The Bosun Challenge

Successful single-handed crossing of the Channel RNSA's Phil Slade completed a successful crossing from Dartmouth to St Peter Port in his Bosun Dinghy early yesterday morning and, despite fickle winds and a torrential downpour at one point, he made good time. Unfortunately the strong easterly winds forecast for the next 3 days mean that he will not be able to continue on to Jersey and, as the Contessas providing safety cover had to return to the College by the weekend, we will not be able to complete the Challenge on this occasion.

Women on the Water – Thursday 27th June

FANTASTIC SUNNY WEATHER BOOKED!

This week the plan is to go sailing (wind permitting) however, for those who are not keen sailors we have the option of splitting into two smaller groups and paddling if that suits. If it is too breezy for sailing then we will paddle and sail next week instead!

If you can’t make it this week don’t worry the sessions for 2019 are running weekly, drop a line to wow or come to any of the sessions.

See you on the water soon.

Rowing News

Tudor Rowing had another very successful story in the “Round Hayling Island” race last Sunday, and for the first time we had both Freedom and Rosie in the same race, Freedom claiming the trophies for both the Veterans (2nd. Year running) and fastest Bursledon Gig (Third year running). Conditions were atrocious causing one of the Langstone Cutter boats to retire as it could not make way against the force 6 blow and tide, for the Third year running it was far too rough for a circumnavigation so the course was in Harbours covering approximately 6 miles. Once again a special thanks to the Cox’s Ella and Jay for a superb job of conning the boats in rain, wind and following seas which cause the boats to yaw dramatically. 2 more trophies returning to the club case.

Club Security

I have been informed that a couple of off-duty police officers were at the club over the weekend. They’ve spotted a few dubious characters. One chap on a bicycle is well known to the police for breaking into cars.

There is now a lot more non club member activity around the club area and if these characters are scoping us out they are likely to return.

I’d like remind all members to keep valuables out of sight, lock cars and to keep club gates and doors closed and locked.

Consultation on yacht and powerboat safety at sea

This may be of interest to Tudor members. “This consultation seeks your views on 6 draft marine guidance notes (MGNs). The main reason for the intervention is to reinforce to owners, managing agents and skippers what is good practice in terms of safety when going out to sea. This is to reduce the risk of any accidents occurring as a result of not following the most acceptable standards of safety required.”

The 6 documents cover preparedness for non-coastal passages – good practice, maintenance, modifications, damage and repairs – good practice, rigs and rigging – good practice for inspection, grounding of fixed fin keel GRP yachts – good practice, emergency procedures, equipment and actions – good practice, and stowage of life-saving appliances – good practice.

RNSA(P) Wednesday Summer Series Race 5

Summer at last! A warm summers evening designed for sailing but with a blustery north easterly of 15/16 knots gusting to 27 to add a bit of interest. Jolly Jack Tar the SOOD Set a course designed for fast asymetrics, ooops there was only one, of a close kite reach to Browndown, a long fetch against the tide to North Sturbridge, a dead run to Kemps Quay and a close hauled leg back to the finish.

NL75 -An East Coast Perspective

The organisation of the RNSA\RNVRYC Commemoration Service and the Dinner with the Mayor had special poignancy as the commemoration of D-Day moves from the last personal memories to a matter of history.
