Dinghy Update

Do you have a dinghy that you don’t really use anymore and would like to save some money?

If the answer is yes to the above then you may wish to consider selling your current boat and for the times you do want sail to use one of the many club boats that TSC own.

TSC currently has the following craft available for members to use either on a pay and play basis or by purchasing a subscription package.

Dinghies

  • 3 x RS Tera
  • 2 x RS Feva
  • 1 x RS Quba
  • 1 x Topper Topaz
  • 1 x Wanderer
  • 1 x Wayfarer

How can I save?

The all dinghy boat package for 2022 was £100, that included access to all the club sailing boats as many times as you liked during the year (subject to availability). If you owned a Wayfarer sized dinghy (DXL) with an all year round dinghy space your TSC & LHB fees plus average insurance would have been approx £175+, so before you have taken maintenance costs and time into account you would have saved yourself £75 by not having your own boat.

If you would like more info on the TSC club boats then please look at the page on our website. If you would like some support selling a boat that you no longer use then please drop me a line.

I’ve had the following piece sent through from a relatively new member. It is always good to hear from members, particularly new ones, and even more particularly with such enthusiasm. Having introduced it I think I’ll just hand this section over to Dawn:

I can’t do it!

I joined the Tudor Sailing Club in June after attending the open day at the end of May 2022.

After getting in a gig for the first time I was hooked and could think of nothing else apart from the ‘next row’.

The rowing section was growing but the core group, seemed to me, to be very experienced, strong and capable, rowing long distances and taking part in lots of races….

I thought ‘I will never be able to do that’ and was just happy to get to the harbour entrance, all the while working hard to improve my stroke, rhythm and stamina.

I was away for most of September and when I returned I thought I would be back to square one…but something amazing happened! I rowed for the very first time to the Coffee Cup! no one was more shocked than me but a challenge I was delighted to have achieved.

Last Saturday I completed another challenge, rowing to the Fairway and back.

so anyone who thinks, as I did, I can’t do it….

YES YOU CAN!

If anyone wants to join the rowing group, please send an email to rowing , new people are always welcome!

Rowing Update

Last Saturday morning a group of twenty people on five different Bursledon gigs decided to go to Northney Marina on Hayling Island for a fancy breakfast. The chirpy group left TSC slipway at about 8 am and headed south towards Sword Point, fighting against the current. They then flew up through Langstone Channel and safely made it through Hayling Island bridges, not without first calculating with extreme precision what the best route would be heading towards a yummy breakfast.

The group refuelled with sausage rolls, cakes, coffees, teas and hot chocolate and then the fleet headed back towards TSC through the marshes, making the most of some of the old (ehm, experienced) rowers’ knowledge of all the shallow hidden channels in the northern part of Langstone Harbour.

The five gigs arrived back at TSC just after 11, and the whole group was smiley and pleased with the achievement of a 13.8 km row (and, of course, the breakfast at Northney).

If anyone wants to join the rowing group, please send an email to rowing , new people are always welcome! Saturday morning rows are for more experienced rowers, new people will be gently introduced to rowing and can gradually work their way up to longer and more challenging rows. Be warned, it’s addictive!

Another couple of intersting pieces from the RYA again this week:

  • British Sailing Team Meteorologist Simon Rowell talks us through the best places to find your weather forecasts online: https://youtu.be/GT11YYYrcJk
  • Have you suffered an entanglement this summer? Be sure to report it via the RYA website. Poorly marked or unmarked fishing gear can be a costly problem for recreational boaters. The RYA believe that fishing gear should be properly marked so that it is visible by both day and night. Reporting any incidents you are involved in will help us support boaters’ concerns and collate data that needs to be addressed. Find out more and report your entanglement: http://rya.org/XRHA50L8SPA

Frostbite Series

The first race of the winter season starts this weekend with Frostbite 1. It is a 10.30am start from the clubline, the forecast at the moment is for a fair breeze so I am hoping this will drop a little before the weekend. Please note that wetsuits or dry suits plus a personal flotation device (aka buoyancy aid) must be worn for events between 1st November and 31st March. If you have not already done so then please enter your boat via the sail event e-tally system. Link to the system and instructions are below.

Dinghy Reorganisation

Many thanks to everybody who helped with the reorganisation on Saturday. We managed to get through a lot of tidying up of the compound and made a start improving the surface at the north end.

The trees round the edge will be cut back on Monday and then everything put back into its winter space on Tuesday evening.

Recovery Weekend

Key reminders for recovery weekend:

  • The recovery briefing will be on Wednesday 12th October at 20:00. This is an important time that we use to plan the weekend, as well as briefing newer members and updating people on any new safety information.
  • Recovery weekend is Sat 15th/Sun 16th October. Saturday start time 06:00.

Please bring your blocks, clearly identified with your boat’s name, to the club before the weekend and put them inside the north gate.

Please do not park cars in the compound this week as we will be moving boats around during the week.

Note that the weather is forecast to be windy this weekend. There is a significant chance that recovery may take the whole weekend, or even spill into the following weekend if conditions dictate.

Early/Late recovery and relaunch

If you would like to be recovered or relaunched outside of the planned weekends, please let the bosuns know asap at bosuns_committee

In particular, please let me know if you plan to launch late next year, as moving late boats around causes significant extra work for the hoist drivers if we cannot plan this prior to recovery. We have only so far been notified of one late launcher.

Launch weekend is planned for 1st & 2nd April 2023, with a reserve of 8th & 9th.

Power Boat Training and Familiarisation – updated programme

The training and familiarisation programme for power boat duties has been revised. The aim of the update is to use our resources more effectively.

The objectives are to unlock the backlog of volunteers caused over the last few years by various circumstances, to give members better opportunities to fill their duty quotas, to fill the regular gaps in our calendar for this year and to reduce the chance for gaps in future years.

The programme now enables the following:

  1. Different routes to achieve sign off depending on experience and qualifications
  2. Making use of the skills and experience of existing trained helms and crew to contribute to the development of others
  3. Focusing the very limited resource of member instructors on sessions for those that would benefit most (new/nearly new to power boats) and the higher risk roles (new helms trained in-house)

Please refer to the attached flowchart for details. This only covers standard power boat helm and crew. Power boat assistance for cruiser lift in/out and driving the Committee Boat will be dealt with separately.

Complementing this programme will be a session run over the winter months in the club house. This is envisaged as fairly informal training/discussion event, that would include watching RYA DVDs/videos about topics such as capsize recovery and man overboard/casualty retrieval, sharing experiences and good practice. It will be a useful refresher for those who are trained but have limited recent on water experience of such circumstances and will also help those keen to progress. It will help us achieve more consistency and put us all in a better position to respond effectively and confidently if such circumstances arise. This will likely be on an evening and I will arrange refreshments to be available for purchase.

There are a few actions for you as a result of this programme update.

Firstly, if you are interested in power boat training (and haven’t already) please do submit your request via the club website. Go to the Members tab and drop down the menu to Request Training. Only apply for the relevant level. Then please email training to confirm your level of experience and any power boat qualifications (or confirm if not). Include specific training levels and dates of training and experience. We can then identify the appropriate route for you and find some dates.

Secondly if you are already trained and have volunteered for duties over the coming months – thank you – I may be in touch to assign you a buddy if I have a trainee lined up. They will shadow you for the prep for a race on land/join you on board for the event.

If you are trained and can be available to offer an on-land familiarisation session please email me with your dates and I can gather some interested people. We have floodlights so this could be on an evening, before or after a race, or on a date where the boats aren’t scheduled for use.

If you are an RYA qualified power boat instructor who has kept up to date with your logs and could help with training please email me.

All of the below will count as duty hours:

  • Volunteering as assistant helm or crew through this programme
  • Running a separate familiarisation session (buddying as part of your usual duty is already counted and won’t be doubled up)
  • Attending an organised training session

An important reminder: this programme is simply an in-house arrangement suitable for our particular club purposes. We don’t offer any formal qualifications. For these, we would recommend contacting our neighbours, the Andrew Simpson Watersports Centre. They offer discounts for Tudor members. https://andrewsimpsoncentres.org/activities/powerboating/.

Any questions please email me at training.

Thank you

A rowing item that I’ve had passed to me this week:

World Rowing Coastal Championships

Great Britain turned out in full force at the first Championships to be held in the British Isles, with 48 crews competing against 22 other nations in three days of exciting racing.

12 crews reached their respective A finals and a gold medal came from UL Tyrian Club in the coastal men’s coxed quadruple sculls (CM4X+).

Many of the crews came from established coastal rowing clubs, while others were novices trying their hand at the sport for the first time.

Find a full review of the GBR crews’ performance at:

Dinghy Activities This Weekend

This weekend sees the end of the main season of racing at TSC, it seems to have gone by in a flash as usual.

Saturday 8th October is the last of the Gould / Challenge series for 2022 starting from the club line at 10.30am

Sunday 8th October, there will be two short races back to back from the club line starting at 11.00am from which the following trophies will be awarded, Novice, Endeavour, Sophie Ludford. Please note that the Sophie Ludford is open to all members and will be decided by using the two races together. The Novice / Endeavour have various criteria to award them, please have a look on the website for full details.

Compound Re-org will take place on the afternoon of Saturday 8th so please make sure your boat label is legible, your tyres are pumped up and if you are going to sail in the winter you have let Colin (compound bosun) know. There will be some boats at the end that will have more tricky access so please only put your name down if you genuinely are going to be on the water. If you have gardening tools then please bring them so we can cut back brambles etc around the compound.

Dinghy End of Season Meeting – look out for a date for this in the near future.

Hannah Barnes
Dinghy Captain

Dinghy Reorganisation

Dinghy Reorganisation will be on Saturday 8th October at 13:30, after the race. We will be moving dinghies around to their winter positions and creating space for machinery to come in and cut the trees around the fence. We also plan to dismantle some of the old dinghy rack and bosun’s area, move the road trailers, do some gardening and lay tie-down chains, so there will be plenty to do. Dinghies for summer-only spaces can remain in the compound until the weekend of 15th Oct to participate in the final races.

Apologies to laser owners who found their boats moved at the weekend – we moved these around in order to work out what space we will have over the winter and I should have sent out a message to this effect.

Do remember to let me know if you intend to sail over the winter months.

Colin Thorpe

Recovery Weekend

Key reminders for recovery weekend:

  • The recovery briefing will be on Wednesday 12th October at 20:00. This is an important time that we use to plan the weekend, as well as briefing newer members and updating people on any new safety information.
  • Recovery weekend is Sat 15th/Sun 16th October. Saturday start time 06:00.

A reminder that all cruiser owners need to be at the club for the whole weekend to help with the many jobs that need doing.

Please let me know if you have a current first aid qualification.

Social Update

Calling all budding and keen photographers! I have seen so many amazing photos on the groups that I thought it would be a nice idea to start a competition.

Anyone that wishes to enter would send their photos in and they would get judged by all Tudor members each month.

The winning photos could be displayed at the club, the idea being this time next year we would have 12 stunning photos, we could then create a TSC calendar to sell and make some money for charity.

I just need to sort out the logistics, but I wanted to give you a heads up.

Recovery 15th/16th October

Please could you pre book your food to ensure you receive the meal you would prefer. Any cruisers willing to help in the galley could you please contact me, thank you.

Chang chang changitty chang sha-bop
That’s the way it should be
Wah-oooh, yeah!

Thankfully the lyrics will be on the screen!

Christmas Craft Day – 12th November

We have a full fun day of Christmas crafting planned, so please book your places, all ages welcome. You will be able to make Christmas decorations galore, baubles for your tree, candle holders, table decorations, gonks, etc. You can even try your hand at creating cute fondant cake toppers, which proved to be very popular last year.

You will get to spend around an hour on each craft, we will take a break at lunch time when the galley will be open, which will be pay on the day.

Christmas Craft Fayre – 18th November

If you would like a table please let me know, as we would like to offer them to club members first. This will be in the evening.

Central Heating Boost Switch

Hi All Tudor members,

There is now a manual override “Boost” switch fitted to the club central heating system, it is situated next to the light switches on the left as you enter the club foyer. Please see the attached picture. You have the option of 1/4, 1/2, 1 or 2 hours obviously depending on how long you expect to be there.

This is part of several system changes being implemented by the maintenance team at the behest of the club executive to ameliorate the recent massive rises in energy costs.

Please take extra care when using gas, water and electricity as club costs are rising quite dramatically.

Maintenance Officer

Oh, and a repeat of the quick reminder to cruiser owners coming ashore on the hoist that you should have an email with details of the subscriptions you need to renew using Webcollect; and don’t forget to order breakfast and lunch (link and details above in the Social Update).

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

If anyone is heading into Portsmouth Harbour before the end of the season (oh dear, it’s nearly here for some), the latest KHM LNtM gives details of some shoal patches in the entrance. More information at: https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/KHM/Portsmouth/Local-Notices/Navigational-Warnings/2022/2272

Important Dinghy and Cruiser information for recovery and winter storage

Tudor Sailing Club

There is a lot of demand on compound space this winter. Please read the following information and reply to me as needed at compound

Dinghies

Dinghy winter sailing
If you plan to sail over winter or need winter access for repairs, you must be added to a Winter Sailing List. Please email me to be added to this list.

We will be packing non-sailing dinghies into the north end of the compound to give us more space for cruiser lay-up.

We may also use the new patio area in front of the clubhouse as overflow for smaller dinghies.

Compound Reorganisation
This will take place on Saturday 8th October at 13:30 after the dinghy race. It is a good way to work off some maintenance hours.

Dinghy Maintenance
Please ensure that your dinghy is empty of water, has tyres pumped up and is unchained prior to the reorganisation. You are required to ensure that your dinghy space is kept tidy – weeds cut back etc.

Summer Only Spaces
If you have a summer-only space, please remove your dinghy prior to Compound Reorganisation on 8th October.

Cruisers

We have a number of additional cruisers to lay up this year, as well as the Divers’ equipment and a new tractor. As a result, we are planning to use a further row north in the compound for cruisers. The surface in this area is poor. We are looking at both short and long-term solutions to improve this, but we may be limited in what we can do this year.

Early/late recovery and relaunch
If you would like to be recovered early/late, or launched early/late next year, please let me know asap.

Recovery Weekend
Recovery weekend is Sat 15th/Sun 16th October.

Briefing
The recovery briefing will be on Wednesday 12th October at 20:00.

Relaunch
Relaunch is likely to be 1st & 2nd April 2023.

Help needed at recovery
We are looking for people to get involved in the various jobs that need doing for the weekend. If you want to help – particularly first aid, galley and water babies – please let me know. Just a reminder that all cruiser owners must attend both Saturday and Sunday.

Any questions – do let me or the bosun know.
