Dinghy Sailing Update
We still have gaps for duties on Dutyman for races in the next month. If you are trained up and are willing to do the duties, then please volunteer via Dutyman. Some of these duties are for the Forts and Fairway race in May that was previously marked as T.B.C. but is now going ahead. Thank you to those who have already volunteered to be on the patrol boat or race officer. This has enabled a good return to dinghy racing with a healthy turn out so far.

Waiting for the Tide
Some of us are on the water now, and some are (hopefully) nearly there, so this week a couple of bits of information that may be of use to those afloat.
Firstly from a LHB LNtM (05 of 2021 which can be read in full here as a PDF). To sumarise, the University of Portsmouth Institue of Marine Sciences have laid some ‘Ortac’ native oyster trestles in Russel’s Lake. It is part of a project looking at reducing nutrient levels. They have been deployed on drying mud approx. 1.2m above Chart Datum and sit approx. 0.5m above the bed. They will be submerged for around 8 hours each tied and will be marked by two yellow marker bouys. Mariners are advised to keep 5m clear from these marker buoys and not pass between them.
This next link is to an article on the local News website, ‘System failure’ meant Southern Water discharged wastewater six times in one day into Langstone Harbour‘. Those six don’t include the one notified today. Having been working on this on LHB for some years it is nice to actually get some coverage, but it is frustrating how high up you have to go to get anything done. Both local councils are now taking some interest and it will be interesting to see what impact, if any, the May elections have on this.
Southern Water have now set up, and are improving, their Beachbuoy system for information on discharges. You can find that at: https://www.southernwater.co.uk/water-for-life/our-bathing-waters/beachbuoy. I’ve also added it to the links below. There is also a separate email notification that has replaced the one from LHB. If you want details of that one let me know.
As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address if you feeling isolated and cut off from the world. It is always nice to hear from members, and any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.
Stay safe.
