Bart’s Bash

This Saturday we are taking part in Bart’s Bash which is a global sailing race in aid for the Andrew Simpson foundation. As such it is meant to be a light hearted event to give members a chance to try dinghy racing. To find out more and sign up online so that you can see how you did in your dinghy class then please visit www.bartsbash.com

On the day we will be running a short course race in front of the clubhouse and will be joined by sailors from the outdoors centre next door. There will be a briefing at 11:45 before the race start at 12:30. In this briefing I will go over the course as well as the basics of dinghy racing for those who are unsure on the race start sequence.

Bart’s Bash Duties

If you don’t fancy taking part in Barts Bash on Saturday, and you need to do some more duty hours, I’m sure thirsty sailors coming off the water will appreciate the bar being open. It’s looking like it’ll be a sunny afternoon! Sign up on Dutyman

Rowing News

The rowing section made two rowing machines available on the Saturday of the club regatta, which had good use. There was also some rivalry on the water, where the Cruising Sailors proved too strong for the Dinghy Sailors – must be all that rowing to and from the moorings – and it was shown that rowing with blindfolds on is not necessarily a good idea.

There continues to be a strong turnout on Saturday mornings for new rowers – anyone who would like to give it a try, please let me know, as we can always find extra spaces. However, there will not be a new rowers’ session this Saturday the 14th as Rosie and Freedom will be attending the Great River Race. Both boats had a tough training session last Saturday, with the Rosie crew turning out in all their finery – see attached photograph. Even if we don’t do well in the race I doubt that any other crew will be able to match us in the Tudor Hat department!

Important Notice to all Cruiser Owners

From the Bosun’s committee. Sept 2019.

Shortly after the cruiser relaunch in April 2020 Civil Works begin on the sea wall defenses outside our clubhouse and Tudor’s slipway.

The work will be in progress for most of the sailing season which means our slipway WILL be out of action to both cruisers and sailing dinghies alike.

Therefore, it is imperative that ALL vessels that use the hoist are launched on the weekend of 3rd / 4th April (the Relaunch Weekend) there will be NO cruiser ‘layup extensions’ after this weekend.

The tractor and hoist will not be able to use our slipway or the outdoor centre slipway after that date. Any vessels launched then needing to be recovered / lifted after this date will have to make alternative arrangements.

Access to the sea will be via the Outdoor Centre’s slipway whilst our slipway is being worked on, then Tudor will reciprocate.

Any cruiser / vessel missing this dead line WILL be charged at the current storage rate.

Any cruiser owner that left their boat timbers in the compound early this year after relaunch will have to provide new ones as the compound was cleared of all abandoned materials. This is a reminder that you should take all your property home.

Any skippers requiring any special requests regarding their boat location in the compound should contact the Bosun’s committee via email before the 7th October.

Domestic boat emissions

Have your say !! The Department of Transport is asking boat owners, port and marina operators, boat yards and storage companies to respond to a Call for Evidence, looking at air pollutant emissions from all domestic vessels used around the coast and inland waterways. All the information gathered will be used to help the Government understand more clearly the extend of emissions from vessels that do not currently fall within the scope of environmental regulations, and establish if it can do more to address the issue.

New Hawk 20 proving popular

We were pleased to purchase a new Hawk 20 keelboat over the winter and are even more pleased to have recently secured funding for a second one from Sport England.

We will be able to expand the programme using these two boats, and we can fit more young people in a boat and they are more able to take part in the various roles on board the boat.

The programme has been running throughout the winter and we have experienced perfect sailing weather recently with blue skies and light winds to enjoy the new Hawk 20.

We have expanded the programme and now work with 6 local schools and we have plans to continue expanding through 2019!
