Launch Weekend

Wednesday 6 April is the cruiser launch briefing which will be held at the club with the bar open. ALL cruiser members are required to attend to listen to the do’s and don’t’s to make this a successful launch operation.

Cruiser members are also required to turn up and stay throughout BOTH launch days, regardless of when their cruiser is put in the water (Saturday or Sunday), until launch is completed, as 3-4 crew members will be required to help launch each boat from the hoist.

Saturday launch will be an early start with members arriving 6am to clear the way for the hoist and launch the support boats etc.

Your support is appreciated.

Relaunch Briefing and Compound Reorganisation

Hi – please can I draw your attention to the following information.

The briefing for the cruiser relaunch will be held at 8pm Wednesday 6th (bar will be open). This is an important event where we allocate jobs for the weekend, organise the first few launches and give you updates on procedures. Please make every effort to attend.

Relaunch itself will begin at 6:30am for 7am on Saturday 9th. Times tbc for Sunday 10th

Compound Reorganisation10am to 12 noon on Saturday 23rd April (2 weeks after relaunch due to Easter). I will send out more details nearer the time, but please put this date in your diary.

Cruisers – please ensure that your buoy is clearly labelled with your number prior to relaunch.

Dinghy owners – we will be labelling all dinghies that are not labelled with your name and type of boat using plastic labels (as per the bylaws). Please ensure before 23rd April that you trolley is in good repair, tyres pumped up and that the boat is not full of water.

Please note that the slipway will be closed for the weekend for all other activities. We will notify members by email if we finish early on Sunday.

Training – Water Side

Following on from Alex Ford’s excellent guide published by email on 23rd March, if you wish to volunteer for Race Officer or Power Boat training please fill in your details on the club website and I can add you to my lists.

From the website homepage (www.tudorsailing.org.uk) click on the Members tab then choose ‘Request Training’ from the drop down menu.

Please only sign up for the next level of training once you have completed the one before.

For power boat it would be helpful if you could also email me at training if you have any relevant qualifications or experience so I can group you into the appropriate training sessions. Also if you are a trained helm happy to volunteer to run shore-based familiarisation sessions to new PB volunteers please do email me and we can make arrangements. This can be a stand alone session or if you are happy to turn up early to a PB duty I can arrange a trainee or two to meet you there to shadow the setup.

We are hoping to run some power boat training sessions on 7th / 8th April and during the first week of May (1st -8th) so please keep an eye out for updates and invites.

Race officer training will re-commence soon and include opportunities to train to manage races from our committee boat, Bruce, as well as from the race box at the club. There will be initial familiarisation individual and small group sessions available some evenings to sign up for as well as more in depth training to take place alongside the race programme set out in our activities calendar.

I am therefore looking for experienced Race Officers to volunteer to assist with training, either to train new volunteers from scratch or to be a buddy to help them progress their training and become approved. Please email me if you are able to help in this way.

Training time through our approved programme count towards your duty hours so please do sign up!

Thank you

Horse Sand Fort Row

Most weeks around Thursday lunch time the chaps start a discussion about where we could row on the Saturday morning. It was enormously exciting last week when the famous Fort row was suggested (exciting for me mainly because I’ve never completed this row before).

It didn’t disappoint. An easy row to the harbour entrance and a light North Easterly breeze tempted our fleet of four boats to head out to the fairway mark then rounding Horse sand Fort, back along the “Blocks” to beach at the “Coffee cup” for a well earned break. All was well until we came to launch for the return to the club. The wind had risen with a tad more East to it, causing a rough launch into breaking surf, then a rough and rather tough ”attrition” haul along Eastney front before reaching the comparative calm of the run. For the ‘fort first timers’ it was as challenging as it was exciting and though measurement apps varied it registered between 19k to 21k depending on which boat you rowed. Some of us are nursing a few blisters. Those of us without fancy pumps were glad we had a bailer. It was fantastic to ‘bump into’ club members on the beach who joined us for coffee.

I’ve attached a couple of pictures (taken before the wind had risen). Thank you to our most experienced rowers for keeping everyone safe and making it memorable and lots of fun. It’s definitely one we’ll be repeating when time and weather allow. Don’t forget to get in touch if you want to row. We promise your first row will be gentle ?.

Care on the Slip

As we approach the start of another season, it’s worth a reminder to take care on the slipway. It can be slippery this time of year, although it should improve with use. As a precaution please think about wearing appropriate footwear (with a good grip) and asking for help if you have a heavily laden dinghy.

It’s also been reported that it’s really muddy at the bottom of the slip and the mud might try and grab your wellies.

Be careful out there!

Start of Season Get Together, Reopening and Prize Giving

All members are cordially invited to celebrate the grand bar re-opening, the start of the new season and the annual prize giving ceremony on the 1st April. The bar will be open from 7:30pm with the usually good selection of alcoholic and soft drinks at pub beating prices. There will also be 3 flavours of pasties including a vegetarian option served with salad available to members for free. Either way please do book via webcollect to avoid disappointment https://webcollect.org.uk/tudorsc/event/start-of-season-get-together. In addition there will be the club’s annual prize giving ceremony. So please do come down to support your club and fellow club members at the start of the 2022 season.

For the evening we would like to have a slideshow of photos showing Tudor Sailing Club over the many years. So if you have any photos that have not been uploaded to Facebook or linked to the website via Flickr then please email them to sailingsec.

Coastal Random Rowing

Saturday was a gloriously sunny day and 15 Tudor members set off (some by sea) to Northney Marina.

The Coastal Rowing Academy had planned 36 races in 6 types of boats with 12 teams from 14 Clubs taking place within 4 hours…and breathe. No trophies just a wonderful chance to try different vessels and have some fun. Hence the name Random Rowing. But you know plans on the water and weather!

It was an amazing sight. A harbour full of Bursledons, Skiffs, Solent Galley, Celtics, Coastal Quad and Cornish Pilot Gigs.

As the wind built, the course and race format both had to be changed but it didn’t stop over one hundred rowers having fun, making new friends and celebrating our beautiful harbour in the sunshine.

Tudor SC was amongst rowers from:

Bosham, Christchurch, Chichester, Molesey, Langstone, Hamble River, Dell Quay, Mengeham Rythe, Dittons, Royal Navy and Thames Barbarians.

I can’t sign off without mentioning the epic moment three ‘seasoned’ Tudor rowers decided to test their might in Freedom (a Bursledon Gig) against six rowers in Trafalgar, a Royal Navy Pilot Gig. A great row to watch, with Tudor victorious! ? true determination and teamwork on show.

I’ve collected many pictures of the day and if you’d like to see more, just get in touch, but the one I’ve chosen to attach had to be the moment our fearless (some might say mad) Freedom crew crossed the line first against the mighty Pilot Gig ?

If you haven’t already tried rowing, do get in touch. There’s so many fun, leisurely, and competitive adventures coming up this year now is definitely the time to start.

Club Hire Season Tickets Under Development

To keep members in the loop the sailing committee are in the process of setting up season tickets for the hire of the club dinghies, kayaks and rowing gigs. Pricing and details will be sent out once it has all been finalised. But at this stage it is looking highly likely that there will be a season ticket for each section (I.E. single handed dinghy, double handed dinghy, rowing gig seat, kayak seat). It is also looking like an overall season ticket that covers every section will be available. All bookings will remain on a first come first served basis regardless of if you have a season ticket or not.

I’m sure you’ve noticed our new CCTV system which has been installed at the club. We hope it will help protect property belonging to TSC and members alike. I’ve attached a document which outlines our CCTV policy and how images are captured, stored, accessed and disclosed in order to improve security whilst still protecting the privacy of our members. Also attached is a CCTV image request form to seek access to images under certain, limited and legitimate criteria. All the best
