Cruising in the Midlands – yes really!

Region's cruising clubs helping Midlands yachtspeople fuel their passion year round

RNSA(P) Wednesday Summer Series race 9

Ideal conditions for the final race of the Summer Series except perhaps for the honking tide greeted the small fleet to contest the final podium places. Sunshine set the course of a beat into the foul tide to NE Ryde Middle, a kite reach to Browndown and a run home. With 6 competing yachts the starts were combined.

The Chris Wadham Trophy is a Tudor SC vs Locks SC competition, where the results from the top 6 placed boats from each club are used to determine the winning club. If there are fewer than 6 entrants from either club, this will become the number of results required to determine the victor.

The race will be hosted by Locks SC, and will be a committee boat start, using Bruce. There will be 2 races, with the first start at 13:00. There will also be 2 fleets, with individual starts for each fleet.

Club Kayak Purchase

The Exec has approved the purchase of 4 sit on top kayaks to be bought at the end of July. The club intends to purchase two single seat kayaks and two double seat kayaks complete with seats and paddles. The cost of the boats will be met from the club reserves and as assets they will be depreciated over a number of years. Kayaking is a fast growing sport in the UK as can already be seen in the harbour with the amount of kayakers out each weekend. The purchase of the kayaks will enhance our existing fleet which include sailing dinghies, the patrol boats and Rosie the gig. The boats will allow more people to get out on the water, especially those who are not sailors but would like to go out with their families and enjoy the harbour. It will also enable us to grow our membership as we regularly have enquiries from prospective kayakers but have no kit they can use. The kayaks will be available to be booked via Fastcourts for £2 for the single and £4 for the double (same rates as Rosie)

Galley Training

For those of you interested in contributing to the vibrant atmosphere of the club through volunteering for your maintenance hours in the galley I will be running a training session next Wednesday (1st August), 1815.

The session will take up to 30mins and will give you an introduction to the kitchen, use of equipment, a few health and safety pointers and the money handling procedure. It will also be an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have.

Members really appreciate the galley being open on Friendly Fridays and for other events particularly having hot food when they come off the water. So volunteer to be a part of the galley team; there are 2 positions available, the cook and the cooks assistant. Being the cook means you can prepare a meal of your choice either on-site in the kitchen or make it at home and bring it in to serve so you can be as creative as you like. As the cooks assistant you will help with the prep, serving and clearing away afterwards.

Galley duties available for Friendly Fridays in August (3 / 10 / 17 / 24 / 31) all require 2 volunteers for 3 hours each. For new members it’s a great opportunity to meet people. If you’re interested in either training or galley duty contact me via the website. Your contribution would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sunday Bar

We are considering removing the Sunday lunchtime session from the standard bar opening times from the end of August. The reasons for this are that (1) outside of club events the bar is rarely used during this session with takings typically amounting to a few pounds which does not reflect the maintenance-hours effort invested in opening and running the bar and (2) it is getting increasingly difficult to find volunteers that are prepared to work these sessions.

This would not prevent any current bar trained member from opening the bar on Sunday (or at any other time within our licence constraints) to serve drinks for themselves and others using the honesty box system if they so wish.

Please contact me if you believe that there is a case for retaining these sessions before we make a decision at the August Exec Meeting, or if you would like to be bar trained.

Cellar Duties

I am looking for volunteers to join the established team that look after the bar’s cellar and beer lines.

The team work on a rota basis but the actual day and timing of the duty is very flexible. The duty includes cleaning the beer lines, preparing cask ale for dispense, keeping the bar’s cellar tidy, and removing glass bottles for recycling as required.

Full training will be provided and completing the allotted duties over the course of the membership year will fulfil the maintenance requirement in full.

If you are interested in volunteering for this duty or require further information, please contact me.

Commodore Philip Warwick chosen as RNSA Chief Executive

Members who read my editorial in the recent Journal will have noted that I announced to the Committee my intention to step down as your General Secretary after a wonderful decade in post. Plan A was for this to be effective in the month of September but Plan B is best! Following advertisements in our Journal, the Officer’s Association and the White Ensign Association, the Chairman received a number of enquiries and conducted interviews for three highly qualified candidates.
