Cruising in France ?

New form to be submitted Since the end of the Brexit transition on 31 December 2020, sailors have had to sail to one of a small number of Ports of Entry, mainly ferry ports, and search out the relevant authorities (usually the Police aux Frontieres) to register the arrival of their boat and crew. This same process has been necessary before departing France for the UK, Channel Islands or any non-Schengen country.

Low Water Cruise

Saturday is another Low Water Dinghy Cruise, sailing within the harbour. We still need a patrol boat crew for this event to go ahead though.

There will be a briefing at 10am on the grass, by the race box steps. The plan is to launch around 10.30, so be at least partially rigged before the briefing. Please remember that current guidelines state the toilets can be used, but not the changing rooms.

It will be a gentle sail down the harbour with the outgoing tide, aiming to land near the Ferry Boat Inn. Hopefully it will be nice enough to have an ice cream from the cafe, so don’t forget to bring a mask and money. If the beach is looking too busy, and there’s not enough space for us to land, then we might just stop off at Sword Sands.

Sword Sands Family Paddle Postponed

Hi all, when originally planned I had not realised it was Father’s Day. With this in mind I will rearrange the family paddle to enable more to attend. Keep an eye on the website for the new date.

Sailing Duties

The following sailing duties due in the next two weeks need volunteers: –

There are also 20 further duties required before the end of July.

Membership Details in Sailing Dutyman

If you have a Sailing Dutyman login, can you please login in and on the ‘profile page’ enter your membership number and check the ‘Expected Number of Duties’.

The membership number is a new field and has been added to help with processing of duties done and to allow entries to be removed when members leave the club. The number of duties is used to establish if we have coverage for the number of planned events.

When I have asked for this by email through Dutyman, only 23 of the 74 people have updated their entries. This potentially leads me to conclude that either the other 50 email address are invalid, or that all these members have left the club!

Your support in the action is appreciated.

Rowing Race Night at Friendly Friday

Last Friday the rowing section held their first club race night. An informal affair with friendly races up and down Broom. (Some more competitive than others ?)

It was a great opportunity to mix the usual crews up a bit and have some fun. The rowing section has, not just seasoned rowers, but sailors, paddlers, and some wonderful youngsters to keep us on our toes.

So I’m delighted to announce that the June champions are … Drum roll….

Ian, Daniel and Will

Two under 18’s and an OAP (now I’m in trouble)

Well done chaps, and thank you to the rowers that organised a friendly, supportive evening.

We hope to run an informal race night every month, weather and government restrictions permitting and dates are on the calendar. If you’ve not rowed before and fancy joining us get in touch so we can arrange some intro rows for you ahead of the night. Of course you don’t have to row, just come and watch/chat if you’d prefer.

Attached is a picture of our June winners.

Excited to see if we can knock the champions off that top spot in July.

Guppy Unchained and the Jester Challenge

As a few people may be aware, I have been keen on the Jester Challenge concept, and over the last number of years have participated in three Jester Baltimore Challenges to Baltimore (strangely) in West Cork via the Fastnet Rock, and one ‘Mocker’ Challenge, which was a bootleg event organised by a number of individual Jesters to La Corunna in north Spain during the last main Jester Challenge (Plymouth to Newport RI) in 2018. I’ve completed the Jester Baltimore Challenge twice in Guppy Unchained, and once, in 2015, in her predecessor Guppy Rides Again, a First 21 (using sheet to tiller steering which was interesting – and tiring). I did the Mocker in Guppy Unchained. Ultimately I’d quite like to do the ‘proper’ challenge which is to Newport in the States. Crossing the Atlantic is relatively easy, but crossing by the north route in a small boat isn’t! However, that may be for the future.

This year I’m hoping to participate in the Jester Azores Challenge, and have just arrived in Plymouth to make the final preparations prior to departure next weekend. If anyone is interested in following my progress or lack thereof, I can be tracked via Yellowbrick and will be writing an occasional blog. I’ve got the Tudor Burgee flying proudly and hope I can do it justice. I have already started the blog and it can be found here:

Once I’m out of 4G coverage I won’t be able to post photos but will be able to, hopefully, post anything interesting once back in 4G range. I will be transmitting positions every two hours and short updates via text; short because it will be via the Iridium network which is expensive to use ………

Waiting for the Tide

Well if you are still reading I should probably keep this short and let you take a break, or get out on the water! I will, however, briefly note that the Southern Water Beachbouy system has recently been updated and you can now subscribe to locations via email to get updates. This is only for the bathing locations, which does in fact include Langstone Harbour, but if you visit the site you can see the outfall locations with details of timeframes of any recent releases. The link is below, but to save the scroll down it is: https://www.southernwater.co.uk/water-for-life/our-bathing-waters/beachbuoy.

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address. No need to be feeling isolated and cut off from the world to do so, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Let’s be careful out there.
