Sunday Series – Race 1, Sunday 1st July

The Sunday Series starts this weekend. The handicap split for the series is <=1150 for the FAST handicap and >=1151 for the SLOW handicap fleet.

Fast Handicap competitors will compete for the coveted Middleditch Trophy, and slow handicap sailors compete for the TSC Trophy.

The number of fleet starts, and courses may be slightly different for each fleet, depending on the number of entries on each day – this is at the race officers discretion.

Your club, your security

Can I please remind everyone that it is your responsibility to ensure that the club is left in a secure state. This means making sure all doors and windows are properly shut behind you, not left on the latch. It also means that you don’t leave club keys in locks and the compound gates open. It has also been observed that lights in both the changing rooms have been left on overnight when they should be turned off by the last member to leave. If in doubt lock it and turn it off.

New look website home page & hi-definition webcam

Those of you who visit the club’s website will have noticed a few changes over the last few weeks. The home page has a new responsive design, so that it works on mobiles and tablets, a new menu system which is also developed to be mobile friendly, and a cleaner, simpler look and feel to aid navigation. This project was initiated following the RYA Development Conference that was hosted at Tudor SC a few months ago, where the RYA reviewed the website of each club who had sent a representative and offered constructive criticism to improve each site further. Whilst Tudors website was praised for the wealth of information and speed of loading, the RYA thought that the site would work better with more ‘whitespace’, in a format that was also mobile friendly. We hope this new site works well on all your devices.

The club has also been gifted a new hi-definition webcam, by the University of Portsmouth Rowing Club, who wanted to be able to remotely assess the sea state before making the trip to the club for rowing training. We would like to thank UPRC for funding this improved webcam, which we hope will benefit both UPRC and TSC members alike.

Lastly, I would like to thank Trevor Fletcher for all his hard work on implementing both these projects.

Bruce – Wind Instruments & Strange Movements

A few members contacted me last week, having noticed that Bruce was missing from its mooring last Thursday / Friday. I would like to thanks these members for their concerns, but worry not, it was a planned absence.

As you may be aware, Locks SC also use Bruce on regular basis throughout the summer, and one of their members has kindly gifted a set of wind instruments to measure apparent wind strength and direction. The member of Locks also kindly fitted these instruments during a short stay at Southsea Marina, hence Bruce was not on its mooring last week.

On behalf of the club, I would like to express my gratitude for this kind donation by Locks SC. Hopefully it will improve the tools available for race management on board.

The harbour master is also performing some routine maintenance on Bruce’s mooring this week, so Bruce has been moved to a neighbouring mooring whilst these works are underway. Thanks to Ian Barber and Ian Simpson for moving Bruce at short notice on Sunday.
