Plymouth Branch Committee Meeting Minutes (Jul and Sep 14)

Notes from the meetings

Plymouth Branch Annual Prizegiving – Thursday 6 Nov 14 1830

At the Royal Western Yacht Club. Presentation of the prizes for Offshore, Dinghies and Single Handed race series. Wine and nibbles will be available and the bar will be open. It would be nice to see as many members and competitors to round off the sailing season.

East Coast hold their AGM

Memebrs and friends gathered at the West Mersea Yacht Club on Saturday evening to review 2014 and make plans for 2015. The East Coast Branch met at West Mersea Yacht Club for its annual general meeting on 11th October 2014. The Branch Captain/Chair and Secretary reported on the past year that had seen intense activity putting together NL70 and still managing and supporting a regular cruise programme for 2014.

The Reluctant Anchor Watchman

A sardonic look at anchoring. Why would anyone choose to pass by a marina and head for that quiet little anchorage that offers no facilities, no chance to charge the batteries at exorbitant cost and no bar where one can sit and covet the super yacht that dwarfs your own floating cash drain? Read Peter Stone's musings from this year's cruising on the link below.

Ebb & Flow No. 229 – October 2014

October 2014 edition of Ebb & Flow. The usual thanks to Richard Curtis for editing another great edition (he even makes my report look interesting).

Best regards,

Cruiser Captain election

It’s that time of year again – After the lift-out safety brief on the 15th October, we need to elect next year’s Cruiser Captain. I am prepared to stand again, unless anyone else would like to give it a try. I would also like to hear if anyone has any suggestions for trips / cruises for next year, as calendar planning time is fast approaching. As you probably know, the main summer (Commodore’s) cruise is currently planned to take us to the Bay of Seine – what about the bank holidays? (end of May and August). How about an extra “Passage Race” out of the Solent (Poole maybe)? Following on from the Dinghy section end of season meeting, it is hoped to re-instate the Priory Bay cruise for dinghies and cruisers next year, with the possibility of cruisers taking extra family members / less confident dinghy crew / BBQ gear etc and chaperoning the dinghies to a degree during the crossing – They always used to be great fun!

If the highly successful “Bart’s Bash” event is going to be repeated next year (as is planned), it would be nice to have some sort of short race for the cruisers to join in too, if anyone has any ideas.

RNSA win the ILEX Trophy

The annual battle between the Royal Engineers and Portsmouth branch was won by yachts Electron V, Excitable and Wild Blue competing in light conditions on the Solent. Full news item to follow.

RNSA (P) Autumn Series – Race 6

The shorts and T shirts remain on display as the unseasonably warm weather continues into October. Although as the nights draw in it is difficult to set a course that doesn't have half the fleet finishing in the dark, fortunately they all made it back for the pie or curry at HSSC. With Happy Apple unable to make it, Tinker T took on the duties of SOOD and set a course of a beat to SE Ryde Middle, followed by a beam reach - ideal for the asymmetric boats and a run home against the tide.

Tidal Diamond 416 – End of season dinghy meeting, Compound reorganisation

Tidal Diamond No. 416

End of season dinghy section meeting

There will be an end of season dinghy section meeting on Saturday 4th October, immediately after compound reorganisation. This will include a review of the season, discussion on the club’s sailing development plan and training needs plus appointment of dinghy and cadet captains. All are welcome.

Janice Bell

Compound Reorganisation

Sadly it is the time of year that we have to think about reorganising the compound for the winter and bringing the cruisers in for their time ashore.
There are a number of things that need to be done.

Please:-

  • take your dinghy home if you have paid for a ‘Summer space’ only or if you are willing to take it home anyway. Let me know by email when you do this.
  • let me know if you intend to race regularly in the winter series (I will put Lasers in the Inner compound as we did last year).
  • let me know by email (address in front of calendar) if you will need access to your dinghy over the winter.
  • check that your boat launching trolley is named – it causes no end of frustration if it is not!!
  • check that your dinghy is moveable – again, this is a real problem if it is not. Boats should not be locked up.
  • bring along gardening gloves and a bag for rubbish.
  • come and help with the dinghy re-org – it is on the 4th October at 09:00 hours.

I have noticed that the edges of the fence, especially where the cruisers are going to go, is very overgrown with nettles, so if anyone is able to help to get these cut down and bagged up I will dispose of them. I am very pleased to say that the area just inside the North gates of the main compound has been kept clear of rubbish, however there are various bits of rubbish (old mooring tackle etc) around the rest of the compound especially down the south end. If this is yours please clear it up as this will hamper the work of the compound crew on the ‘Recovery weekend’.

Photo-shoot in Weymouth Bay

RNSA Portland join the WPCA for their annual photo-shoot in Weymouth Bay At the end of the sailing season it is customary for the Weymouth and Portland Cruising Association to hold a Photo Shoot in Weymouth Bay. This year RNSA Portland Branch requested WPCA if we could join them and we got together to draft out a plan which also included a Pontoon Party to cap off the event in the Marina.
