Thames Great River Race 2018
My apologies for not reporting back sooner.
Tudor Rowing crew Sandy Craig – Bow sweep, Ian Ducane – Sculls, John Elson – Stroke sweep, coxswain/passenger Jay Ducane & Heather Owen supported by Graham and Helen Ducane entered the boat “Freedom” in the Thames GRR 2018 on the 8th September.
The race started at Millwall Docks and finished 21.6 miles upriver at Ham just below Teddington Locks. This was only our second time in this excellent event finishing 17th last year from a fleet of 330 boats
This year was a tough row, wind and rough waters made very interesting rowing at times. Waves were coming from all directions and water was getting into the boat. Heather was passenger in the bow seat during this section of the course and was suffering the brunt of the incoming water. Luckily we had installed a hand powered bilge pump, Heather worked hard removing the water from the boat.
We powered forward to overtake the boats ahead of us to become lead boat in the race. We had a local club- Elephant Boatyard – Hamble crewed by 4 rowers + interchanging coxswain and passenger in close company pressurising us for some miles – a race was on. It was about 3 miles from the finish that we were overtaken by them and 4 of the bigger faster Cornish gigs and outrigger boats.
We crossed the finish line in 6th place from a fleet of 329 boats.
What a great result
We also finished 2nd in the over 40 veterans and 3rd in the 4 oar boat class.
All boats finishing ahead of us had 4 or more rowers. We are three rowers, rowing Randan style (two sweeps + one sculler) and rowed without change the full 21.6 mile course.
A fantastic day for us in this great rowing event.
We are looking forward to next year where it is hoped we can crew “Rosie” and have two boats rowing in this race flying the Tudor Sailing Club flag.
Our local RNLI station was chosen as our good cause and a just giving page (link below) has been set up to receive charitable donations. The funds will go direct to the Eastney station. We will be presenting the cheque to the station during the first week in October.
