Sword Sands Fun Day – 10th July

A huge thank you to all of you that came along on Sunday to make the event a huge success.

Thank you to Mark for helping rig, and get the dinghies on and off of the water. Hannah for helping with the kayaks, to John Elson for being a ferry service in the rowing gigs and to the patrol boat crews who ensured our safety

Thank you to all that helped with the food, and the galley gals that also ran the bar.

Lastly, I guess I ought to say congratulations to the men that beat us ladies at rounders! The ladies are looking forward to a rematch – you may not be so lucky next time!

Curry & Quiz Night – 15th July

It is curry night this Friday, so come along to relax, enjoy a drink and maybe win a prize at the quiz

We will be serving a chicken mango curry served with rice, poppadom and Naan from 6pm to 7pm.

Please pre book so we have an idea how many people to cater for

There is no need to eat to come along and join in with the quiz, but why not try something a little different.

https://webcollect.org.uk/tudorsc/event/curry-quiz-night

Turning the Tide – 22nd July

As highlighted by our rowing captain

https://webcollect.org.uk/tudorsc/event/turning-the-tide

Galley Training – 21st July 8.00pm

If you need to do duty hours and are happy to help in the galley then please book to come along to galley training.

This will entail going through health and hygiene procedures, allergies etc. It will only take about an hour, is very informal, and it means you are then able to help in the galley

Galley duties can be helping with the BBQ’s, serving food, cleaning and washing up. You don’t have to be able to cook, unless you want to.

We will be out on the water, so it will start at 8 pm.

https://webcollect.org.uk/tudorsc/event/galley-training-1

Friendly Friday Rowing Race Night – 29th July

This is the evening when the rowers put their names in a hat and get to row with people of differing capabilities for a fun row round Broom and back.

It’s a great way to get to know each other. If you haven’t rowed before or are relatively new, that is no problem, everyone is welcome to come along and join in, or just to watch and join us for something to eat.

We will be serving bacon, mac and cheese with garlic bread

https://webcollect.org.uk/tudorsc/event/friendly-friday-rowing-race-night-3

Lastly, we have had a table delivered which is to go outside, it is at the club. if anyone has a few minutes to spare could they please put it together, there is a drink in it for you ? Thank you.

Turning the Tide – Friday 22nd July

There’s still time to book for what’s shaping up to be a great evening. Join us for a beginner’s look at how the tides work in our harbour, and what affects them. Plus some basic training on all those floating buoys out there and what they mean for you. We’re delighted to be welcoming John Bearman to the club to speak. John works for the Hampshire Police Marine Unit and is also a RYA yachtmaster instructor.

There’ll be chilli and rice served between 6pm and 7pm and the talk will start at around 7pm. You don’t have to eat to come along, but pre booking either way would be appreciated so we know numbers to expect/cater for. The web collect link is below.

Although this evening is developed for newer members, our seasoned sailors, rowers, and paddlers are very welcome as the more advice and guidance in the room the better.

Ps: would be great to hear from you on the night about other seamanship evenings you’d find useful. We’ll definitely be running another knotty night at some point, but your ideas and feedback are appreciated.

Ebb & Flow:

For those attending Locks Regatta this coming weekend (see Diary Dates below) I have attached a copy of the sailing instructions.

On a slightly more personal note, I am doing Trek 26 to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society at the beginning of September. That’s a 26 mile walk from Salisbury up round Stonehenge and back. At the beginning of the year my dad, Brian Tansom, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s so, possibly in a rash moment, I decided to sign up. I’m not sure how many members remember my dad, but he joined a few years before I did in 1964 (he had a head start as I wasn’t born!). I remember helping him cut the grass at the old club growing up, and he became Secretary in 1980 or thereabouts. As another piece of club trivia, the Assistant Secretary role was created at the same time because he worked in a children’s home and with the shift patterns couldn’t make some meetings. As Assistant Secretary my mum covered this, and they continued in those posts for around 22 years.

Anyway, if anyone would like to sponsor me you can do so at: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/paul-tansom-trek26

As ever, feel free to drop me an email at this address, it is always nice to hear from members. Any ideas of things to include in the Tidal Diamonds would be most welcome.

Let’s be careful out there.

HSSC Weekly Update Friday 10th July 2022

From the Club Sec, Louisa Fifield Ladies and Gentlemen, HELLO! Lou here! First and fore-most thank you to everyone for the very warm welcome that has been extended to me in my first few weeks at Hornet. I am aware that I have very big shoes to fill (we checked – Arty is size 9 and I am only a size 7!) but with Arty’s help we are aiming for a smooth handover.

RNSA HSSC Summer Series Race 6 Results

From Ric Hanslip. With JJT on the way to Cork the slightly reduced fleet of 5 gathered for race 6 of the summer series on a pleasantly warm evening with a wind of around 10-15 knots from the west, although with a strong west going tide the wind felt somewhat stronger at times. SOOD Spirit of Kudu set a course of Greenings(P), Browndown(P), NE Ryde Middle(P), SE Ryde Middle(P), Greenings(S) finish.

THIS SUNDAY – ALL MEMBERS

Let’s all make the most of having our own island so close by and spend the afternoon on Sword Sands enjoying the sun, sand and sea.

Bring along your footballs, frisbees, your badminton racquets etc. The main thing is to bring yourselves and your friends and family along.

The patrol boats will be in attendance, so get those cruisers, dinghies, gigs and kayaks ready from midday onwards

Then back to the club for a BBQ and a few drinks to finish the day off.

BBQ will be pay on the day.

It looks like it will be a hot one, so please remember your sun tan lotion and water.

Give me a shout if you wish to go and need a lift, there will always be someone willing to help.

We will be serving a chicken mango curry served with rice, poppadom and Naan from 6pm to 7pm

Sword Sands Fun Day

This Sunday is a club cruise down to sword sands for a picnic and some games on the sands. This is a perfect event for newer members or any members that want to get out on the water in company with patrol boats being out on the water at the same time. We have 2 patrol boats heading down to the sands. So why not kayak, paddle board, dinghy sail or motor in your cruiser/tender down to sword sands. If you are wanting to use a club kayak, gig or dinghy then please book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Low Water Combined Cruise

Sunday 10th July

This will be an opportunity for everyone to get on the water together and have a good time in what looks to be sunny weather. We will be going to the sands so bring a some spare layers as it can get chilly in the breeze. The sailors will probably go for a longer cruise around the harbour prior to going to the sands but paddlers will go straight there. After returning from the sands we can open the bar and have a BBQ.

Please let the social team know rough numbers by booking on webcollect, you will pay on the day by card.

Round Up of Rowing Weekend

It’s been a busy weekend.

It was a real pleasure to welcome 16 members of Hamble River Rowing to our clubhouse on Friday evening.

Never feint hearted, not only did both clubs row with people they’d only just met, they also had to contend with deteriorating weather conditions with each race. Teamwork was crucial. It was a slog up Broom against the tide and wind from the get go, and by the final race let’s just say no one was in danger of smashing any previous time records. But everyone was still smiling at the end of the evening so I’d say a brilliant success. Thank you to all the TSC members that made all our guests so welcome. Picture attached of the winning team. ?

Saturday we were invited to Bosham Sailing Club for their inaugural rowing regatta. I wasn’t there so thank you to Steve Woodbridge for the following and congratulations to you and the Navigator crew for bringing home another 1st place title for TSC. ??

2 gigs from Tudor entered the race along with 6 other boats, 2 St Ayles Skiff’s, 2 Celtic Log Boat’s, a sliding seat Costal Quad and another Bursledon.

The event consisted of 3 races, a longer row to start south from the club, round School Rythe down the Bosham Channel turning just before the Chichester Channel and 2 shorter sprints north into Colner and Cutmill Creeks. The southerly force 3 to 4 combined with the rising tide made for challenging conditions.

Racing started at 09:00 and I’m pleased to report Tudor gigs were placed 1st and 2nd, Navigator closely beating Freedom into 2nd place. The only boat completing the course in a faster time was the Coastal Quad which lost out on handicap and was placed 4th behind the 3 Bursledons.

Celebrations gathered pace after the results and a BBQ, Tudor’s rowing reputation continues to grow around the area!

To help plan for this weekend please sign up if you are thinking of racing: https://machform.langstonesc.org.uk/view.php?id=263829

Cruiser Recovery Weekend

15/16 October: The Cruiser Recovery will take place on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 October when high water will be at 1610. All club members who are planning to bring their boats ashore are asked to make themselves available for both days of the weekend.
