Women on the Water – Thursday 21st June
New for this season is Thursday evening Women on the Water sessions. These are an opportunity for Tudor ladies to sail, kayak, row or windsurf in company. So far the ladies have sailed, rowed and kayaked and plan to also SUP and RIB before the summer is finished.
Make time on Thursday evenings* to come and join a group of like minded ladies having fun on the water in our beautiful harbour.
The sessions currently are flexible and we plan activities that you would like to do. There is no planned patrol boat but we can take out marlin with those that would like to get some more hours on the boat if we want to.
Arrive to rig the boats from 5.30pm
on the water for 6.45pm

Patrol Boat Training
The training dates that Phil had offered for 15th has been filled.
There is one space left on 29th June.
If you would like to be trained on 29th July (or perhaps be listed as a reserve on either of these dates should anyone drop out), let me know.
Phil has also offered us the 6th July (which has the most attractive tides of the three!) so there is still training space available.
If you would like to be trained, please let me know whether you require training for PB1 or PB2 (if the latter, you must already have received PB1 training). I will then arrange the course for the most popular request.
Please note that, to make the most of the light (and still get Phil into the bar for a pint), these sessions should start at 4:30pm (5pm at the latest at a push!). I realise that this is quite early for a workday but, if you can’t make this time, we will have to wait until we have a weekend date from one of our other trainers.

Club Duties
As many of you will know the second set of duties have been released so please check your email. The Langstone Harbour race weekend duties have not be allocated as the Sailing committee would prefer that it is staffed by volunteers. As it is expected to be a long duty it will count extra compared to a normal duty. If you can do one or more of these duties please volunteer on Dutyman and email me if you need an allocated duty deleted to compensate. There are a few other gaps in the allocation that need volunteers the first of which is a patrol boat helm for the 8th July.

Cockleshell Challenge 2018 – Well Done 1,2,3
Tudor Sailing Club entered two teams into the Eastney Cruising Association Cockleshell Challenge 2018 event. The event consists of a number of races on Saturday around their mooring buoys near to their slipway, a longer sprint race to/around New Sinah Buoy and a straight line handicapped pursuit from the fairway to ECA finish line. The Cockleshell Challenge was the Handicapped 7.2nm pursuit race to Horse Sands Fort and back.
Well Done No 1
Our cadets Ella Williams, Callum Robbins, Daniel Robbins and Jay Ducane rotated the rowing and were coxed in all of the Saturday races by Ian Ducane.
How good were they!!! They took on Solent galleys (4 rowers), Cornish gigs (6 rowers) and St Ayles skiff (4 rowers). They were placed 2nd in 3 races and 4th in another, being beaten by a few seconds. These results were very impressive considering the other boats were crewed by adult and more experienced people. It was good to see the commitment and tenacity shown by our cadets in their races recognised by the other competitors, handshakes and praise was freely given. When not in “Rosie”, Callum + Jay were experiencing the conditions in other club boats.
They are now looking forward to their next event – Hamble River Games – 6 mile pursuit 16th June 2018.
Well done No 2
Graham Ducane placed himself in the Kayak Cockleshell Challenge Event. The same course as the gigs and galleys. Graham was up against sea kayaks and was unfortunately not given the handicap expected against this type of craft. He did however beat galley and gigs back to the finish.
Well Done No 3
The second Cockleshell Challenge event took place on Sunday. “Rosie” was crewed by John Elson, Ian Ducane, Sandy Craig and coxed by Jay Ducane. We were heavily handicapped this year. We were not expected to win.
How wrong were they.
We pushed hard to the submarine blocks holding off the gigs and galleys about 2 minutes behind, turning to Horse Sand Fort we were catching the lead boat. As we turned on the fort we were right behind “Mabel”, we passed her and were then catching the leading kayaks. We continued pushing hard to the fairway leaving the rest of the fleet in our wake. We took the line to the winner bank to reduce the wind and ebbing tide and raced to the finish line in 1st place with the second boat 8 minutes behind. Our time was 1hr 41mins, 6 minutes faster than last year and against a heavier tide and wind.
We have brought the Cockleshell trophy back to Tudor Sailing Club for another year.
Thank you to all competitors, their families and the Tudor members who were there for support in this event.
A big thank you to the ECA for their invitation, generous hospitality, post event party and prize giving.
We will be back again to defend the trophy.
