Round Hayling Island Dinghy Cruise
This Sunday is the annual round Hayling Island dinghy cruise, anticlockwise around the Island, stopping on the beach at Hayling Island Sailing Club for lunch. It is an interesting trip, including two harbours and open sea, usually providing a variety of sailing conditions. To get past the bridge to Hayling Island, by Langstone Sailing Club, some boats will lower the mast (if they can), others choose to capsize and ‘walk’ the boat under, which can involve some deep paddling. The support rib will try to assist where required. I have been told that there will be a trolley or two available at Langstone Sailing Club which could be used if some boats want to go up the slipway and over the road instead.
Please bring plenty of clothing, better to err on the warm side than risk being cold, and lunch. Boats with limited storage can hand bagged items (spare clothes and food) to larger dinghies or one of the ribs, to be retrieved at lunch time. If you have a compass you may find this useful between the harbours, the course is essentially due east from south of the East Winner bank to Chichester Bar Beacon, but we are not anticipating fog and the destination should be visible.
As for timings, I suggest that we try to be rigged and dressed ready for a briefing around 1030 and we will then get going after that. It is not possible to give a finish time but I think it unlikely we would be back before 5pm and it could be quite a bit later, depending on the wind.

Curry Night – 20th May 6.30- 8.00pm
This Friday night is curry night, so why cook if you don’t have to? We will be serving chicken katsu curry with rice, naan and poppadoms. A vegetarian option is available.
You can pay on the day, but please prebook if possible so we can get an idea of numbers

Friendly Friday Rowing Race Night – 27th May
This is the evening when the rowers put their names in a hat and get to row with people of differing capabilities for a fun row around Broom and back.
It’s a great way to get to know each other. If you haven’t rowed before or are relatively new, that is no problem, everyone is welcome to come along and join in, or just to watch and have something to eat.
We will be serving beef goulash tonight, with mash potato and green beans. A vegetarian option is available.

TSC Open Day Try Sailing – 29th May
Are you are kayaker or rower who fancies a go at sailing? Or maybe a cruiser who has never rowed? Today is the day to come along to the club and try something different. Bring your family, bring your friends and get out on the water. Then relax and check out the new outdoor furniture, (which hopefully will have arrived) whilst enjoying the view, a drink and something from the BBQ. Cream teas and cakes also available.
We are going to have a small pebbled area in the garden, so if you fancy getting creative then why not have a go at stone painting? You could even try painting a picture of your boat.
We have a few events and talks planned for later in the year including our ‘Knotty Night’ but if there is anything you think would be a popular event, please let me know, I am always happy to hear your ideas.
Please keep an eye on the social calendar too, there could possibly be a cocktail making class coming soon, we just need to do a little bit more sampling! Cheers.

Raring to Row for 24hrs!
In December 2022 Kevin Watkins (one of Tudor Sailing Clubs Rowers) will be undertaking the challenge of a lifetime when he, together with 3 other crew members (Helen, Gemma & Adam) will start a 3000 mile rowing challenge from the Canary Islands to Antigua as part of the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge in support of Action Medical Research for Children.
In support of this epic challenge Tudor Sailing Club are organising a 24 hr sponsored rowing relay on the 1st & 2nd July 2022 around the beautiful Langstone Harbour. With all proceeds from the sponsorship, food and bar sales going to Action Medical Research for Children.
The aim of the rowing relay will be to keep Rosie one of Tudor Sailing Clubs Bursledon Gigs moving on the water for 24hrs (only stopping to switch crews). We want to get as many people involved as possible and are currently looking for volunteers to row or cox in the relay. The row will be split into 1 and 2hr slots, with crews being selected to ensure that there is at least one experienced rower in the boat at any one time.
If you can spare one or two hours of your time between 4pm on Friday 1st July and 4pm on Saturday 2nd July to help raise money for this very worthwhile cause then please let us know by completing and the online registration form. We can adjust the rowing schedule to suit your rowing ability and you will be given the opportunity to indicate your preferred rowing time.
Whilst Tudor Sailing Club will be keeping Rosie moving around Langstone Harbour, Kevin together with the rest of the Raring to Row Crew will be taking their Atlantic Boat around the Isle of Wight. Keeping the Atlantic Boat within the confines of Langstone Harbour for the duration of the row will not be possible for safety reasons as the boat is very susceptible to wind and tide.
We have set ourselves a fundraising target of £3,000 for our 24hr sponsored row (£1 for each mile rowed in the Atlantic Challenge) so please help us to raise money for this very worthwhile cause.
Thank you to John Elson for his hard work organising this event

Members Alerts ref. Club Problems
Hi All members,
The current system of informing the club management of club maintenance problems is by writing it in the “maintenance job book” housed in the club room pigeon holes. However, this system has now drifted into history as it is a lot easier for folk to use their phones, taking this social change into account it is suggested that in future should club members come across a problem/failing/something busted/needs replacing or whatever etc. please email the snag to the relevant committee such as maintenance .. or… bosuns.
This will ensure that the club infrastructure is maintained to the highest level possible, bearing in mind that it is all organised and implemented by “unpaid volunteers”.

Washing Down Boats, on the Slipway Please
This is polite request, that members wash down their boats/kayaks etc on the slipway and not in the compound. The club isn’t connected to mains drainage. Therefore anything that goes into our drains, ends up in a tank that we have to pay to be emptied.
Many thanks

Hamble River Raid 2022 – TSC champions
Last Saturday 5 rowing gigs entered the annual Hamble River Raid to represent TSC.
The course is around 6k and covers a busy channel of water with some twists and turns so boat handling becomes as important as straight line speed and stamina. There were around 76 vessels entered across the raid, making the water even busier than usual.
Our class was Bursledon and there were 18 gigs entered. I’m delighted to report that all 5 gigs representing TSC made the top ten.
Drum roll please …
Team Freedom came first overall in class.
Team Navigator came second overall in class.
Team Rosie was fastest women’s in class.
Fantastic achievements from all of our teams
As we look forward to this weekend and team Freedom defending their title as reigning Cockleshell champions it’s worth noting that TSC currently holds trophies for the ECA “Cockleshell”, the Bursledon “Boatyard Sheave” the Hamble “Raid blade”, the Bursledon River Raid fastest women, and the Bursledon River Race Rose Bowl for fastest women …..not bad as some of us are old crumblies
I’ll leave you with something from team Freedom which I think represents the teamwork and camaraderie amongst us.
“The competition on the Hamble River Raid was particularly strong this year, and it was great to see all the Tudor Boats do so well. Our win was very hard fought for, and we know that we will have to be at the top of our game if we want bring trophies back in future. We would particularly like to acknowledge the Navigator Crew who pushed us so hard and came a very close 2nd, and congratulations to the Rosie Crew who won the Ladies category. This shows the benefit of internal competition that constantly hones and raises the standards, a tried and tested formula successfully used in dinghy sailing for nearly a century.”
