gould series is run in parallel to the challenge series. The Gould series has a personal handicap number based on the competitors race results from qualifying races during this season. The challenge series is open to all members regardless of any race results from this season.

Waiting for the Tide

There’s a couple fewer lines in the Diary Dates section this week. It is the time of year when things begin to wind down, and although I could have filled the extra rows, they would have contained the compound reorganisation and cruiser recovery weekend; I decided not to put them in as I’m not quite ready to give up on this season yet!

On the LNtM front, and as if to prove the season isn’t quite over, there is a Cross Solent Paddle on 16th September, between Ryde Sands and Stokes Bay. This may slip to 17th if the weather is poor, which is likely key for a lone paddle boarder (well, with support vessels). More details at: https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/QHM/Portsmouth/Local-Notices/LNTM/2021/2169.

Of course I’m sure there are those challenging this talk of the season close, as we do have the Frostbite and Icicle series to keep the dinghy sailors going through the colder months, as well as some hardy rowers who will be keeping club members on the water.

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Let’s be careful out there.

Maintenance Jobs

A new section for the Tidal Diamond where you can check for opportunities to tick off those maintenance hours. Just announcing the feature this week, but watch this space in future Tidal Diamonds. In the mean time see Dutyman for opportunities to help out with the social and sailing events.

I’m sure there will be some stuff here soon, but in the mean time I thought some links to other club duties that can cover maintenance hours would be worth adding (possibly moving to the Useful Links section later).
