Dinghy Sailing This Week

This Friday is Friendly Friday with a high water time of 5:04pm. If you are wanting to go out for a sail but would like to do so in company then drop a message in the dinghy WhatsApp group. If you are not on the WhatsApp group then drop me an email with your phone number to dinghies.

Saturday is the in harbour cruise which I will be leading. The rough plan depending on weather is to explore up the main channel, hopefully as far as Stoke, before turning around and stopping for lunch on Sword Sands. I will hold a short briefing by the shipping container at 9:30am before we take boats around to the slipway to launch.

Monday is race 4 of the sunset series and we still need a patrol boat helm and race officer. If you are trained up then please volunteer via Dutyman in good time.

Rowing Race Night

Thank you to everyone that made our second race night of the summer a great success.

Initially there were smiles when some thought the course was shorter due to launching from a different slip. This quickly turned to groans when no such leniency was shown . Three strong heats and a hard fought final saw John, Daniel and Josh take the trophy. Well done chaps. Fish, chips and a beer finished off the evening brilliantly.

Look out for news on the August race night as everyone is welcome. If you haven’t rowed in a while or are new to rowing book in on an intro session via the email below. There’s still time before the August event to get race ready. Of course if you’d prefer to just eat supper and cheer us on that would also be great.

Waiting for the Tide

It looks to be a busy weekend for cross Solent swimmers, with events on both Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th. The QHM LNtM are here and here. A little closer inshore, so likely mostly out of the way, there is the Southsea Rowing Club Regatta on the 17th, details here. Links to the Langstone, Chichester and Portsmouth LNtM pages are below in the Useful Links section.

The events section is looking pretty packed for the coming week, and if you want to see what is a little further down the line you can check the Tudor website Social Calendar and Activities Calendar sections. A few additional ideas were also circulated on Monday, so let the relevant people know if you are interested so they know. I will just pull from that email on event that is coming up this weekend:

Sword Sands Picnic – Family Paddle

This event is for all club members, feel free to join us in a tender, dinghy SUP, windsurfer, gig or cruiser on Sword Sands, the more the merrier!

Just bring a picnic, something to drink and even games for a fun couple of hours on the best beach in the harbour! Please be aware that it is going to be mildly breezy so even in the sunshine it can get chilly.

To let the organisers know you are coming please ‘book’ using Webcollect.

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address. No need to be feeling isolated and cut off from the world to do so, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Game, set and match – Wimbledon is Back!

There’s still time to join up with the many other members who will be watching the final on the clubs large screen on 11th July at 2pm. Enjoy the atmosphere with a bowl of traditional, delicious strawberries and cream and a glass of prosecco for just £5, just not at Wimbledon prices!

There will be the option of Eton Mess too if you prefer and the bar will be open for when your prosecco runs dry.

Dinghy Section Update

The round Hayling island cruise planned for the 17th July unfortunately can not go ahead due to Marlin being out of action. Instead it will be a cruise in the harbour with details to follow at a later date. But it is hoped to have a sail up the main channel. On a more positive note Locks sailing club are holding their regatta on the 24th and 25th July. Attached are the sailing instructions for the regatta.

Duties for the remainder of the season and the winter racing have now been added to dutyman. If you are thinking of signing up for vacant duties please do so in a timely manner.

Race Officer and Patrol Boat Training and Refreshers

Hello all,

I’ve taken on the role of Training Officer for the club as part of the Sailing Committee. I love to race in my Laser Radial or Vago so it’s been good to be able to give something back to the club’s dinghy racing programme and its sailors by volunteering for this role.

We are building up our sailing programme again as restrictions ease and there are lots of gaps in the duty rota to be filled.

Race Officer training is now available, for the club line and committee boat. I will be running a session on Sunday 11 July for club line and general race officer procedures which will apply to either Race Box or Committee Boat arrangements. This will start at 11:00 and will involve training then a live race which starts at 13:00. I expect the session will finish at around 15:30. There are two spaces available.

Further training sessions will be available in the evening on Tuesday 13th July, Friday 16th July (Friendly Friday) and more dates will follow if there is sufficient interest. These will be approx. 90 mins, with start times arranged to suit the participants. There will be two spaces available per session.

The first specific committee boat training/refresher session will take place on Saturday 31st July to coincide with Summer Series 1&2 which will start down-harbour from Bruce. This session will start at 15:00, with the racing starting at 17:00. The session is likely to end at approximately 19:30-20:00.

Once new volunteers have undergone shore training a buddy arrangement will be set up to build confidence in the role before a duty is done independently. If any established Race Officers are happy to volunteer to be buddies to oversee and advise new recruits and build up your duty hours please email me.

Patrol Boat Helm and Patrol Boat Crew training and refresher sessions will be announced in the coming weeks.

Training sessions count towards your duty allocation for the year.

Rowing Race Night

Hi everyone.

We are getting together again for our second informal rowing race night at Friendly Friday on July 9th. Fingers crossed for good weather.

For those that are joining us we plan to meet at 6pm for a 6.15pm briefing and be on the water for 6.30pm.

Once we’ve finished racing (around 8pm) we plan to head back to the club house for a beer and fish&chips.

You are very welcome even if you don’t row. It would be great to see old faces (by experience not age obviously ) and new.

The bar is open from 6.30pm as always for friendly Friday and the fish & chips available from approx 8pm. Bar food and snacks are also available from 6.30pm.

The rowing event is free of charge and the link to web collect for the fish and chips @£4 per person is below. This does need to be pre ordered please.

If you’ve never rowed before, come and meet us and take a look. We’d love to meet you.

Waiting for the Tide

I was on the LHB habour tour last Friday, where we show the councillors on the Board what the harbour is about. As we headed towards Tudor there were a number of harbour seals and a grey seal on the mud. There’s nothing unusual there, except that it was noted that a number of them were heavily pregnant. Whilst this is good news, I though it worth putting a reminder in to give them plenty of space. This not only avoids disturbing them, but also keeps you a safe distance – they have powerful jaws which could be used to let you know you are too close.

Whilst on the subject of the harbour tour, as we passed the Broom buoy I managed to snap a photo of it in a slightly unusual position whilst it was undergoing maintenance aboard a work barge. I’ve attached it out of interest.

Finally, a quick reminder that Langstone Harbour Board have a new VHF channel, VHF Ch 68. Details can be found in the LNtM 06/2021 at https://www.langstoneharbour.org.uk/local-notices-to-mariners.
