Round the Island Race 2022 – 25/06/2022 –

Start off Cowes on Saturday 25th June 2022 See link below for full details.

HSSC RNSA Summer Series Race 2

From Ric Hanslip. With the deep Atlantic low transiting the country bringing frequent showers some torrential accompanied by squally gusts up to 37 knots the second race of the “Summer” Series looked in doubt. However some of the forecasting models were optimistically predicting an easing of conditions by 1830, race start time and so with fingers firmly crossed the organiser did not cancel! “phew” At start time just one dark cumulus was fading to the northeast and the small fleet gathered at Gilkicker were treated to a frisky South Westerly of around 15 knots – ideal racing conditions.

Knotty Night – 17th June

Don’t forget to book your places for our ‘Knotty Night’.

Our first ‘seamanship’ evening of the year, and an opportunity to practice all the essential knots you need to stay safe and secure when afloat.

The 2nd seamanship evening will be ‘Turning the Tides’ in July

Before you start practising you can enjoy a ploughmans supper served from 6pm, and the bar will be open.

Every knot serves a purpose, and knowing how to tie a selection is vital knowledge to possess when going on the water. Ropes and knots have a unique and ancient history and without them sailing would never have developed into the pastime that we love today.

This will be a fun evening for newer members, but we’d be delighted if long-standing members came along too to pass on knowledge and join in the fun.

There is no need to eat to participate, but please book if you fancy coming along to give us an idea on numbers

Friendly Friday Rowing Race Night

And It’s that time again. An invitation to get together for an informal race night at Friendly Friday on 24th June at 6pm. This month we are delighted to welcome rowers from Hamble River Rowing as our guests.

Not one to be missed, these evenings are great fun. In brief we’ll mix the teams up as always (randomly selected) and race around the Broom channel buoy and back.

The trophy will be awarded to the fastest team and the most important coveted wooden spoon will be hand painted and yours to keep forever. Although I don’t recommend eating your supper with it. As always our wonderful social committee will feed us. It’s jacket potato with a selection of fillings to choose from this month and food tickets can be purchased via web collect. Food, drink, and lots of fun. Come along and race or just come to watch and get to know each other. All our new club members most definitely welcome. Friends and family very welcome too.

  • 6.15pm – Briefing on course info, rules and safety.
  • 6.30pm – let the battles commence.

Ebb & Flow:

Since I’ve had to add them into the Diary Dates section, I’m going to emphasis the new entries here. There’s a Curry & Quiz Night on 10th June – that’s this Friday, so see above to book quickly. There’s also a follow on to the Knotty Night already scheduled for 22nd July – Turning the Tide, on tides in the harbour. More details to come in a future Tidal Diamond, but from our club website:

“Following on from knotty night, our next seamanship evening is Turning the tide. Please sign up for a beginner’s look at how the tides work in our harbour, and what affects them. Plus some basic training on all those floating buoys out there and what they mean for you. Did you know, the moon and the sun have their own gravitational fields, much like Earth. Whilst they won’t pick us up and make us float off into space, they are powerful enough to move the oceans around the planet…literally pulling the sea towards them. For more fun facts and key information for being out on the water come and join us There’ll be chilli and rice served between 6pm and 7pm and our speakers will start at around 7pm. You don’t have to eat to come along, but pre booking either way would be appreciated so we know numbers to expect/cater for. Although this evening is developed for newer members, our seasoned sailors, rowers, and paddlers are very welcome as the more advice and guidance in the room the better.”

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Let’s be careful out there.
