Upcoming Races and Events

Friendly Fridays – the season starts here! Friday 30th March (Good Friday) – 18:30

The first Friendly Friday of the new sailing season will be on the evening of Friday 30th March. This first session called ‘Getting on the Water’ will give members the opportunity to prepare for the new season.

Do you need help / assistance rigging your boat? Would you like to learn how to rig one of the club boats? Do you have a new spinnaker you would like to rig? There will be a handful of ‘experienced sailors’ on hand to answer your questions and help get you ready to get the most out of the warmer weather.

Trafalgar Pursuit Race – Saturday 31th March – 12:00

The first race of the season will be the Trafalgar Pursuit Race, with the first start scheduled for 12:00. A list of the class start times will be issued in next week’s TD.

If you have not participated in a pursuit race before, there will be expert advice available to you, both at the Friendly Friday session on the previous evening, and also before the race on the Saturday.

In short – boats start at different times depending on your handicap, with the slower classes setting off first and faster classes chasing them down. The race is run for a set time period, and positions are recorded after this time period has elapsed, wherever you might be on the race course. In summary, it takes the normal ‘handicap style’ race and turns it on its head. More information to follow next week.

Spring Series 1 / Easter Egg Race – Sunday 1st April – 12:30

This race is no Aprils’ Fool… the first of the Spring Series races give sailors the chance to win some chocolate (or ginger beer if you cannot eat chocolate!).

This race is held from the club line and will be around the cans in the harbour.

Training Day – Monday 2nd April (Easter Monday) – 12:00

The sailing committee have scheduled a training day prior to the Cruiser Launch weekend, to allow members to receive training on some of the club equipment.

If you are interested in any of the following exercises, please contact me below, and I will add your name to the list.

Gurgle – Pioner Multi

  • Familiarisation session with our new club patrol boat / ferry. Session will include practising coming into the slip and using the bow door / loading ramp, and coming alongside a cruiser on a mooring.

Bruce – Committee Boat

  • Shore-based familiarisation session, suitable for both race officers and wannabe tug boat drivers / operators (including those who wish to use Bruce for fishing trips etc.).

Duties

As Richard has said, the new sailing season is due to get underway on the 31st of March, however as of the 19th March we have a number duties that need filled in order that the events can get under way. If we do not have patrol boat volunteers or Race officers then the races will not happen. Please volunteer via DutyMan.

  • Saturday 31 March: Two Patrol Boat Helms, one Patrol boat crew and a Race officer
  • Sunday 1 April 1: One Patrol boat Helm and a Race officer.
  • Sunday 15th April: a Race officer
  • Sunday 21st April: a Patrol boat helm
  • Sunday 29th April: a Patrol boat crew

Race Officers: We are in general short of race officers for the season and would appreciate some volunteers to be Race Officers, training is available along with support from the racers in the pre and post race phases. The main part of the job is starting the race and timing the finishes. Do not worry about processing the results as support can be provided by the racers after the finish.

Cruiser Relaunch

Hopefully, cruiser owners will be aware that relaunch is booked for the 7th / 8th April and we expect to launch all boats unless you have confirmed that you do not intend to launch. We need all to attend that weekend to help, if you have not been given a particular task please see Linda Vacher Richard Gunn or myself on day. And finally we need all to attend a safety brief on April 4th @ 8pm.

Get into Print!

Getting ready for another sailing season? Why not put pen to paper – or fingers to keyboard – and write a contribution for the next issue of Ebb & Flow. Didn’t you make a new year’s resolution to write for the magazine? Let’s hear what you were doing out on the water in 2017. There must be some sailing stories out there that deserve a wider audience so please get in touch – anything sailing (or vaguely) sailing-related is welcome. Cadets and new members are encouraged to contribute as well as those who have been “floating around” for longer.

Please send your contributions to the email below.

First Aid Courses

The sailing committee are planning to run a RYA registered First Aid Course on Saturday the 17/03 and we still have 3 places left. The course will run from 0900 until around 1600, the price will include a certificate and a first aid manual for all attendees. The cost will be £270 for 12 students ,that works out at £22.90 per student. The course would be ideal for safety boat drivers and crew, or for Cruiser sailors that travel further afield. If you are interested please drop me an email to andy.healey to reserve a place. We will work on a first come basis but can always book another course if we have sufficient numbers.

Notice of Key Safes code changes

Following membership reviews it has been decided that the key safes in the clubhouse need their codes to be changed. This is so that we can make sure those who have properly been trained and are current members are the only ones who have access. The new codes will be circulated around by the appropriate member of the exec committee to the current members who have been trained. These new codes will be in place from midday on the 17th March.
