Rowing News
There was no rowing at the club last Saturday, as Freedom and Rosie took part in the Great River Race: https://www.greatriverrace.co.uk/.
Normal service is now resumed, so if you fancy giving rowing a try, get in touch.
Both boats and crews travelled up to London on the Friday and camped on site at the Thames Young Mariners site at Ham, Richmond – some in great luxury and the poorer contingent in tents. Saturday saw an early rise to get the boats to the starting point down river in Docklands. Launching and pre-race manoeuvring is a pretty chaotic time, with some 314 boats involved! The larger ones were launched the previous evening and towed to the starting point, but that still left a lot of boats jockeying for position on the single slipway.
Both Tudor boats started in the same large group at 11:50 – the start itself was also pretty, erm, interesting, as we were starting with a current behind us running at 3 – 4 knots, so there was a lot of frantic backing down of boats trying not to be pushed over the line early.
The course is fantastic – seeing all the familiar sights from a different perspective was brilliant. There were a lot of onlookers on the bridges yelling encouragement and the weather was superb.
Freedom finished the race in an extremely creditable 10th place overall, and 4th in the over 40s veterans class – an absolutely amazing result and congratulations to them, especially when you consider that there were over 300 boats in the fleet. Rosie also finished a very respectable 22nd overall and 12th in the over 40s, so we were extremely happy with that.
A special thanks to the coxes Warren and Jay, the passengers who had to endure nearly three hours cramped in the bows of their respective boats, Chloe and Sophie, the drivers who helped get us there and the boats launched, Nick and Graham, and everyone else who was there to cheer us on from, very impressively, two bridges and the riverbank at the finish – quite a feat of logistics and much appreciated!
So the plan now is to have (at least!) three boats entered next year ……..
