Sailing Calendar

The dinghy sailing calendar for 2021 has now been published. The first dinghy race is planned to be held on Sunday 11th April with a start time of 11:30. The events marked T.B.C are events that we hope can go ahead but may not due to the current pandemic and having to share slipways for this sailing season. If you are planning to taking part in this or subsequent races during the season then you will need to sign up via Sailevent https://sailevent.net/enter/TUDOR. This is the same system that we used last year and, like last year, you need to register for every race series before the day of the race. If you need a refresher of how to register then please refer to the attached guide or failing that please feel free to email me.

Rowing News

Until two years ago he had never rowed a stroke, but now club member Kevin Watkins is currently in training for one of the most gruelling events in the worldwide sporting calendar.

A 3,000-mile plus odyssey starting in the Canary Islands and finishing (hopefully) in the Caribbean.

Kevin and co are fundraising for national charity Action Medical Research’s Born Too Soon campaign, which aims to highlight the impact premature birth has on babies and their families and to help fund research that can save lives.

Read more about the amazing adventure they’re planning here:

Waiting for the Tide

If you look below in the Diary Dates section you will notice some activity on the dinghy racing side of things, the full calendar is on the website, and it is mentioned above too… I won’t mention it here for fear of tempting fate though.

On the cruiser side of things I hope everybody is putting their plans together for the short-ish window between being able to get to the club and losing access to the slip. I’ve got my list of essential jobs down the bare minimum needed to get afloat – 1. slap a coat of anti-fouling on; 2. check mooring; 3. test engine; 4 splash (well, perhaps more thud… pause… lap, lap… off we go!).

Here’s looking forward to a sailing season.

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address if you feeling isolated and cut off from the world. It is always nice to hear from members, and any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Stay safe.

A Quirky Quiz

Sadly we have not had such a good response from members as we did for bingo.

I would therefore like to give members a bit of a nudge – to support our club (and the efforts of the social committee) by joining in an hour or so of fun quizzing.

We have chosen the best rounds from our collective quiz experiences and repertoires in order to make it a really fun experience.

A big thank you to those who have already signed up but we’d really like to see a few more teams. It’s easy to join in, just email social secretary.

Waiting for the Tide

A couple of items here this week. Firstly, this piece caught my eye given the amount of discussion there has been at PLSA and LHB Advisory meetings about the discharges from Southern Water into the harbour, and how to get more detail on the impact and how to stop, or at least reduce them. I’m sure for most it wouldn’t have been the word Langstone in the headline that caught their eye first, but to read more on “Warning over Langstone Harbour shrimps’ low sperm count” head to: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-56326120.

The other item is a link that may be of use. I’m sure my app used to give me tide times further than a week ahead, but having just been trying to find a tide time in April without having to sign up for a service I may not use again (I’ll get some tables when I’m back in the world again!) I found that Southsea Marina have them on their website: https://www.premiermarinas.com/Tides-Weather-Forecast/Southsea-Weather/Southsea-Tides

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address if you feeling isolated and cut off from the world. It is always nice to hear from members, and any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Sally Turner is running the 2021 Virgin London Marathon for PSTT

Sally Turner is running the 2021 Virgin London Marathon for PSTT

The Andrew Simpson Foundation’s Marketing & Communications Manager, Sally Turner, will be running the London Marathon to raise funds for the PSTT.
Sally is hoping to raise £1,500 for PSTT. To show your support for Sally and the work of PSTT, head over to Sally’s fundraising page to donate: https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/SallyTurner18. Here’s what she had to say about the event:

“I am running the London Marathon for Portsmouth Sail Training Trust, a Charity working to raise young people’s aspirations though maritime training.

My Story

I’ve been messing about on boats in the Solent since the age of 3. From age 5, my little brother and I used to embark with our parents on what I remember as cold, wet but exciting adventure day trips over to the Isle of Wight on our 14ft “Lark” sailing dinghy “Tuskar Terror”.

By the time I was 10, my parents chartered navy yachts 2 or 3 times a year and we were lucky enough to sail all over the Solent area from Chichester Harbour, to Poole and Studland Bay. Our biggest adventure was to the Channel Islands – sailing back in a near Hurricane just to make it to school the next day after the holidays!

It wasn’t until the age of 13, that I finally attended my first ‘official’ dinghy training course at Whale Island in a “Topper”. I now realise how a sense of adventure was deeply rooted in me by some incredible and challenging experiences from a young age. How fortunate I was to have the opportunity to develop practical skills, confidence and most importantly independence through my experience on the water (although I didn’t think so at the time!). I went on to study Marine and Freshwater Biology.

Why I am running for PSTT

I am now working for PSTT (amongst other organisations) as part of my job. PSTT is an incredible charity which is run solely by dedicated volunteers, with the support of the Andrew Simpson Foundation. PSTT enables young people from all walks of life to gain maritime qualifications, develop key life skills and raise their aspirations with all potential barriers removed. PSTT’s work is now more important than ever following the impact Covid-19 has had, and continues to have, on our young people. A donation of £25 would enable 1 young person to attend a PSTT session.

I know, from my own experiences, the thrill of learning to sail in Portsmouth Harbour and the life-long confidence it brings to self-belief and ability alone. I am now so excited (and a little nervous!) to take on another personal challenge and run the London Marathon and couldn’t be more proud to do this in support of such a great charity, helping more young people realise their full potential as I did.

The marathon is taking place on Sunday 3rd October and I will be updating this page with information about my training over the next few months. Updates will also be posted on the PSTT facebook page so do take a look: https://www.facebook.com/PortsmouthSTT.

I have never run a marathon before and know that this is going to be a big challenge for me, especially having three young children at home myself, often accompanying me for training runs on their bikes! Any donation, not matter how large or small, will really spur me on by making a huge difference to the lives of many young people of Portsmouth.

Thank you!”
