Priory Bay Cruise – Saturday 21st July, 10:00

The annual Priory Bay cruise to the Isle of Wight is scheduled for this Saturday, leaving Tudor SC at 10am. This cruise is open to Cruisers and Dinghies, although we advise that only experienced dinghy sailors should attempt crossing the Solent. If you would like to experience this cruise, but do not feel confident enough to helm your own boat, we will try to find you a ride aboard another boat, either a cruiser, or dinghy. Equally, if you are able to offer a spare berth aboard your boat, please let me know and I will try to pair you together.

The cruise across the Solent can take 2-3 hours, with an hour or so enjoyed on the beach at Priory Bay (IoW), before making the return crossing. Therefore, sailors and support crew are unlikely to get back to the club until late afternoon.

The long range forecast is looking very light in the morning, building in the afternoon – although it is too early to make any weather related decisions. Cruisers will be able to make this crossing with relative ease in most conditions, as they can use their engine to overcome lighter winds, and are built to take rougher seas. The decision to let the Dinghy fleet cross the Solent is always more marginal, as most will lack an engine, and are not as safe in high winds. The club do not recommend making the crossing in winds higher than 15+ knots, as the sea state is not suitable for dinghies.

Please come prepared with plenty of food and drink for the day, extra clothing is essential (regardless of the heatwave), suntan lotion a must, and all dinghies must carry a compass to mitigate against poor visibility and a whistle to draw attention.

A detailed passage plan and itinerary will be discussed on the morning at a briefing before launch. Please arrive in plenty of time to rig, change and be briefed, so that we can depart the slip as close to 10am as possible.

If anyone would like to volunteer for the role of Cruise Leader, then please let me know. You can lead the cruise from your own boat, and full passage planning support can be provided. If you need someone to be responsible for making the weather decision, this can also be arranged. Please let me know if you are interested.

Langstone Harbour Combined Clubs Series

The Langstone Harbour Combined Clubs Series (formerly known as the Interclub Series) is a competition between the 3 dinghy racing clubs in the harbour (Locks SC, Langstone SC & Tudor SC). The series comprises of up to 14 races, combining the results from the 4 mains regattas held over the course of the season. The following qualifying races count towards the final series:

  • Locks SC Regatta, Races 1-3 (June ’18)
  • Langstone SC Regatta, Races 1 & 2 (July ’18)
  • Langstone Harbour Race Weekend, Races 1-6 (August ’18)
  • Tudor SC Regatta, Races 1-3 (September ’18)

With just 5 of the 14 qualifying races completed so far, there is still plenty to play for in the standings. There are 59 boats who have already competed between the Locks and Langstone Regattas, with a few Tudor boats making the trip to compete on our neighbours home waters. The LH Combined Clubs Series results are now available to view online: VIEW RESULTS HERE

10th Langstone Harbour Race Weekend – Friday 24th August – Monday 27th August

Celebrating the 10th year of the LHRW, the event was moved later in the year to the August bank holiday weekend to make use of the favourable tides.

The event will follow a similar format to previous years, with 6 races over the Saturday and Sunday; although there will be a single ‘Charity Fun Race’ on the Monday, which will not be included in the regatta series results. We would like to encourage more juniors and families to participate in the event this year, and the Monday should provide a more relaxed format of race to hopefully increase participation from local club sailors.

In our continued aim to promote better one-design class racing within the harbour, we will be welcoming the following 3 class associations to the LHRW, who will be hosting various championships as part of the event:

  • Wanderer – National Championships
  • Wayfarer – Western Area Championships and Craftinsure National Circuit and Travellers Series
  • Lightning 368 – Sea Championships

Tudor SC members are actively encouraged to participate in these prestigious events, as all three of these classes are owned by various Tudor SC members (8x Wanderers, 15x Wayfarers & 2x Lightning 368s at last count). It would be really great to see at least 1 Tudor representative from each class taking part.

Please see attached the Event Poster and Notice of Race for more details, or visit www.langstonerace.com

The online entry system is now live and places at the regatta can be reserved here: ONLINE ENTRY

We are also looking for additional duty volunteers over the weekend, including help at registration, TSC Shore-based Coordinators (no prior experience required), event Photographer, Patrol Boat Helm and Patrol Boat Crew slots etc. If you are able to volunteers for one, or multiple days over the bank holiday weekend we would really appreciate your support. Please contact me using the email below, or volunteer via the Dutyman system.

Cruiser Captain’s Maiden Voyage, 2018

Cruiser Captain, Richard Gunn and Cathy Gunn make maiden voyage of 2018.
Atropos joined by Dream On, Saltair and Good Year at Newport harbour. Picture shows Richard and Cathy enjoying a BBQ under the trees adjacent the harbour car park Saturday evening, with the usual suspects (almost a selfie, my shadow in the foreground). A relaxing evening following a pleasant sail from Langstone.
