Weekend Racing
Gould/Challenge series
This Saturday is the first race for the Gould and Challenge series with a race start time of 4pm. The racing is open to all club members. The Gould Series is for members who have finished at least 4 qualifying races in the class they are entering. Gould-qualified competitors will be allocated a personal handicap number based on their prior performance. If you do not qualify for the Gould series, then you will be competing for the Challenge Trophy. Both the Gould and challenge series will be sailed together. So, on the day there will only be one race and regardless of what racing you have done this year there is a trophy to compete for.
Horse Sands Fort Race
This Sunday is the re-scheduled Horse Sands Fort race starting at 10am. This is a long distance out of harbour race that is high risk than the normal in harbour racing. For this event to go ahead we still need a patrol boat helm and crew. If you are trained up and available, please volunteer via dutyman by midnight Friday.

Solent Tsunami Talk – Friday 28th October
Come along to hear this amazing true story by Steve Russell, a former RNLI crewman.
A dramatic encounter of a Solent Tsunami by two Portsmouth Lifeboats on the East Winner bank and the subsequent hunt for the cause.
You will be introduced to natural phenomena that few would have believed could happen right here, in the Solent!
This was such a dramatic event it was kept very quiet about it, fearing ridicule.
The talk will begin at approximately 7pm. We will be serving jacket potatoes with salad, coleslaw and your choice of fillings from 6pm. Please book if you wish to come along so we can get an idea on numbers, thank you.

Bosun’s Update
Old Chain Wanted
We need to create tie-downs for dinghies in the inner compound. If members have any old top-chain that could be used for this, please will you bring it to the club and put it next to the clubhouse by the fuel store.
First Aiders for Recovery Weekend
We need to add to our list of qualified first-aiders to help cover Cruiser Recovery and Launch weekends.
If you have a current first aid certificate and can help out with this, please drop me an email.

Rowing Update
The Queen Elizabeth II Memorial River Procession
The Great River Race (GRR) is London’s River Marathon. A spectacular 21.6 mile fixed seat rowing gig race up the River Thames between Millwall and Ham which attracts crews from all over the globe.
Last Saturday was the date of the 2022 race, and on Friday morning 5 gigs (Olive, Lady Jane, Friendship, Navigator, Freedom) left Tudor Sailing Club heading for the start at Millwall in the East End of London. But by the time the gigs reached the starting point notification had been received that the organisers had decided, as a sign of respect to the Queens sudden death, that the race would be cancelled and replaced with a memorial river procession. The rules for the procession were that fancy dress would not be allowed and in line with maritime tradition all craft would be required to fly a flag at full mast with a piece of black fabric or ribbon attached.
The cancellation of the race was a great disappointment to all those involved but, for the majority, disappointment soon turned to excitement with the realisation that the 25 rowers/passengers and coxes from Tudor Sailing Club had been given the opportunity and honour of taking part in a historic event.
So on Saturday morning a Fleet of 168 rowing gigs assembled on the start line and at 11:15am the procession commenced with the slowest boats leaving first and the others in accordance with their designated handicap times. The boats travelled up the Thames past the historic landmarks of central London being cheered along by crowds who were watching from the bridges and banks of the Thames, with the majority of boats arriving at the finish line between 2.5 and 3.5 hrs later.
Whilst the procession was not timed and trophies were not awarded, Freedom and Navigator took the honour of leading the procession, with Lady Jane, Olive and Friendship taking their place in the main procession.
It was a memorable and on occasions emotional day for all those involved and whilst formal celebrations afterwards had been cancelled the Tudor rowers organised their own tasteful entertainment and helped ensure that the bar takings for the event organisers did not suffer too much.
Plans are already in hand for next years GRR on the 16th September 2023 when it is hoped that Tudor will be entering 6 boats, and potentially bringing back some trophies.

We need your photos!
Have you taken some photos this year / last year of club events or members out an about in boats?
The club website has a gallery but it needs member content to feed in to it.
The photos are pulled from the TSC Group on the Flickr photo sharing platform.
Please have a look at the following link for full instructions on how to get your pictures online.

I thought this LNtM from Portsmouth Harbour was worth including this week. With all the big events happening at the moment it can be easy to miss the smaller changes (all be it I can imagine implementing them is far from a small job).
“With effect from 1200 on Saturday 10 September 2022, recognising the formal proclamation as King of His Majesty King Charles III, the Queen’s Harbour Master Portsmouth will assume the title King’s Harbour Master Portsmouth (abbreviated to “KHM”). After this time, all radio calls on VHF Channels 11 and 13 are to use the callsign “King’s Harbour Master” or “KHM”.”
Full details at: https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/khm/Portsmouth/Local-Notices/General-Directions/2022/2202-PASSING-OF-HER-MAJESTY-QUEEN-ELIZABETH–AND-ACCESSION-OF-KING-CHARLES-III
Two more KHM LNtM:
Firstly, The 2 Fixed Green (vert) Lights on the southern end of Portsmouth Harbour station are currently unlit: https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/khm/Portsmouth/Local-Notices/Navigational-Warnings/2022/22-70
Secondly, Multiple Cross Solent Swims: 17 – 20 September: https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/khm/Portsmouth/Local-Notices/LNTM/2022/22-102
I am very much hoping those last two links work, apologies if they don’t. The links in the emails use QHM, and the first redirected when I checked it. The second two I have manually adjusted because the Royal Navy website went offline as I was editing this!
As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.
Let’s be careful out there.
