Sailing Calendar Update

Since the release of the sailing calendar, I have a few updates and important notes. The first is that spring series 1 has now been updated to include the coffee pot trophy. The second is that the current calendar that has been released is the bare bones of what we hope to run this year. It is hoped that some more races can be held while keeping to government covid regulations. At the moment we are looking at adding in a couple of sunset races and will confirm this in a later tidal diamond. We will also restart friendly Fridays once the sailing club bar can reopen. But in the meantime, there is always the WhatsApp group to enable you to sail in company over the easter weekend. If you’re not already part of the group, then email me with your mobile number and I can add you.

Waiting for the Tide

I’ll turn this section over to some input I’ve had over the past week.

Firstly something from Paul Megson that, as a BDMLR Marine Mammal Medic, I wholeheartedly support. One of the wonderful things about Langstone is the way wildlife, leisure and commercial activities manage to coexist. It doesn’t just happen though, it does take some work form harbour users, as well as often unseen work from the likes of RSPB, LHB, Friends of Langstone and others.

Harbour Seals

You may have heard of the tragic fate of “Freddie Mercury”, the harbour seal which had taken up residence in the Thames near Hammersmith Bridge and was entertaining passers-by. Freddie had to be humanely destroyed following a dog attack recently.

We have our own family of harbour seals which can often be seen at low tide hauled out beside the Broom channel. Please observe the advice provided by the Langstone Harbour board in their leaflet which can found on their website at https://c0b702f3-80cf-45f6-850c-35efda39c118.filesusr.com/ugd/456e50_fc571a1ceb0d45989f6397c60ca8ccaf.pdf

A key piece of advice is: do not approach them, or disturb them. Remain at least 100 metres from them (so pass them on the other side of the channel at low tide). Upsetting or alarming them could have tragic consequences for them.

Paul Megson

Secondly, an attachment from Naomi Langford. This is something originally intended for Ebb & Flow and goes back to 2019, which seems like a lifetime ago. It looks back on a great 2019 season of WoW. Hopefully there will be opportunities weather and restrictions wise for a good season this year.

If anyone else has any reminders of good times past to share, or over the coming season some good times present, send them through and they can be shared in a future Tidal Diamond or Ebb & Flow.

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address if you feeling isolated and cut off from the world. It is always nice to hear from members, and any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Stay safe.
