Progress report from RC(C) and a H&S reminder Fair winds, clam seas and look forward to seeing you come over the horizon on 4th and 5th May 2019 It is fantastic to see so many boats and crews joining in NL75 for what should be a fantastic and poignant occasion. Could I please remind you that, from a RNSA perspective, owners/skippers are responsible for their own safety for all aspects of this event.

Dinghy Racing

On Saturday we have the Saturday series race 5 & 6 which should be started from a patrol boat down harbour. The races will be a short course with the second race being started as soon as all of the boats from the first race have finished.

On Sunday, after the dinghy cruise, there is the spring series race 7. This race will be starting at 4pm from the club line. You do not need to have entered any of the previous races in this series to take part.

Low Water Dinghy Cruise – Sunday 26th May, 1100

On Sunday we have the first dinghy cruise of the year. Possibilities for the trip are a sail along Southsea Seafront, if the weather is kind, and an exploration of the South Eastern part of the harbour, passing near the wrecked landing craft and then a passage through Rod Rithe, marked by perches. We may not go ashore anywhere, stopping is very much dependent on the wind direction and avoidance of lee shores. So, a likely plan for the day would be to have early elevenses (tenses?) at the club before setting sail around 1100 and then to have lunch on return to the club.

It would be nice if we could get some of our newer members without boats involved so if you are an experienced sailor taking a boat and will have room for one or two more crew or if you are a member without a boat, or not confident in your own boat, and would like to take up a crewing position then get in touch. We will do our best to match up extra crew with boats.

Please email your interest as soon as possible to the Dinghy Captain, Mark Swallow, at dinghies

Club Maintenance Opportunity – Bruce

The Sailing committee is looking for a volunteer or volunteers to finish the anti-fouling on Bruce. This would count towards duty time and would aid the club in relaunching Bruce in the near future. I understand that the job is already over half way done so please contact me on clubboats if you think you are in a position to help.

Rowing News

Unfortunately last Saturday was not only PTBO day but also the day of the “Hamble Raid” rowing race so the Tudor rowing section was split in half, with Rosie at the Tudor and Sandy Craig , John Elson and Ian Ducane with cox Daniel Robins in “Freedom” competing at Southampton.

The Tudor crew in Freedom came second in their class, only 6 seconds behind the the First place boat which has consistently been the strongest Bursledon gig crew for several years. It was an extremely hard fought race as is shown by the small margin after approx 5 miles with race times of around 50 minutes, with both teams left exhausted and a long gap between the two leaders and the rest of the fleet. If you would like to see some video we had a Go Pro on our flag staff, pull up Youtube and use this code to see the finish …gh070075.., the finish on this race is when the bell is rung on the beach by a crew member, much chaos and hilarity, for information the boat that beaches on our starboard side was the winner as they started 30 seconds after us but finished just 24 seconds behind. Special praise for our cox Daniel for keeping his cool under great pressure in maintaining a tight course line in spite of extremely tight and crowded conditions. This is a great event and hopefully next year the dates will not clash and the Tudor can enter a bigger team.
