World Cup Football – 10th December

Come along to your club this Saturday, have a drink and cheer on England against France in the quarter finals, it should be a good game!

Tudor Christmas Row – 17th December

The normal Saturday morning row has been rescheduled to launch at 1pm. There will be a gentle row around the harbour, with a stop for refreshments, returning to the club at about 4pm.

The bar will be opened after the row and we will be inviting people to bring their own food along for an American supper. Please feel free to put your name down on sheets if you want to join the row or contact John, the rowing captain.

You are welcome to just come along to the club afterwards and join the party for food and drink if that is what you prefer. Get those Christmas jumpers ready!!

Rowers/sailors/kayakers/cruisers and partners are all welcome.

Charity curry evening and talk – 13th January

One of our members Ella Williams is going to be trekking Machu Picchu to raise money for a charity called Restless Development, all money raised from this event will go to the charity.

Local shipwreck discovery talk – 27th January

Alison and Martin of the SSAC have kindly offered to give a talk about a local shipwreck which they discovered and successfully identified. It sank on 7th June 1944, four miles from Portsmouth on her return from the Normandy beaches. An interesting yet poignant story.

The talk will start at 7 pm, we will be serving mozzarella chicken with potatoes and veg from 6pm. Please book on webcollect.

Charity Curry Evening and Talk

In August 2023 I will be trekking up Machu Picchu for 6 days to raise money for the charity Restless Development.

Will is entering the 2024 Global Solo Challenge, striving to be the first person to sail around the World with no fossil fuels onboard. His boat Echo Zulu, kept at Haslar marina, is equipped with the latest sustainable technology.

Hi everyone.

As Paul mentioned last week it’s always great to hear stories from members about your adventures and achievements on the water. It really helps encourage and inspire us all. Please keep them coming.

As you may know we have a club member, Kevin Watkins, who is about to embark on a trip of a lifetime rowing 3000 miles from La Gomera to Nelson’s Dock English Harbour in Antigua. Team Raring to Row will join 43 teams from 17 countries (that’s 127 nervous and excited souls) the largest fleet to date.

There’s plenty of ways to keep up with their progress and I list those below.

If you’d like to learn more about the children’s charity Kevin’s team is supporting, Action Medical Research, I also attach a link below and the JustGiving link. Tudor members have given generously to this worthy cause over the last few months (You’ll remember the amazing 24-hour row event arranged by Sue & John Elson to raise awareness and funds for the charity).Thank you again everyone for supporting research into curing and preventing childhood diseases.

As a final note, I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing all teams Fair winds and following seas when the race starts on the 12th December.

Coming Soon

I’m excited to get underway with the new marketing role. Over the years many of you have done so much to showcase our fantastic club and make it a friendly, inclusive place for new and existing members. I plan to utilise all those brilliant efforts as well as listen to all your new thoughts and feedback.

In January we’ll be launching more official YouTube content. This will be a place for prospective and existing members to visit and the content will range from informative to uplifting and be a place to advertise who we are and what we offer.

If you’ve got great racing or leisure footage please dig it out. If you’re out and about on the water over Christmas and film something great, please consider letting us use it. The designated ‘TSC marketing’ email will be ready hopefully for next week so I’ll let you know then where to send it.

I’m also on the lookout for members that would like to take part in a video montage about why they joined Tudor and what water activities they do. Class captains, time to get a nice hair doo as I’m coming for you in the new year to appear on screen

There’s a short article on the RYA website titled Stay Afloat all Year Round. A couple of interesting points it mentions are using a WhatsApp group to organise going afloat with others, and organising winter racing. That’s as good an excuse as any to draw attention to the WhatsApp groups we have (see below in the Diary Dates section) and the Frostbite and forthcoming Icicle series of races (again see the Diary Dates).

RYA wise again, they are supporting the Royal Life Saving Society UK’s Don’t Drink and Drown campaign. That seems pretty sound advice, more details can be found at: https://www.rya.org.uk/news/dont-drink-and-drown-this-december.

Cruiser Cradle Steel

Hi All Cruiser owners.

We have aquired a quantity of box steel. It is ideal material for making cradles. A well made cradle is an excellent asset both for the current owner and any prospective buyer. This steel is hot dipped galvanised so will need to be welded with health caution although it is best if most of the joints are bolted to allow for easy breakdown and storage.

The sections are laid by the gate at the south end of the main compound.

Please contact me (mob. 07775916077) if you want some as we do not intend to have this pile sat there gathering spiders and rats for very long. My thinking is that what isn`t “claimed” by the end of January will be disposed of.

Another piece from NCI Gosport (Coastwatch) this week. I note that we have some events listed for 2023 in the Diary Dates section, I’m not sure I’m quite ready for thinking about next year yet. That said, another event early in 2023 is the RYA Dinghy and Watersports show. It is in Farnborough on the 25th and 26th February. Two day tickets are available free to RYA members. There have been a couple of pieces in recent Tidal Diamonds from members about their experiences getting involved with club activities. Both have been from the rowing section, so I’ve thought (and it has been asked too) whether there is anyone who would be willing to write something similar about other club activities. Don’t worry if you are new to all this, everyone was new once and sharing your first experiences can encourage others to take the plunge (I’m hoping that’s a suitable term!).

On a related note, I attended the RYA Affiliate Club Conference the weekend before last, and there was very much a focus on understanding what constitutes value for money for members of different clubs, and ensures that they sign up for another year when renewal time comes. Another area of discussion was what motivates volunteers to get involved and put time and energy into helping clubs. That is an area that is particularly important to self help clubs like Tudor. If anyone has any thoughts I’d be interested to hear (he says with his RYA hat on, although that’s not to say it wouldn’t be of interest to the club as well). My email is rya.

Christmas Craft Day

A huge thank youto the social committee and volunteers for all their time and hard work with our Christmas crafting day and to all of you that attended, what a fun day. There is clearly some real artistic talent amongst you. I have attached some pictures of just a few of the items made on the day.

Communal Boat Planter

There has been the addition of a boat planter on the club house lawn. The boat has been dug into the lawn to ensure that it is stable and is almost ready for planting. This is where you come in, if you have any spare good quality top soil or compost then please fill in the cockpit of the dinghy. We are also after some keen gardeners to donate any spare plants they might have and plant them in the planter. Ideally we are after hardy plants that are pleasing to the eye.

I will round off this week with a piece about rowing from Bill Jones. It’s a good length, so don’t forget to keep going to the Diary Dates. If anyone else has any experiences they want to share send them through.

Never too old to row

Well something must have changed because what on earth has possessed me to set an alarm for 7 am on a Saturday when it’s only just getting light and it’s been raining.

Managed to creep out of the bedroom without making too much noise and get downstairs without disturbing the dog who now believes it’s breakfast time but he’s out of luck, if I feed him now he’ll want a walk and I have more important things planned. Putting on the wet weather gear and filling a flask I quietly shut the front door, get in the car and make my way to the club. You always think I’ll be first and have to unlock the gates, but this lot are keen and are already preparing boats and discussing where to aim for. As soon as all the crews had arrived with a rising tide of 4.6 metres and at least an hour or more till high tide Northney Marina with its café would be our destination.

Boats launched and yes the water is beginning to cool, we cut across towards the sea wall on the southern edge of Farlington marshes and began to warm up as a steady stroke developed, Navigator was powering ahead of us and Rosie following us at a similar pace. Now this is why it was worth getting up early as a young seal appeared behind Rosie and I’ve seen plenty of seals in the harbour but not so playful as this one jumping in and out of the water. The crew of Rosie stopped to take some video but so did the seal and upon restarting continued to follow until we had passed the small islands out into more open water by Bedhampton channel.

Making our way across to the gap where the old Hayling Billy line once was proved a lot more effort had to be put in as the wind pushed us towards the structure quickly pulling oars in to prevent the blades being damaged. Under the road bridge and now in the Lee of the shore the wind reduced and the rowing became easier as a small slipway appeared just to the north of the Marinia opposite the Royal Oak at Langstone.

Well they say many hands make light work, how true when lifting a gig up onto to shoreline then waking over to the café for a well earned hot drink and a chat.

Break over and back into the boats keeping our same positions this time having to use a cox to get under the bridge and though the gap as the wind had freshened, our row across to the channel more challenging as my oar kept digging into the larger waves. Calmer conditions as we passed into the gaps between the islands, some litter recovered from the reeds by Navigators crew and our friendly seal reappeared following close to Rosie.

Within a short while we were back at the club having enjoyed some strenuous exercise having not got too wet as the cloud had lifted and the rain much less than predicted. Boats all washed down, stored away, a welcome hot shower and another bag full of wet clothing to wash and dry at home.

I’ve been a member since 2000, my son and daughter joining with the sea scouts and my interest in boats being rekindled with the purchase of a Wayfarer which was only kept for a couple of years but more for pleasure as racing in not my thing. Our daughter had a topper and our son a lark, but powerboating interested him more so he joined the ECA owning a zap cat and a rib. The zap cat was exciting as speeds close to 46 knots were possible but the next day you felt as though a horse had repeatedly kicked you and my wife remarking don’t you think you’re a little to old for that.

We were offered an old cruiser, well at 18 feet almost a cruiser but not quite, £300 for the engine boat comes free! Her name Chippy soon nicknamed Crappy, as three full grown men on this small boat almost put us off owning a so called cruiser. Whilst my wife was recovering from a badly broken shoulder she uttered the words every man wants to hear, and before you jump to conclusions she actually said, you need a bigger boat. She scoured the internet and found it, an old westerly Centaur in good condition which the three of us have co owned for six years having shared the costs, work and most importantly the fun!

Of course the most fun is usually had over the winter scraping the barnacles off laying under the boat on pallets, and even better this year having to remove one of the keels to reseal it to hopefully stop a persistent leak.

One Sunday morning a few years ago the first gig was purchased causing maybe a little controversy but I was at the club to look at it and happy to endorse it, but at the time not ready to use it. Only this year did I feel that the time was right to give it a go so on a very windy Saturday morning I had my first introductory row at low tide trying to make our way just down to Broom buoy. A few more goes but maybe not as regular as I would have liked and then a Wednesday evening row to the ferry boat. This made me realise I wasn’t the only one who found it difficult to keep in time with whoever was setting the pace and that feathering the oar came with practice.

If like me you are unsure what rowing is all about I can definitely recommend having a go as you get lots of encouragement and get to take part at a level that suits you.

It’s not just about rowing and racing as the social get togethers are an important part of it and I’ve now realised that the harder you row the more beer you can drink, at least it’s an excuse I’m sticking with.

Well I could have left the story at that point but no, up again early and at the club on a Saturday morning to start at 8 am.

Quite a calm morning with a light breeze and setting of to the fairway with the aim of reaching the coffee cup on Southsea seafront seemed a reasonable challenge . The sun was now shining as we approached the fairway, then making good time to the Roway we stopped with the Coffee Cup in sight but then a call over the radio, how about going around the fort?. Ok came the reply so a quick drink of water and a steady pull out to the fort passing a small yacht struggling in the gentle swell almost becalmed. At last a rest in the lee of the fort and looking back at Langstone Harbour entrance that seemed a long way in the distance and my arms beginning to ache. Photos taken to prove to others we had actually made it then making our way around the fort heading inland and through the outer passage hoping for a coffee and something to eat. The next radio message was not well received as the conditions were unsuitable for landing on the beach so make your way to the Ferry Boat and we’ll stop there. Getting along the seafront was a bit bouncy and particularly in the entrance to the harbour and having rounded the post we were swept up to the pub in no time. Some crews went for a pint but we opted for a coffee and a bacon roll from the hut by the car park and I was reassured that all of the other rowers considered this quite a hard long row.

I received congratulations for having achieved a considerable distance for the first time and I remarked are you just trying to kill me off, which then appeared on the whats app group as Kill Bill part one, I replied you will have to try harder next time. I may regret saying that as it could be taken as a challenge but I think I might just give it a go!

TSC Photographic Competition

Thank you, we have already received some beautiful pictures for our competition.

The closing date for this month is the 21st, so you still have time to enter.

We will then be sending an email out to all members to vote on their favourite photos

Please send your entries to tscmedia

The winning picture will be displayed at the club, and be part of next years TSC calendar. Our chosen charity is the RNLI.

Christmas Craft Day – 12th November

This Saturday is our Christmas craft day.

Many of you will know that if you want to partake in a crafting event you will usually be paying around £45 an hour to do so, and that is just for one item!

We are offering a full day Christmas crafting for just £20 to members, where you can take home and proudly display all that you have made. Or just try your hand at creating one item for £5.

You will be able to make Christmas decorations for your tree, Christmas sweet pots, flanimals etc, we have 6 crafts for you to try, everything is provided for you.

You can even try your hand at creating cute fondant cake toppers, which proved to be very popular last year.

Tea or coffee and mince pie included.

We will take a break at lunch time when the galley will be open, which will be pay on the day.

Dinghy Update

Do you have a dinghy that you don’t really use anymore and would like to save some money?

If the answer is yes to the above then you may wish to consider selling your current boat and for the times you do want sail to use one of the many club boats that TSC own.

TSC currently has the following craft available for members to use either on a pay and play basis or by purchasing a subscription package.

• 1 x Topper Topaz
• 1 x Wanderer
• 1 x Wayfarer

How can I save?

The all dinghy boat package for 2022 was £100, that included access to all the club sailing boats as many times as you liked during the year (subject to availability). If you owned a Wayfarer sized dinghy (DXL) with an all year round dinghy space your TSC & LHB fees plus average insurance would have been approx £175+, so before you have taken maintenance costs and time into account you would have saved yourself £75 by not having your own boat.

I’ve had the following piece sent through from a relatively new member. It is always good to hear from members, particularly new ones, and even more particularly with such enthusiasm. Having introduced it I think I’ll just hand this section over to Dawn:

I can’t do it!

I joined the Tudor Sailing Club in June after attending the open day at the end of May 2022.

After getting in a gig for the first time I was hooked and could think of nothing else apart from the ‘next row’.

The rowing section was growing but the core group, seemed to me, to be very experienced, strong and capable, rowing long distances and taking part in lots of races….

I thought ‘I will never be able to do that’ and was just happy to get to the harbour entrance, all the while working hard to improve my stroke, rhythm and stamina.

I was away for most of September and when I returned I thought I would be back to square one…but something amazing happened! I rowed for the very first time to the Coffee Cup! no one was more shocked than me but a challenge I was delighted to have achieved.

Last Saturday I completed another challenge, rowing to the Fairway and back.

so anyone who thinks, as I did, I can’t do it….

YES YOU CAN!

TSC Photographic Competition

Calling all budding and keen photographers! I have seen so many amazing photos on the groups that I thought it would be a nice idea to start a competition. I hope some of you have been preparing after my heads up a few weeks ago.

Please send your photographs to tscmedia

These will then be judged by all Tudor members each month.

The winning photos will be displayed at the club, the idea being this time next year we would have 12 stunning photos, we could then create a TSC calendar to sell and make some money for charity. So ideally your photos will need to be centred around TSC and the harbour.

Rowing Update

Last Saturday morning a group of twenty people on five different Bursledon gigs decided to go to Northney Marina on Hayling Island for a fancy breakfast. The chirpy group left TSC slipway at about 8 am and headed south towards Sword Point, fighting against the current. They then flew up through Langstone Channel and safely made it through Hayling Island bridges, not without first calculating with extreme precision what the best route would be heading towards a yummy breakfast.

The group refuelled with sausage rolls, cakes, coffees, teas and hot chocolate and then the fleet headed back towards TSC through the marshes, making the most of some of the old (ehm, experienced) rowers’ knowledge of all the shallow hidden channels in the northern part of Langstone Harbour.

The five gigs arrived back at TSC just after 11, and the whole group was smiley and pleased with the achievement of a 13.8 km row (and, of course, the breakfast at Northney).

If anyone wants to join the rowing group, please send an email to rowing , new people are always welcome! Saturday morning rows are for more experienced rowers, new people will be gently introduced to rowing and can gradually work their way up to longer and more challenging rows. Be warned, it’s addictive!

Frostbite Series

The first race of the winter season starts this weekend with Frostbite 1. It is a 10.30am start from the clubline, the forecast at the moment is for a fair breeze so I am hoping this will drop a little before the weekend. Please note that wetsuits or dry suits plus a personal flotation device (aka buoyancy aid) must be worn for events between 1st November and 31st March. Cadet Sailing

Over the summer I worked with parents of cadets to get them back on the water. There may still be sessions on sunny days over the winter so if you have a child / children who are between 8 and 18 and would like them to take part then please drop me a message with your mobile number to be added to the group. Please note that these sessions are 100% parent led and only go ahead if there are enough parents to crew patrol boats etc. ALL parents that have children attending are expected to muck in to make the sessions a success.
