Social Events

Please note due to the bar refurbishment continuing we are postponing the social events we had planned for this month.

I think the majority that had pre booked have been contacted, we appreciate you supporting the club and look forward to seeing you in due course.

The cruiser launch is on the weekend of 9th and 10th April.

Please contact me if you are happy to help out in the galley that weekend, or add your name on Duty man. We can’t do it without help, thanks

Ebb & Flow

Just over 4 short weeks (well, they will feel short) until the cruiser launch weekend, so time to rejig the list of jobs into has to be done before launch; I think I can get this done before launch; can be done on the water after launch; will have to be done next winter; and who knows when I’ll get round to this!

High on the first section of that list should be checking the mooring, and a quick look at the tide tables shows that sometime between Friday 18th and Wednesday 23rd March looks good with tides between around 0.5m and 1m. Ever an opportunity to get cold, wet and muddy – sorry, enjoy getting out on the water; does that sell it better?

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Let’s be careful out there.

Social Events

A massive thank you to Giles for hosting the whisky and chocolate evening on Saturday, what a wonderful event, even if I didn’t get to bed until gone 1am.

It was lovely to see members from all sections get together and enjoy themselves.

We have a couple of social events this month, we are hoping we will still be able to open the bar during the refurbishment.

Mamma Mia Sing-A-Long – 11th March at 7.00pm

It’s only £3 and that includes popcorn and ice cream, and should be a bit of fun

https://webcollect.org.uk/tudorsc/event/mamma-mia-sing-a-long

Curry Night – 18th March 6.30 – 8.00pm

Once a month we will be having a curry evening to see if it proves popular. This month we will be serving chicken tikka masala with rice.

It would help us with numbers if you prebooked on webcollect please, but we are able to take card payments on the evening.

https://webcollect.org.uk/tudorsc/event/curry-night-4

Duty Hours

One of the many perks of being a member of TSC is that we are able to reduce our membership fees by completing duty hours.

If you wish to help us in the galley, it would be much appreciated.

You would need to come along to one of our informal training evenings, to go through health and hygiene in the kitchen, and to check to see if you can make me a decent cup of tea!

https://webcollect.org.uk/tudorsc/event/galley-training

Once this has been completed you are able to decide which event you would like to help us with.

It may be preparing or serving food, or even cleaning and washing up, and it equates to £20 an hour off of your fees.

Sailing Duties

Sailing Duties allocation

Those of you with login’s for the Sailing Duties should now have received two emails regarding the allocation process for the first half of the year. The process asks you to “select duties that you would prefer to do, and indicate dates when you will not be available”. The selection period runs until the 7th March when the allocation will commence. It is important to mark the ‘Not available’ as this prevents allocation of duties you cannot do. I would also ask that you add your membership number in the field provided as is aids in reconciling duties to memberships. If for any reason you no longer do duties, then let me know by email at duties

Sailing Duties Volunteers required

Volunteers are needed:

  • 20th March PB helm is required
  • 3rd April PB helm and Race officer

As always please volunteer on Dutyman: https://dutyman.biz/dmmain.aspx?id=T0001338

Rowing Activities

Get your bobble hats on

Hi everyone.

The rowing calendar for this year is now on the website and there’s plenty to suit everyone.

It’s been a great start to the year. I’ve never seen so many bobble hats out on the water. The conversation is usually ‘I can’t feel my toes, can you feel your toes?’ but it’s an immense joy to see the harbour and her inhabitants at any time of the year. The wonder never dulls.

We’ve got sporty rows, leisure rows, organised events, and intro rows again this year. And we’re delighted we’ve got dates for combined rows/paddles/sailing already in the diary with more to come. New this year is a gentler row for those that crave a slower pace of life (who doesn’t ☺).

If you don’t row currently, and would like to, please do get in touch. There’s hopefully something for everyone this year. And most importantly, don’t forget you don’t have to row at all to come along to our Friendly Friday rowing race evenings and share some laughs and a small(ish) G&T ☺

Happy Rowing in 2022.

Ebb & Flow

New membership year, new title. Back when the first lockdown started, what feels like a very long time ago now, and content became very thin on the ground, I needed a title for the section I put together. Waiting for the Tide seemed appropriate (I forgot it was used elsewhere, but it isn’t exactly a unique phrase). As things have progressed, lockdowns have come and gone and we are, if not quite back to normal, at least getting out on the water a bit more I thought we could switch to a more traditional name. Recent members may not know, so for those I will quickly note that Ebb & Flow is / was the printed (or PDF) club newsletter. I don’t know when it started, but it goes back as long as I can remember (in fact I used to envelope and post them a good few years ago). The last one (distributed by email at that time) was in the summer of 2019, and since then it has taken a pause. So with a quick note that member’s content is always welcome, I will borrow / commandeer / press gang the name for here. We are no longer stuck ashore waiting to get on the water again (erm, he says with a cruiser in the compound waiting to get on the water again!), but making best use of all states of the tide and what Langstone Harbour and the surrounding water has to offer.

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Let’s be careful out there.

VHF Course

Last chance to book a place on a RYA VHF course as we have 3 places left on this coming Sunday’s course.

As part of our ongoing commitment to training, the Sailing Committee have arranged 2 RYA VHF courses / short range certificate. The courses will be run at the Club on the following dates, Sunday 06/02 and Sunday 27/02, the proposed time for the course will be from 08:00 to 17:00 The cost for the course will be £99 per person with an additional fee of £60 per person, which is an RYA Exam fee and will need to be paid prior to the course (I will send the link beforehand)

Course aims:

To provide clients with an understanding of radio rules and regulations and be competent and licensed to operate a marine SRC VHF DSC radio. A VHF SRC licence is a legal requirement for anyone who uses a ship’s VHF or portable VHF Radio. All new VHF Radio users need to obtain this certificate to operate their radios safely and legally.

Course content:

The VHF course covers the Global Maritime Distress & Safety System (GMDSS), marine VHF radio operations and voice procedures and the operation of VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC). You will be taught how to use basic radio language and protocols and the correct use of various channels. Learn how to make calls to other radio users, emergency calls and send a distress alert.

Course pre-requisites:

No previous experience is required to enrol on the VHF course. However, you will be asked to learn your phonetic alphabet before the start of the course. NATO Phonetic Alphabet chart

Please note that the VHF Exam Fee is payable online to the RYA before the start of your course. You will receive details of how to do this in your booking confirmation.

If you are interested in completing the course please could you email your name and also a preference to which date you would like to attend, if you can only attend one of the dates please can you let me know which one in your email. We have a limit of 12 places per course so it will work on a first come first served basis. I look forward to hearing from you, my email address is andy.healey

Winter storms – safety in the compound

With all the recent wild weather there have been a few boat covers and at least one sail which have been flapping furiously in the wind. Please can you make sure you continue to check your boat is safe and secure and that there is nothing which can blow away or damage another member’s boat.

At the time of writing LAMBADA is sitting at a precarious angle and should be given a wide berth until it has been repositioned.

Many thanks, and here’s to calm winds and seas over the coming months.

Waiting for the Tide

Last call for renewals, by the time the next Tidal Diamond comes out it will be too late. Renew by next Monday to get another year of fantastic sailing, rowing, or whichever water based activity you enjoy at Tudor. (Disclaimer, we can’t guarantee the weather or the degree of fantasic-ness, but we have every confidence it is worth it!).

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.
