HSSC Weekly Update Saturday 25th June 2022

From the Club Sec. Ladies and Gentlemen, WELCOME LOUISA (LOU) AS THE NEW CLUB SECRETARY! Lou and I have spent our first week handing over the role of Club Secretary. Thank you to those members who have had the opportunity to pop in and welcome her to the Club. Lou will pick up the role from the end of next week and I will be around for a few weeks yet.

RNSA HSSC Summer Series Race 4

From Ric Hanslip. The nights are drawing in – Summer Solstice +1 day. However the light South Easterly, although expected to fade, was enough to produce a race which required much thought and not a little anticipation. Jambo the SOOD set a course of a beat into the strong west going tide to N Sturbridge, a kite reach to Kemps Quay, a gybe and a marginal kite reach home.

This Friday we are lucky to be joined by rowers from Hamble, so an enjoyable social evening is planned. As usual all are welcome to come along and join in with the rowing, or have a drink and some food if you wish to, the more the merrier.

Our rowing captain Jane will tell you more.

We will be serving jacket potatoes with your choice of filling.

Raring to Row for 24 hours 1st -2nd

The rowing section are completing a 24 hour water relay from the 1st – 2nd July 2022 in support of the Atlantic Ocean Rowing Team, helping to raise vital funds for their Charity Action Medical Research and their continued drive to fund research in rare diseases in children and preventing premature births and the complications that this can cause.

Please help us support this fantastic cause, by sponsorship, donation or by purchasing raffle tickets!

We would be grateful of donations for raffle prizes please, I shall leave a box in the club

We would love to see on 2nd July from 3pm onwards for the finish and for beers and BBQ

Let’s try and make as much money as possible for this amazing children’s charity!

Wimbledon Ladies Final – 9th July

Come along and watch the ladies Wimbledon final on the clubs big screen and enjoy a glass of prosecco, whilst enjoying either a delicious bowl of eton mess or strawberries and cream.

Sword Sands Fun Day – 10th July

SAVE THE DAY!

The tide is right, let’s hope the weather will be too!

Let’s all make the most of having our own island so close by and spend the day on Sword Sands enjoying the sun, sand and sea.

Bring along your footballs, frisbees, your badminton racquets etc, along with a picnic. The main thing is to bring yourselves and your friends and family along.

Then back to the club for a BBQ and a few drinks to finish the day off.

BBQ will be pay on the day.

Just one more thing before I go, if anyone needs duty hours and is willing to help with preparation, serving, washing up or help with the BBQ’s, please contact me or look on Dutyman.

Due to operations, illnesses etc, I am currently on my own, sympathy gratefully received, but help would be even better ?

Thank you

Rowing Section Friendly Friday Race Night

A reminder that our June rowing race night is this Friday 24th.

As always everyone is welcome, whether to row, spectate or just mingle.

If you do want to row timings are below.

Our social committee are serving jacket potato with various fillings and I’ve included their web collect below if you’d like to order. Please do order if you want to eat as it will be a busy one this Friday.

  • ?‍♀️ Meet at 6pm for rowing.
  • ?‍♀️ Briefing 6.15pm.
  • ?‍♀️ Supper from 8pm.
  • ?‍♀️ Bar open.

A few highlights from recent Portsmouth QHM LNtM this week:

It looks as though 25th June is going to be busy out there! See below to links for a full list of LNtM, as well as the LHB notices. This are just a few that caught my eye this week.

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Let’s be careful out there.

HSSC RNSA Summer Series Race 3 Results

From Ric Hanslip. The light South Easterly was expected to fade as the evening deepened so a course was selected in this expectation. A broad reach to Stokes Bay Central followed by a beat with tide behind to North Sturbridge and a run home. Jambo had the best of the start taking an inshore line out of the tide with a rapid spinnaker set giving them an early lead of a couple of boat lengths over Sunshine seeking better breeze out in the tide and Jolly Jack Tar a tad late on their kite set.

Knots and Tides

Turning the Tide – an intro evening to tides, wind, and buoys in our harbour. (And Knotty Night reminder)

Remember Knotty Night is this Friday.

It’s shaping up to be a great mixture of new members and seasoned knotters. Still bookable if you’ve forgotten (should’ve knotted some ribbon on your finger ?)

And on behalf of the sailing committee and Sue and the social committee, I’d like to announce the second seamanship evening of the year. July 22nd.

Frequently requested, please sign up for a beginner’s look at how the tides work in our harbour, and what affects them. Plus some basic training on all those bobbing buoys out there and what they mean for you.

Did you know, the moon and the sun have their own gravitational fields, much like Earth. Whilst they won’t pick us up and make us float off into space, they are powerful enough to move the oceans around the planet…literally pulling the sea towards them.

For more fun facts and key information for being out on the water come and join in on 22nd July.

We have an external speaker coming along for the evening. Formerly Royal Navy, John Bearman now works for the marine policing unit in our local waters and is a RYA Instructor.

There’ll be chilli and rice served between 6pm and 7pm and our speakers will start at 7pm. You don’t have to eat to come along, but pre booking either way would be appreciated so we know numbers to expect/cater for.

Here’s the link:

https://webcollect.org.uk/tudorsc/event/turning-the-tide

Although this evening is developed for newer members, our seasoned sailors, rowers, and paddlers are very welcome as the more advice and guidance in the room the better.

(Please note though this is friendly advice, and not formal training. Your safety is 100% in your hands, not anyone else’s).

Looking forward to seeing you all there.

Jane: What did the ocean say to the shore?
Sue: Nothing. It just waved.

Ebb & Flow:

We have a for sale / wanted section on the website, but having had this email through I thought I’d put it in this section:

Wayfarer 679: Red Tape

It probably happens to us all eventually. Age and health issues force lifestyle changes that are quite unexpected and come in a great rush!

My dinghy racing days are over. I will find another way to get on the water but, for now, must find a new sailor for a rather special wooden Wayfarer that was built in Portsmouth Dockyard in 1963, fully renovated in 1999 and sailed regularly for the next 20+ years. To my mind, it is a Portsmouth boat that should continue to be sailed in Portsmouth waters – and Langstone Harbour + the Solent is difficult to beat.

It would please me enormously to pass Red Tape (+ all the ‘extras’) to a new owner, preferably a Tudor member, who has an interest in dinghy sailing – perhaps with a young family in tow – and could envisage giving the boat yet another 20 years active use.

The price – I would be pleased to exchange her for a decent donation to a charity – preferably one supported by TSC.
Interested – or know someone who could be – please do get in touch.
