Waiting for the Tide

It’s that time of year when news (sailing wise at least) we are stuck in the doldrums, so a few items that may be of interest from the Sustainable Anchoring and Mooring webinar I attended earlier (there are more coming up, with two Solent based on The Green Blue website).

I’m old enough to remember quite significant seagrass areas on either side of the Tudor moorings. They were a great indicator that it may be time to go ashore before you ran out of water! Although the new Advance Mooring Systems aren’t particularly helpful for drying moorings like ours (the purpose is to keep the chain off the bed, and if a boat is settling anyway that won’t help!), there was another element of these moorings that caught my attention. They use helical screws driven deep into the sea bed that give you a clear and measurable strength of hold, and with the elastic rode in particular, the swing area is reduced alowing a higher density of moorings. Something to watch for the future.

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Let’s be careful out there.
