Cadets News

Hi everyone,

Delighted to say cadets is back for 2024.

If you’ve got kids or grandkids between the ages of 8 and 18 they are very welcome to come along and join the fun.

The sign up evening is May 8th 18:00 to 20:00 and the first on the water session will be May 15th at the same time.

If you have non member friends or family that you think would be interested please send them the poster attached as we have brilliant cadet membership rates and we offer intro sessions before they need to join as cadets. Don’t forget ASC offers discount on training for our cadet members.

And a big thank you in advance to all the parents of cadets that help the evening run smoothly.

For more information and any questions please contact me at cadets

Thanks.

Marketing & Advertising Update

Hi everyone,

Thank you to everyone that continues to ‘like’, share and comment on the club’s social media content. It really does make a difference to our community presence. Several community groups that promote local clubs and events have offered to advertise our events and our reach continues to grow. A big thank you for the photos too. Showcasing not just the ‘on the water ‘ events but also the fun moments of friendship and shenanigans really sets the tone and essence of our club. Please keep them coming. There are two ways you can continue to help in addition to supporting the social media content.

Open Day Advertising

Posters are available for the clubs annual open day. If you work in a local school, shop, or business and are able to display a poster please get in touch with me. Posters will be sent out to local schools and businesses this week but a personal touch is always better. Please do keep sharing social media about the day to your friends, family, and colleagues.

Business Cards

A few people have mentioned this to me. If you’re in a job where you find yourself chatting to customers or clients about the club and would like a handful of business cards to remind potential members of our email addresses and website, please get in touch with me. Our new Tudor business cards are being delivered in the next week or so and it would be helpful to know what volume of stock I need to keep.

See you on the water.

Family & Friends Friday – May 3rd

Please join us for an evening of Sea Shanties with Jim Splice and the Mainbrace. The bar will be open from 6.30pm and the shanties, hornpipes, jigs, and reels from 7pm. Feel free to bring your supper or a takeaway and make an evening of it with your friends, family, and fellow pirates.

Our Club, Our Success

We are delighted to see a packed ‘on the water’ calendar for our 75th year. The club wants to support as many on the water events as we can with food afterwards. However it simply can’t happen without more galley support. We need people who like to cook, or BBQ, put together ploughman’s, co-ordinate ‘bring a board’, bake, serve, wash up etc. In short, on the water events will need more co-ordinators and contributors if you’d like food provided after your events.

Our club, our success …

Please contact me asap to let me know how you can contribute.

Thank you

Kayak News

Basingstoke Canal trip

We are hoping to put on a kayak trip to Basingstoke Canal and currently canvassing opinion on the 18 or 19th May dates.

There’s a poll on the WOW and Paddlers WhatsApp groups but you can also e-mail terrijohnson@btinternet.com to express a preference on dates and confirm if you are able to transport your kayak and/or help others.

Monday paddle in company

Weather permitting 😎 the Monday paddle in company sessions have begun again so we hope as many of you can join us as possible for some informal and fun times on the water. Keep an eye on the paddle/wow WhatsApp groups for weather updates but generally we aim to launch by 6pm.

  • PB Ins. 5th – 8th May

There was a recent Practial Boat Owner article published on their website about checking your shore power cable and the dangers it can present. Not only an interesting read for cruiser owners, but also relevant to extension cables used in the compound. You can read it at: https://www.pbo.co.uk/news/warning-to-check-the-shore-power-cable-every-time-you-plug-it-into-your-boat-86163

To round off I’m going to do both a plug and a callout for the social committee. On Wednesday last week they provided a fantastic spread for the PLSA AGM that was hosted at Tudor. So first, a big thank you to Inga et al. for representing the club so well and providing the food and bar cover. Secondly, and I had a great chat with Inga about this, as per the Social New section above, we need volunteers to help fun club events. It covers your club duty as well as being enjoyable and, for newer members, a great way to get to know the club and other members. Volunteers are the life blood of Tudor, and what make it such a great club to be a member of.

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds always most welcome.

Spring Clean

Many thanks to everybody who took part in the Spring Clean on Saturday. We made a real difference to the look of the club, not least filling a skip to overflowing with accumulated junk. It was excellent to coincide this with the Wombles Cup, which half-filled the skip with rubbish from the harbour before we’d even started!

There are a few jobs left that didn’t get finished – let Jane or me know if you can help with these.

  • Dust the upper parts of the clubhouse using stepladders and hoover up fallen debris – will need 2 people in order to work safely
  • Jet-wash canopy and other painted areas in the patio area; clean out gutters etc.
  • Deep clean gents changing rooms – floor jet-washer available.

New Roles

I’m very pleased to welcome Katrina Hedger-Noyce as our new membership secretary, and Terri Johnson as our Kayak Captain.

Katrina joined the club late last year and is already looking forward to enjoying the summer on her cruiser. As a newish member she brings fresh ideas and enthusiasm to the role of welcoming new members and making their orientation as easy as possible.

Terri is very keen to encourage people onto the water, paddling in company – you may have seen her posting on WhatsApp already for evening paddling. Please do contact her if you want to get involved in Kayaking at Tudor.

I want to say a huge thank you to Steve Woodbridge who has been our membership secretary for over three years. Many of you will know him as the first person you spoke to when joining the club. He has implemented strong process within the role and been the knowledgeable and welcoming face of Tudor. Steve will be continuing his role on the rowing sub-committee.

Wombles Cup

Saturday saw the running of the rowing section’s ‘The Wombles’ Cup, our once a year litter picking event via water!
16 volunteers in 4 gigs headed out for 3 hours to scour foreshores around the harbour at high tide to help with access. There was some good news, a few of the areas checked had very little rubbish but there was a lot picked up from others!

Some of the stranger items recovered included a shopping trolley, a car stereo and some artificial lawn!
Winners of The Wombles Cup were team Freedom given the sheer quantity they picked up! well done to them
We’re now starting to build a picture up of where we need to concentrate on next year and will be looking out for rubbish as normal on our rowing trips out

Friendly Friday

Record turnout for the First Friendly Rowing Evening of The Season

Thank you to all those involved with the organisation of last Fridays Friendly Rowing evening and to all those who took part. Thanks to their efforts the Tudor Friendly Rowing Race Nights are now a high point in the local rowing calendar with rowers from 8 local clubs attending last Friday’s event.

This month saw a record turnout with 56 rowers and coxes taking part with many more coming along to enjoy the fun, drink beer, and devour the excellent food from the galley.

At the end of the evening the trophies were presented by Paul Rivington with congratulations going to the winning crew of Rory Goodenough and Nikki Rivington from TSC, and Stuart from Emsworth Slipper Sailing Club. Inga Lambert and Kirsty Stark were awarded the VIPER trophy, in recognition of the great work that they did in organising the offering from the galley. However, the top prize of the wooden spoon (beautifully crafted by Yvonne Adams) was awarded to the crew that recorded the slowest time, this was Kean from Hamble River Rowing, Dave from Langstone Cutters Rowing Club, and Maggie Hodge from TSC, who together with a number of other boats managed to get themselves stuck on a mudbank at the edge of Broom Channel during the 2nd race.

The Friendly Friday rowing races are usually held on the last Friday of every month (the next one being on Friday 31st May) between April and the end of August and all Tudor members are invited to come along and join the fun, either as a rower or spectator.

If you are not already in the rowing group but would like to take part next month then please email me at rowing@tudorsailing.org.uk and I will add you to the list of rowers, or arrange an intro row, if you would prefer a try-out first. If you want to spectate then please feel free to just turn up, although if you want to eat then please make sure you pre-book this on WebCollect.

Rowing is fun at Tudor!

Commodore’s Update

First of all, a huge thank you to everyone that contributed to the Cruiser launch on Saturday. I’m delighted to report it went without a hitch. There are so many people who contribute and your hard work, in whatever capacity, whether large or small is appreciated. Thank you to each of you.

There are a few Cruisers still to launch over the next few weeks, so please be vigilant of boat and tractor movements when in the compounds and using the slipway.

Can cruiser owners also ensure they remove their blocks from the compound before the spring clean on Saturday April 6th. On that note it would be wise for all boat owners to remove any possessions lying near or around their boats to avoid anything important being thrown away during the spring clean.

You’ll have seen lost property mentioned on the WhatsApp groups. There’s plenty of it still unclaimed. Please do check the lost property pile before Saturday 6th April as anything left will be disposed of.

Sunday 7th April – Easter Egg hunt

Bring your little sailors, rowers and paddlers on Sunday for some Easter Sunday fun. We’ll be kicking off an Egg Hunt at 11am followed by some party games and prizes. 90 minutes of fun for £4 which includes a chocolate egg, hot cross bun and squash. Bring your children, grandchildren, and friends and family welcome with their children.

It’s a shore side event nobody gets wet (unless it rains) but look out for the naughty shark that’s come ashore to steal the eggs from the Easter Bunny.

Please book all children on WebCollect so no one is left disappointed. And please note adults must stay and supervise children during this event.

Happy Hunting 🦈🦈

Saturday 6th April – The Wombles Cup

Don’t forget to pop down to the club on Saturday even if you’re not out on the water.

Once the rubbish collection has finished, the spring clean will be starting and we’ll have plenty of tea/coffee, and Sausage / Bacon baps on sale to keep you going.

Milly Lindup’s Story

Explore the latest updates from the Portsmouth Sail Training Trust, where we share inspiring stories, important announcements and celebrate successes.

Milly Lindup’s Story

Milly is 17, lives with her Mum and 4 younger siblings. She studies at college and works part time for the Andrew Simpson Centre Portsmouth as a watersports instructor.

When Milly was 11 years old, she was a keen swimmer, training 6 hours a day, before and after school. Although she loved swimming, it was exhausting and taking up all her time and energy. In addition, she was really struggling at school academically and with friendships, and her mental health wasn’t good.

One of Milly’s teachers suggested that she try the PSTT program. Milly was a bit cautious about it, as she had never done any watersports other than swimming, but she decided to give it a go.

When Milly started the program she was nervous, as some of the other students were older and had experience of sailing and doing other watersports. However, the instructors at PSTT were great and helped her realise her potential. She loved the two-year PSTT program and fell in love with watersports, particularly windsurfing.

Milly was then selected for a winter windsurf training program. This involved windsurfing training and competitions. In 2022, Milly was selected for the international competition – the Windsurfing Europeans and competed in Sardinia and loved it!

As soon as she turned 15, Milly started volunteering at ASC Portsmouth and trained over the summer to be an Assistant Dingy and Windsurfing Instructor. This was all part of the Charitable Programs at ASC Portsmouth and was funded by the ASF.

When Milly turned 16 she did her Windsurfing Instructor qualification, followed by her Dingy Instructor course a few months later. Since then, Milly has been working part-time as an instructor at ASC Portsmouth, coaches for the RYA windsurfing Regional Training Group and is doing a two-year diploma in Sports Coaching and Development.

Milly likes teaching the younger kids and people her age mostly.

‘Some young people give up easily, but that’s due to fear. I was just like that! I just take them back to basics and reassure them that they will be able to do it in time, and they can.

One of the Young people I am coaching for the RYA I actually taught to windsurf from scratch when he was really young! Now he’s 11 and is training for competitions. I feel proud of this. It’s nice working with the younger sailors. They get excited and feel proud of themselves when they achieve something, and that is rewarding. It’s like I’m giving back for what people did for me and gave me.

I would say to young people struggling at school: give it a go, trust the instructors. I struggle to trust people, but here (PSTT and ASC Portsmouth) they’re so good and help you all the way.

When Milly finishes her college course, she hopes to gain full-time employment as a watersports instructor to help young people get out on the water, just like she did.

We couldn’t be prouder of Milly and everything she has achieved over the past 6 years; she has worked so hard to get to where she is and has achieved it all so quickly at such a young age.

Milly couldn’t have done this without the support of the instructors who taught her and without the funding that enabled her to do the PSTT program and then the ASC charitable programs.

It is essential that we keep supporting amazing young people like Milly to realise and their potential and follow their dreams.

Cruisers

There will be a Launch Briefing on Wednesday 20th March at 7:30pm. We plan to talk through how to set up tows, and also chat about what’s in store this year for the Cruiser Section. Please make every effort to attend.

Cruiser Launch will begin at 0600 on Saturday. All cruiser owners, whether launching are not, are expected to be at the club from 0600 to assist with the launch. This has long-since been part of the deal for having a cruiser at Tudor.

Slipway

The slipway will be closed from 0600 on Saturday for cruiser launch, and through Sunday until notified.

Note that there is a plastic cover missing from the edge of the slipway. Do take care.

Lost Property

There is a lot of lost or abandoned property at the club. We are having a Spring Clean day on Saturday 6th April for which we’re hiring a skip and will be disposing of anything left around the club. Please do claim any lost property over the next couple of weeks – this will be left in the patio area of the clubhouse.

Roles

We have found a new member for the social committee. Yay! We are still looking for people for the following roles. Please do consider these – it’s a great way to become more involved in the club and to get your duty hours completed. These are open to new members as well as those who have been around for longer.

  • Maintenance Committee Member
  • Dinghy Sub-Committee Member

I’m delighted everyone enjoyed the food on Saturday. It was brilliant to see so many people at the club and thank you to Dawn, Sue C and Rachel R for helping in Galley, Ladina And Chris C for cooking the delicious chilli.

The link to order food for the Cruiser Launch is below. Ordering in advance really helps us plan and avoids waste. Thank you to the many people contributing to the menu.

I’ll be posting details about the Easter Egg Hunt on WhatsApp shortly.

To echo Steve’s information about The Womble Cup on 6th April, please come and join in if you can. We will be serving tea, coffee and food after we all back to the club. I will be posting details of refreshments very soon on WhatsApp groups.

Wombles Cup

The Wombles Cup was a huge success at the club last year and we’re delighted that it’s back on April 6th. We’ll be taking to the local waters using only people powered vessels to litter pick from the water and foreshore. Only 3 hours allowed and the most coveted trophy is up for grabs.

This year we’re excited that the club has been accepted officially into The Wombles Community via The Wombles Community Charity. This means we’re joining clubs and communities all over the UK helping to preserve our local environment.

If you plan to row the event please reserve your seat in the normal way, Kayaks also welcome and really suited to shallower areas. Dinghies can access certain spots so please do get in touch if you’d like to join in. Or just pop in for a drink and to see our haul.

Tudor Rowing Winter Series 2024 Hailed a Resounding Success

Rowers from across the 3 Harbours descended on Tudor again last Saturday for the final race in its Rowing Winter Series.

Ten Bursledon gigs powered by 45 crew raced, in perfect conditions, a 4.3 Nautical Mile course from the club line to Alpha and back via the Irishman isolated danger mark. Being the final race in the series, the competition was fierce, and in the end, only 26 seconds separated the first two places with Lady Jane coming over the line first closely followed by Navigator with Crazy Daisy in third place.

Following the race the handicap calculations were applied and the race officer announced that it was a dead heat between 3 boats for the winners of the handicap trophy and that therefore a race-off to the Broom Bouy and back would be held to determine the winner. Having already showered the three crews involved were dragged screaming from the clubhouse and pressed to their boats.

To ensure a level playing field the rules for the race-off were that all three boats had to be rowed randan i.e. crewed by 3 rowers. Cheered on by the other competitors the rowers strained their aching muscles against the oars and took to the challenge head-on. In the end, it was Lady Jane who triumphed with Friendship coming in second and Rosie in third place.

With any uncertainties resolved the final results for the series were announced as:

  • Overall Winner – Lady Jane
  • Fastest Boat on cumulated time – Lady Jane
  • Fastest boat on handicap (vets average age over 55) – Friendship

Congratulations go to the winning crews and a big thank you goes to all those involved in organising and supporting the event, which was hailed as a great success by those involved. With the guest crews from Dell Quay Sailing Club, Chichester Yacht Club, and Hamble River Rowing vowing to return next year for a rematch.

Back in the club after the race, all competitors enjoyed some excellent food from the galley, with liquid refreshments from the bar whilst the 6 Nations rugby was showing on the big screen.

If you think that you would like to give gig rowing a go, then why not sign up for one of the club’s intro row sessions which are held at 11 am every Saturday until mid-April after which they will be held at 6 pm on a Tuesday. These free 1hr taster sessions are organised to suit the rower’s ability and are great fun. If you would like to book one, then simply email me at rowing.

Rooster Customised Clothing

If you wear Rooster clothing and would like customised kits for your wardrobe, there are available items via this link.

https://www.roostersailing.com/collections/rooster-highlights-custom-kit

At the moment it’s only our new TSC logo but we plan to add logos for each section over the coming weeks to their website.

Naturally you are not required to wear or buy Rooster. (Although the club will benefit financially in a small way by each purchase). You can, of course, buy and customise kit of your choice with any approved TSC logo.

We hope to see Rooster supporting us at this year’s 75th birthday Regatta and Tudor Challenge.

To round off this week’s Tidal Diamond a couple of quick reminders for the weekend:

Tractor Movements

Please note that we will be launching a number of cruisers during this week to reduce the number needing to be done over launch weekend. Please take care when using the compounds and slipway, and follow the instructions of banksmen who are there for your safety.

The slipway will be closed from 0600 Saturday morning until cruiser launch is complete.

Cruiser Launch Food

For everyone working on Cruiser Launch the menu is now available to book on web collect. A huge thank you to everyone who has contributed to this. A fabulous collaboration of members new and less new (not older ☺) for our 75th year.

…and finally a link to a talk run by Chichester Harbour Conservancy about Saltmarsh Habitats. I couldn’t attend but am quite pleased to have the chance to watch the recording here: https://www.conservancy.co.uk/saltmarsh-habitats-a-talk/.
