Rowing at the Regatta

Hi everyone..

As you know on the 4th and 5th September Tudor will be hosting its annual regatta. As part of the fun we will be holding our monthly informal rowing race on the afternoon of Saturday 4th. We plan to start racing around 2pm. (Arrive at club house for course briefing by 1.40 pm please). This should allow time for those participating in sailing to get back, de-rig, and join us. The racing will be from the club line and will have a slightly shorter route than previous months. John will brief everyone on the day. As always strictly informal and fun. No wooden spoon just our beautiful trophy. It would be fabulous to see as many of you there as possible even if you’re not a rower. Teams are randomly drawn. Any questions, as always, just get in touch with me.

Regatta Weekend Food

On Saturday there will be a BBQ between 12 and 4, which will be pay on the day at the galley, card payments only please. Vegan options will be available.

We have cream teas and various scrumptious desserts such as caramel apple pie with cream, and toffee and honeycomb cheesecake.

There will also be plenty of flavours of milkshakes for you to choose from, that’s if you fancy a change from testing all those ales, ciders and gins.

https://webcollect.org.uk/tudorsc/event/regatta-gin-ale-and-cider-festival

Around 7.30 we will be serving chilli con carne with rice followed by an evening of dancing to the fabulous sounds of Derek Pearces disco.

Please can you pre-book for the evening chilli though, its only a fiver! Thanks.

https://webcollect.org.uk/tudorsc/event/tudor-regatta-chilli-and-disco

Throughout Sunday’s regatta we will be serving freshly baked hot pasties, such as lamb and mint, pork and apple and chicken and chorizo. Veggie option available.

We would be grateful for your help on the day, please check on Dutyman if you need to make up your club hours, thanks

We look forward to seeing you over the weekend. Good luck to those of you that are racing, but most importantly, stay safe and have fun.

It’s Coming Home

Congratulations!!!

Last Saturday…28th August the rowing section entered 5 gigs in the Hamble Regatta, (pictures attached). The main trophy is the “Boatyard Sheave” given for the fastest boat round the 4 mile course and I’m delighted to share that it now resides in our club cabinet won by boat “Freedom” crewed by Ian, Sandy, John and Glen, and Nina as cox. We also took the top ladies “Rose Bowl” trophy in “Friendship” crewed by Sue, Jane, Denise, Penny and Alison as cox and a third trophy was only missed by some “as yet unexplained” technical decision.

These races are very close run affairs, with just 12 seconds between first and second after 20 minutes of racing. In the past we have lost by just 6 seconds after 45 minutes of hard rowing so the crews have to pull all the stops out right to the line to be in contention.

The conditions were perfect for hard rowing, no sun with a light breeze and flat water. As the Hamble is a highly congested and relatively narrow river it is a timed affair with crews started in pairs at one minute intervals to reduce the chance of “unseemly” clashes at the turns. From a rowers perspective this is not ideal as it is best to be able to “see” ones main competitors but this “ignorance of position” while racing certainly adds to the apprehension and fires up the adrenaline just as much as if the blighters were alongside.

The Hamble folk are an extremely friendly bunch making us feel very much at home, a great day amongst great people.

Pictures are attached and there is some great GoPro footage on YouTube if you search TSC Rowers Racing River Hamble 1, 2, and 3. Here’s one of the links:

Waiting for the Tide

A couple of QHM notices of note this week. There’s a danger mark off Seaview reported missing from station. Details at: https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/QHM/Portsmouth/Local-Notices/Navigational-Warnings/2021/2162

There’s also Gosport Marine Festival on 4th September, although no doubt with the Tudor Regatta on there won’t be any members in the vicinity ? Details at: https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/QHM/Portsmouth/Local-Notices/LNTM/2021/2162-GOSPORT-MARINE-FESTIVAL-4-SEPT-21

As a quick aside, do make use of the links below for the full set of LNtM for Langstone, Chichester and Portsmouth. I don’t add an exhaustive list of them, just some that may be of particular interest.

I will also note that the regatta sailing instructions and a couple of posters are attached.

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Let’s be careful out there.

HSSC RNSA Autumn Series Race 1 Results

From Mike Shrives. High Pressure, blue skies, calm waters and a variable North Easterly meant lovely conditions for the Autumn Series race one. Unsurprisingly as Summer leave is still uppermost in some participants itineraries the turn out was a little low on numbers but six yachts awaited the Race Officer to let the show begin.

FOR SALE – Wayfarer – SN:679 “Red Tape”

Wayfarer 679 Red Tape: looking for a good home!

Sadly, I am seeking a new owner for Red Tape.
I have owned her for more than 40 years but, having decided to downsize our home, I will no longer have access to an important component: A garage!

It is essential that she is over wintered under cover to maintain the quality of the paintwork, to dry her out and to undertake those regular tasks that are inevitable with a well-used but ancient boat.

Built in Portsmouth Dockyard in 1963, she was fully renovated in 1999 with new decking and up-to-date fittings, mast, boom, sails, launching trolley and road trailer.

A delight to sail, she has been and can be competitive although new sails would now be useful – after all the existing set are over 20 years old.

I am offering her for the princely sum of £250 to include a second sail set and all of the many components that I have acquired over time.

For more information, please contact me at john.pokeefe@icloud.com

Waiting for the Tide

From a recent Tweet by LIFE Recreation ReMEDIES:

We’re working with Hampshire & IoW Wildlife Trust to observe recreational activities in the Solent. It will help us understand the relationship between these activities and seagrass. If you live locally and want to help, contact us here https://saveourseabed.co.uk/the-project/contact/. Not necessarily the most useful link as it is just the generic contact page, but their website may be of interest, along with the section on recreational boating.

Seagrass is one of their key interests, and something I remember stretching from the Tudor moorings to the shore on both sides when I was younger (and when the clubhouse was by the Eastern Road bridge). It helps us a recreational users by keeping the mudflats secure, provides habitat for young fish and other wildlife, the mudflats it helps are extremely efficient carbon sinks and it helps the water quality – what’s not to like! Oh, it is also the only known flowering sea plant!

Bart’s Bash

This year we have been invited by the Portsmouth Andrew Simpson Centre to take part in their Bart’s Bash race on 11th September. This will be instead of the club hosting its own Bart’s Bash race. There will be a racing briefing at 13:30 at the Andrew Simpson Centre which you are encouraged to attend to find out about how the race will be run. This is followed by launching at 14:00 with the race starting at 14:30 until approximately 15:30. To enter please drop me an email as well as booking a race entry at the following link: https://asportsmouth.checkfront.co.uk/reserve/?category_id=39 The £5 entry fee is your donation for the Andrew Simpson Foundation. If you are using your own boat you do not need RYA level 2.

The Portsmouth Andrew Simpson Centre will also be hosting some taster sessions during the day if racing does not take your fancy. Which can be booked at the same link.

Tudor Regatta

On the 4th and 5th September Tudor will be hosting its annual regatta. The racing will be taking place down harbour from 10:30 on the Saturday and 11:00 on the Sunday. We will be using the club committee boat Bruce for the start line for both the cruiser and dinghy races. The intention is to host one cruiser race per day. While the dinghies will be doing 2 races back to back on the Saturday and one longer race on the Sunday. For further details please see attached the sailing instructions. On the Saturday afternoon there will be a BBQ, rowing races and kayaking fun plus the bar will be open.

On Saturday evening we will be hosting the prize giving for the 2019 season, tickets will be available from Webcollect shortly. This was supposed to have taken place back in 2020 but this was not able to take place due to the pandemic. Unfortunately we will not be allowing members to take club trophies home with them due to the need to get them engraved for the 2021 season.

After racing on the Sunday, there will be a short prize giving for the regatta. There will be prizes for first, second and third for each fleet.

Calling all Young Rowers

A reminder that we are once again building a “Young Rowers” group at the club. The previous group headed by (to name just a few) Dani, Ella, Jay and Callum all became exceptional rowers and coxswain, winning races and helping to spread the name (and fear ? ) of Tudor SC rowers, but time has rolled by and they have inconveniently grown up and become “Oldies” ? … so we start anew.

The most important point to emphasise is that all Tudor rowing is done informally and for FUN, apart from basic boat discipline there is definitely no “regimentation” and we know from the feedback from other clubs that this is a major draw for new and old rowers alike.

So!! Go and find your children and Grandchildren aged between 10 and 18 and lead them to our new Young Rowing group where they will build confidence afloat with high quality tuition in a fun atmosphere.

Weekly coaching sessions are planned for Thursday evenings starting at 1730 hrs, finishing each week around 1830 hrs. Rowing is an all year pursuit, and we’ll revisit the day and time as we lose the light.

Young Rowers under the age of 15 will be mainly taught sculling technique to protect their young musculature from the side stresses of Sweep oars.

All coaches will be DBS checked and the training will be carried out under the Tudor rowing section safety protocols which are available in the rowing section of the website. The group will naturally be monitored by the club welfare officer.

As, by design, there are limited seats on a gig, please book a place by contacting the Rowing Captain. From there you’ll be sent the necessary consent paperwork to complete and added to our new Young Rowers WhatsApp group where we can keep you up to date easily on news, information and all the fun your children are having. Sessions will be £2 per rower per week which goes towards club gig maintenance.

All that’s left to say is … Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028 await ?

Due to overwintering birds they have to stop the work on the foreshore at the end of September, but “Works continue at the Tudor Sailing Club slipway, which will be finished in good time before we finish our construction season at the end of September” and “Next month, we will begin work to install the glass flood wall at the Andrew Simpson Centre and Tudor Sailing Club“. Life Jackets

Casualty Review Panel gives its findings This panel is made up of members from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, Maritime Accident Investigation Branch, RNLI, maritime industry, academia and sports governing bodies. It meets once a year to discuss the circumstances surrounding fatal maritime incidents, and makes a judgment about whether a life jacket or buoyancy aid might have saved a person's life, have found that the lives of 16 people could have been saved in 2020 if they had been wearing a life jacket while out on the water.
